A few weeks ago: The power of the human mind.

I tested After Hours to see if a joke could still be told, and well, it can't. Eight years ago, it was "ah you got me". Now, even though my opening post was utter nonsense, it turned into five pages of serious discussion. I didn't have the heart to tell them.

That’s nothing to do with moderation though, unless there’s a pre moderation for serious people.

Probably it’s just an older group of people and a more political time. (Brexit, gay marriage, abortion, the collapse of the Celtic tiger, the rise of immigration, Islamic terrorism in Europe, and the rise of identity politics are all pushing people to post about these subjects on the most popular forum)

Yeah, you're the exact type of poster who killed all the craic in After Hours.

A Priest, A Jew, a Muslim walk into the bar, and everyone is too afraid to say anything.

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue

Ah these posts pop up every few weeks. I was a regular back in the golden days - wasn't a massive poster in this specific form, but I was around here often enough. TBH I think AH is just reflecting the world we live in now. Everything is PC overkill at the mo and the current AH is simply a product of that. Like everything, it'll probably spin back around in time. Personally, I'd like to see a middle ground.

It's just easier to keep scrolling.

And don't try to start putting words in my mouth about "in my world". You know exactly what my point is here, and I know you're just setting up Holocaust / Rape type stuff for your reply to this to make me look like a c*nt.

    Lighten up:rolleyes:

I'm rarely on boards anymore. It just doesn't feel the same as it did around 2007 to 2009, the golden age of boards imo. Bgrh was flying and there was a general buzz around.
Now your afraid to say anything in case some snowflake gets offended

    Hmm.

The first post asked to “post if it works”. When I clicked on it for the first time (just a few minutes ago) I tried it in the privacy of this packed bus and understood the joke. Many others around me did not. I am getting glares.

The second one asked people if they had any other examples of mental illusions. Therefore they replied about that, and didn’t try the trick. If you don’t try it you wont get it.

    QED

Yes, first wording was nicely set up. Second wording didn't lend itself for a set up- but it's funny to the OP so that's all that counts- we should all really be laughing- shame on us.

Saying posters should scroll on instead of getting offended is not the same as saying that everyone should laugh at everything.

Your attempts here to make me look bad are not working so just stop.

Reporting a post is such a weak and dickish thing to do. Almost like hiding behind the teacher with your tongue out. Unless a post is directly targeting you, scroll past and move on with your life. Imagine leaving a comedy show and being offended at what the comic said?

After Hours has turned into the one stop shop for any piece of world news or social issue. There are plenty of sub-threads to correctly house those topics with all of the tight moderation and restrictions that people seem to now love.

DrGreenthumb's post was hiliarious. The fact that he actually recieved a card is pathetic. If you don't want those kind of responces, maybe don't raise the topic in After Hours?

You're the one who attacked me by accusing me of "killing the craic" in AH- so less of your wounded innocence act please.

Well I suppose people do find Mrs. Brown and Alison Spittle funny so I guess some would find it funny. "Hilarious" is a strech.

Just because you think your feelings are hurt doesnt give you the right to do anything about it some want to ban anything from being discussed if it hurts their pc sensitivity snowflake view of the world well i say get the hell over yourselves you aren't the high priest of what is and isnt acceptable to talk about in society.

....make a snarky remark or sassy comment that might offend some one without receiving a warning because some lil punk deems your comment offensive.

Well, it all depends who you direct the sassy snarky remark at tbh, as lack of consistency is a major issue and some users are held to a higher standard than others.

I'm banned from the '8th thread' where I had my legitimate views labelled as 'baiting' and my description of abortion was said to be too 'crass' to be condoned. Meanwhile, users on the other side of the debate could refer to those they disagreed with as 'evil' and 'sociopaths' and that's all seemingly just fine. One user was called a "despicable person" for his views (clear personal abuse) and not only was it not actioned, but a mod thanked it. Most laughably of all, seen the same mod tell a user that what they posted was a lie and that if they posted it again, they would be banned, but what the user posted was accurate. Never seen a thread so over moderated in 14 years of posting here. It's a divisive subject right now in our country, with maybe a 60/40 split in opinion, and yet that thread in no way reflects it.

The AH ethos is dead for sure. The infracting of the user who made that 'screw loose' joke evidence of it if ever it was needed. Seven or eight years ago, that post would have got post of the day.

Undoubtedly though, there are still and some decent AH mods about (and the odd admin too) who do try to listen to the userbase and that do genuinely care about facilitating fair discussion and debate here that is consistently moderated (where all bar the more extreme of opinions are welcome) but they surely must look around at some of their fellow mods and admin (who are clearly not on the same page or anything close to it) and think why are they bothering.

Exactly, nobody has to drill down into the threads if they don't want to.

As someone who was banned even before you; thank you

I think it is that the mods have their own Yes ideas and so there is no objectivity or impartiality which all mods should surely have and apply?

And the thread has gone on thus, see new NO posters come on and wonder how soon they too will be banned.

    Fine.
I agree with you anyway on how AH was better when it was more irreverent. I like the quick sharp wit, and sure it's easy to just scroll over the thick or poor taste jokes.

I don't think it's moderation though. I think moderators are just acting on reported posts, and whatever new demographics/generation are reporting more frequently, because they're (air quotes) offended, if not on their behalf, on somebody else's.

I'd imagine it's a hard concept to communicate to mods, what level of "morals" or lack thereof is acceptable, and when to respond to the persistently (air quotes) offended or just tell them to deal with it and move on to other threads/fora.

There's so many serious threads then, the jokey threads sort of fall flat in that context and then it's like a vicious circle.

I think this is spot on.

There's just far less decent, irreverent or interesting posters around now so the soapboxers and The Offended just make up more of the consensus now.

It was worse a year or two ago, moderation has improved a lot recently.

Has it? This is from a few weeks ago in the LoN thread:
    What are you on about?
I have no idea. What was the question again?
I can't remember. Are those my feet?
    They smell like yours.
Guys try and keep this on topic!

This is feckin' After Hours. If people want on-topic discussion, they shouldn't be posting on or reading this forum at all FFS.

That mod should be applauded for not allowing such a serious thread to descend into silliness.

    There you go.....

Anyone who think that all AH mods read every single post in AH an any cards\bans et cetera are of their own making should have their head examined.

I guess it is often a choice between having to give a card for something "meh" of which the consequences are gone in no time, or to have a lengthy pm conversation with whoever on why you didnt act on their report.

    You can not win.

But with 18 little 0 C outside.... the choice is easily made.

I suppose though, it's kind of like setting a new rule (even though that's really an old one) in any community.

If you establish a new rule that "Silly jokes and irreverent stuff are ok in AH", and feed that back as a mantra to posters who get offended at shocking jokes, and are report button afficionados, that will eventually sink in, and word will travel.

There's only so many times someone's gonna hit that button before they stomp off somewhere else, and I guess, that's the idea. At least, that's where Mods have the upper hand : no poster is forced to read or participate, therefore no sanctions or conditions needed there, all that is required is for the poster to go elsewhere.
