"The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) report produced by its independent scientific committee evaluates consumption of fluoride from the Irish diet by analysing 216 samples across 18 categories of the most commonly-consumed foods and beverages, including 10 varieties of tea, over the 2014 to 2016 period."

So that's nice. Now all we have to worry about is the chemicals in the water making the frogs gay and the chemtrails in the sky turning us all into lizard people.

If you google fluoride dangers you will find that not all experts believe this.

It tastes awful. I have absolutely no worries about the safety but we get our drinking water from the well because it tastes better. When out we would always order bottled water because we are so used of taste we can't stand the fluoride water.

Is it not of concern that Ireland is in the top5 of the most aftifically fluoridated water in the world? With over 75% of the population having it in their taps.

Only 11 countries across the globe have 50% or more of their population fluoridated. In total only around 5% of the world's populaiton. Many EU countries don't, or have ceased such practices in recent times.

There are many factors behind those statistics. It excludes countries like Argentina, Gabon, France, Libya, Mexico, Senegal, Sri Lanka, Tanzania and Zimbabwe where the water is naturally fluoridated. Indeed, many countries, including China, India and several in Africa have natural fluoridation exceeding recommended levels. Plus countries, e.g. Israel, stopped fluoridation because of cost - citing that only 1% of water was drunk so it was not cost effective. Other countries wish to fluoridate water but simply cannot afford to.

Fluoride at the levels we are talking about, less than one part per million, is tasteless. It is probably chlorine you are noticing

It might be. I find it stronger tasting than the water I get in my parents house which has chlorine but no fluoride. It might be that more is added here but in any case I am not overly fond of taste.

Flouride, in the levels it is in in our water, is perfectly safe.

Technically speaking the earth is pear shaped.

Many/most of the papers that say fluoride is bad are using concentrations above the EU limits as the control.

I object to it on a matter of principle. It was brought in when dentists didn't really exist for most Irish people in the 1950's, we have come a long way since then.

We are also the only country in the EU with a nationwide water fluoridation program. Every other country in Europe seem to have teeth that are doing just fine, so I don't see why we need to buck the trend on our own. Irish people don't exactly have a reputation for having great teeth as is.

It is morally wrong for the government to introduce anything into the water supply that doesn't increase its safety.

If the nanny state wanted to do something really useful, instead of aiming to be one of the '5 most artificially flourenated countries on the planet' it should:

i) Follow Scotland's lead and introduce minimum unit price (MUP), in the interest of public health, crime and safety.
ii) Reduce (the 25%) of Irelands adult popualtion whom are considered 'obese' (only 2nd to the UK in Western Europe, for fatties).
ii) Increase youth activity (4/5 of youth populaiton do not meet minimum physical activity guidelines). 25% approx are also obese.
iv) Test and treat vitamin D defficenies, particularly at mid-winter (considered a common deficency here - with very wide ranging sympotms).
v). Increase sugar taxes further, and ban all those very silly 'energy drinks'. What use is flouride in offsetting the daily 7tsp (10gms) of sugar in a typical 330ml can of lunch cola.
vi) Limit or further ban FOBT associated and 'virtual machines' in bookies. etc etc (drug legalising programs and so on)...
