Mexican coke and Irish coke are the same afaik. They’re made with sugar. I don’t think HFCS is used in the EU.

Agreed.. both use sugar afaik. A few hipster style places in Dublin were selling imported mexican coke a few years back which I found funny, since the standard stuff here is much the same.

I have seen places sell non Irish bottles coke, with Arabic looking writing on the label... Tastes like a melted Mr freeze

US coke uses HFCS because there's a massive surplus of corn in the US due to subsidised corn farming. It wouldn't make sense to us it in Europe, where we don't grow much maize or in Mexico where almost all of the maize is either used directly in food production because it's one of their staple foods, or used in the production of sh*ty domestic lager brands or used by AB-Inbev to make Budweiser.

Mexico also has a cheap sugarcane industry, whiles Europe has relatively cheap beer sugar.

In short, the only drinks with HFCS in Ireland are the various forms of coke those specialist sweet shops sell imported from the us and other imported American drinks like root beers.

At the end of the day it's all just sugar though.

The only Colas you can get here are made with high-fructose corn syrup. I think it is safe to say Cola made with cane sugar is about 50 times nicer.
    ...

I want high-fructose corn syrup to be banned, and all fizzy soft drinks should be mandated to use real cane sugar.
    WTF ?

corn syrup is a USA thing, meant to subsidise farmers , it has practically zero nutritional value ( they add vitamins to corn flakes because they are obliged to by law - corn is that poor a food )

coke is bottled here so I'd assumed they'd use the cheap locally available sucrose rather than importing something made from GMO corn

all moot anyway as the UK sugar tax will change lots of formulas

Orange Lucozade was my go-to fizzy drink before they took the fun out of it but I've always had a soft spot for Dr Pepper, which I assume is a cola. I have a couple of bottles a year, far from an expert tbh.

I knew a dude from Cuba once that said the cola there was the best he'd ever had. Glass bottles only, Cuban sugar cane, obviously no Coca-cola in sight.

Irish versions of Coca-Cola and Pepsi and most soft drinks are made with normal sugar the same as you'll find in a sugar bowl, not high fructose corn syrup. Are you sure you're not confusing this with the USA ? HFCS is quite unusual in Europe as a sweetener in soft drinks.

Might want to edit thread title to read "cola"
Oh, I'd say he meant it.

The OP explicitly capitalised the c in coke so is clearly only referring to the proper noun, Coke, that is the product of the Coca Cola Company. If he/she meant the drug it would be a common noun and thus not be capitalised, coke.
The word Coke is a trademark of the Coca-Cola Company. It is a proper noun and should always be capitalized. The word coke, meaning either cocaine or a by-product of coal or oil distillation, is not a proper noun and should not be capitalized except as normal English-language capitalization rules dictate. (Coke v. coke)

Capitalisation of proper and common nouns

Didn’t even notice it had gone. Tried it once. Didn’t like it. I guess it flopped.

I have seen peach and lime Diet Coke (2 seperate varieties), there’s a third which I can’t remember.

I just had some Mexican coke and can confirm it is way nicer than the normal stuff. I got a tray of 24 glass bottles for less than $20, no sugar tax here!

I notice though on the nutrition facts label it has the daily % value for everything except the sugar. I mean obviously it's probably something ridiculous like 150% of your daily recommended sugar but how did they get away with that, I thought by law they had to do it?

I work for one of the two major brands. You're corrrct, they're mostly the same so unless you're addicted to the stuff it really makes no difference which variation you drink.
