I'd have cut the thing off too.
And a fine cut I'd make.
If you are quite clever and know the law you can counter sue the fckrs for damaging and interfering with your vehicle.

So they'll more than likely not take it further.

I see the 1916 spirit is still alive and well in Ireland.
Let's just say you would do that and the management company decided clamping isn't worth the hassle since everyone just cuts them off.
So now you're back from your trip to the clamping office, where you threw the clamp on the counter, gave them the 2 fingers like a boss and you came back to your spot and find an even bigger tough guy than yourself parked there.

beefburrito "erm, excuse me, this is my spot?"
Big guy "well, I'm only visiting, all visitor spots are full, I'll be parking here for a few days, suck it up".
    beefburrito "......."

Queue enraged phonecall to the management company "this is an outrage, I demand something be done about it!"
Which is answered with "well, we will get onto the offender and ask him to move his car. Sadly we can't do any more since clamping has been abandoned".
Queue call to the police, which is answered with a stifled yawn and "private matter".
And this is how rules work. They're not against you if implemented right, but they will be if people decide they are pointless and don't need to be followed.

Only county or city councils and Gardai can impose fines after the fact on cars that are clamped. If the DCC or one of the county councils or Garda have anything to do with the clamp and you remove it they will follow up and hit you with a fine. Co. Co. Clampers usually photograph clamps and the affected car to use as evidence in the case of a clamp being removed.

Unless the private company pursues a private case they will not be able to get their money. These private operators are usually present in supermarket car parks and the like and are the scum of the Earth, although not as bad as the ones in the UK who stalk drivers and pounce within minutes of a parking infringement. Also the signage requirements are not as strict as those in Ireland. Most notorious are rival shopping centres near each other where a car can be clamped if you walk cross the road to the rivals shopping centre, Clondalkin is notorious for this as is the Galway Shopping Centre.

I have seen these animals clamp cars belonging to vulnerable female workers late at night with complete disregard for the safety of these workers late at night stuck with no money or transport because of these predatory creatures. I had to rescue wife and daughter from dodgy parts of the city late at night so I do not have a high regard for these creatures.

I will not mention company names here but most people will know them and I hope all their operators end up in Dantes 7th circle of hell.

not true about the UK, clamping on private land has been outlawed

Why would you let anyone act in such an anti-social way by cutting a clamp off that was attached your car,... when it will all fall back on you??

I feel your pain. I also hate clampers.

However, as someone already said - they were probably hired by the Management company because of parking issues. You should have taken the issue up with them or your friend should have.

What you did (or rather the other person did on your behalf) is Criminal Damage.

Of course they have proof - you just told the world about right here. Never post about any type of issue like this. It's one of the first place that AGS or any insurance company or agent will look. I know this only too well from a Court Case on a different issue.
If you think the op is proof of anything I hope you don't make jury duty anytime soon. Could be anyone, anytime, anywhere.
I'd not lose sleep over it op. You didn't do anything.

Bans all cars and it won't be a problem

exactly, no-one can prove he acted on your behalf, so don't worry about it.

No it won't. OP neither interfered with the clamp, nor parked in apprpriately in the first place.

Nothing for OP to worry about here, move on.

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

OP's friend knew they were taking a risk but decided that because it was only for 30 mins they would chance it. The permit was being used on another car in another spot and no visitor permit was available because the tenant is not entitled to one.

Game of chance really, another day and you might have won, and in the great tradition of gambling, tried it again :)

Only an idiot follows the rules blindly without questioning them. Most people would be less enraged if it was a fine instead of a clamp, JUST LIKE IN THE REST OF THE WORLD.

I'm pretty sure in other countries they also clamp or the car gets towed away. What do you prefer?

We live in a democratic society.

Rules and laws are the result of elected representatives deciding what should and should not be allowed. In this case a management company who are the members and a board of elected representatives of the residents of this complex.

Questioning rules/laws is fine, and they should be questioned. It's democracy. If you don't agree, lobby or campaign for change. We've recently seen examples of this with referenda. But if you don't agree with something it's not a valid argument to not comply.

However my point still stands in that many people in this country don't have any social reponsibility. Your post reaffirms that. Small things like parking on double yellows or half up on a footpath to collect takeaways, throwing cigarettes out the window of a car, letting their dog sh1t all over the footpaths, burning smoky coal in towns.

All that kind of crap where it's screw everyone else I'm grand.

I find that all the people who say "I'm such a rebel, I stand up against the injustices of society and you people are just sheep for following the rules" are usually just wasters who flaunt the rules not because they are cool renegades, but because they don't want to pay something or want to sh*t on everyone else for their OWN advantage.
You know, selfish bastards who are after their own gain at the expense of everyone else with a massive chip on their shoulder and a God-given sense of entitlement.

    “Clampers are scum”
    “Laws are for idiots”
“I will do what I consider to be correct”

We live in a society with other people.
Rules were introduced to ensure a degree of consistency and consequently predictability of behaviour.

No your opinion on a given situation is not important. When in public, you follow the rules. If there is something wrong, change the rules for everyone, so we all know what is going on.

    It is not difficult.

Agreed. There's certainly an irony in how the majority on here see speeding as OK, but parking rules are non negotiable.

Clampers make mistakes just like anyone else, and anyone who gets caught out is self entitled?! We don't know if they were wrongly clamped or not, and there's no arguing with clampers. So the only options are pay up or break it off.

Never understood the accepted hatred of private clamping.

I was clamped once in my life, at 18 yrs of age in a private gated car park visiting a friend. I was only driving a month. I learned that the numbers on the ground at each space denote that the space is not mine to park in.
