I tested After Hours to see if a joke could still be told, and well, it can't. Eight years ago, it was "ah you got me". Now, even though my opening post was utter nonsense, it turned into five pages of serious discussion. I didn't have the heart to tell them.
so, what you're saying is it was us all along, we did it to ourselves...

The Atheism and Agnostism forum is dead due to the ****ty moderation there.

Hardly anyone bothers going in there anymore...

who wants a kick in the face?

Facekicker is the most overrated poster on Boards ever. This poster never truly got the recognition he deserved.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

When I was but a gasúr we romanticised Gráinne Mhaol ruling the seas, Aodh Rua Ó Dónaill's escape from Dublin Castle in the snow of 1592 and the Marcshlua Uí Néill to Kinsale in 1601.

Now, alas, the sons and daughters of Éire/Banba/Róisín Dubh are romanticising... an internet discussion forum in the year 2000. I shed a tear for Ireland's future.

People don't believe in atheism any more. I'm not sure about agnosticism.

Way back when, I used to get a tonne of PMs from people asking if I posted a regular blog somewhere so they could follow it and donate towards it's further growth. I can only assume this was due to the quality of my posts.

These PMs have become quite rare nowadays. I'm not sure if this decrease is due to people simply getting older and having to devote their spare time to their growing families or if a global PM was issued by one of the mods to all users excluding myself, instructing them to cease these messages as the extra data flow was becoming harder to manage.

I have a feeling it was the latter which is disappointing and indicative of the current state of moderation on this site.

You have to laugh at what after hours has become, gone are the days when you can make a snarky remark or sassy comment that might offend some one without receiving a warning because some lil punk deems your comment offensive.

Well after hours / boards.ie I shall not be part of this **** fest anymore.

    Dr Greenthumb signing off.

There's clever and witty retorts and then there's this type of response to an attack on a 38 year old woman with a cordless drill- I for one am glad you're signing off- why don't you close your account while you're at it.

Yeah, you're the exact type of poster who killed all the craic in After Hours.

Yeah, you're the exact type of poster who killed all the craic in After Hours.

So you think making fun of an innocent person who was attacked with a cordless drill is "craic". Some people in AH are a lot less funny than they're led to believe.

My only point is I don't think every new thread topic posted in AH requires a mandatory pseudo joke post by some thanks whore - in this particular case I believe it was unnecessary and inappropriate and a lot of posters here in AH agree with that perspective as they've thanked subsequent posts criticising it.

ehmm... that' s a bit disingenuous.
Your post 8 years ago was a lot more explicit and with more imagery than the bland OP you made in the second thread. No wonder people didn't get it.

    8 years ago :
A simple test of the power of the human mind...
We've all heard of the things our minds can do with placebos etc. but this is prob the easiest test and it comes down to taste..

What you do is tilt your head back slightly, put your tongue out and pretend to a shake a salt shaker into your mouth..
If ya do this for a few seconds, you can actually get a salty taste in the back of your throat.

    Post if it works

    Recent post :
The power of the human mind.
I've always been fascinated with what goes on upstairs. How we dream, our subconscious etc.

Mostly though, the weird things like placebos or our minds tricking us interest me. A simple example would be like how we can taste salt if we pretend to shake a saltshaker into our mouths. I just don't understand how our brains can do that.

Any other good examples of these mental tricks?

That's fine if you want to call posters in AH dry ****es, but the example above wasn't needed really.

Man makes pun about a news story that has no relevance to his life. People get offended because jokes are inappropriate.

That is the death of After Hours. It used to be that people could just scroll past something that didn't sit well with them.. Now it's a bunch of people like yourself who want to dictate what good taste is.

Yeah sure you can't even make any good rape or holocaust jokes anymore either. AH is ruined.

Go back to to the threads I was creating in 2008-2009. It was all relaxed and easy. It was all like that.

We're not saying AH is dying because of jokes alone. It's the entire atmosphere that's changed.

Threads on abortion, Gay marriage, money grabbing lawsuits by lowlifes, Gender related discussions (toilets, changing rooms and femnazis), threads about dem evil mussies, "I Hate Kids in Restaurants/cats, dogs, trees, my neighbours" threads have been going round for years and ironically, while they're more civil on the surface (due to mod action), there has been a simmering atmosphere of resentment boiling away beneath the surface.
So my theory would be "familiarity breeds contempt", that over years and years of divisive issues the fun has gradually been sucked out of the place.
AH is like an old married couple that stays together, even though there's little left beside resentment. And (the collective) we could never seperate, because "I may be miserable, but I'd go to my grave before I see you happy". :D;)

Hardly the same joke. Your opening lines are totally different and sometimes that’s all some people read. The first one is clearly asking people to test something, the second is a joke sandwiched between some philosophising about the power of the mind and you posed a question at the end. You also got humerous responses in both

I'm not "offended" - I just don't think it's "funny" or "craic" or appropriate for that thread- and many agree with me.

So in your world, there is no line to be drawn in AH in terms of what people post and where- as long at it meets the standard of "craic" as defined by the person who posted it, that's fine- it should be left there and just ignored by posters who don't find it funny?

It's just easier to keep scrolling.

And don't try to start putting words in my mouth about "in my world". You know exactly what my point is here, and I know you're just setting up Holocaust / Rape type stuff for your reply to this to make me look like a c*nt.

    Fine.
I agree with you anyway on how AH was better when it was more irreverent. I like the quick sharp wit, and sure it's easy to just scroll over the thick or poor taste jokes.

I don't think it's moderation though. I think moderators are just acting on reported posts, and whatever new demographics/generation are reporting more frequently, because they're (air quotes) offended, if not on their behalf, on somebody else's.

I'd imagine it's a hard concept to communicate to mods, what level of "morals" or lack thereof is acceptable, and when to respond to the persistently (air quotes) offended or just tell them to deal with it and move on to other threads/fora.

There's so many serious threads then, the jokey threads sort of fall flat in that context and then it's like a vicious circle.
