Hey folks, got a crack on my windscreen since Saturday, it's getting longer by the hour! Grew about an inch in the sun today
Called insurance and they out me on to glass repair crew, who seemed to find the furthest possible slot for me - Wednesday week.
"Ah sure don't worry about it that's safe to drive!"
At the rate this thing is expanding I'm not so sure - do these things every fail spectacularly and craze all over - like at motorway speed?
It's about 8 inches from drivers side intruding right to left

Anything other than the smallest chip will need a new screen. It's probably ok to drive with for a few days. I had a good crack low down on a windscreen before and drove it for months before getting it done.

Depending where you are, there are probably a chain of sites where you can go...phone around.

    Thread need pics
But no, it is unlikely to shatter into a million pieces suddenly*

I drove a car once for almost 6 months with a foot long crack right in my line of view. I had no windscreen cover and so decided to wait until my renewal date and take out a policy with windscreen cover before getting it replaced.

Its safety glass, it wont shatter and its unlikely to craze all over the place if its a single crack at the moment.

The windscreen consist of two layers of glass between which there is a plastic layer which bonds the two panes of glass together. The crack is expanding as the glass is a bonded on the car body and when the body flexes it keeps minutely twisting the glass making the crack to slowly grow. The other reason for rapidly expanding crack would be rapid heating or cooling the glass like when hot water is poured on it to melt the ice.

There is absolutely no safety concerns over the crack as both the plastic layer and the inner layer are still intact. If it's not in your field of vision there is not even need to replace the glass. The windscreen can never shatter and break to million pieces due to the plastic layer which will keep all the fragments in check.
