It must be a truly sad existence if the prospect of pints of a Friday night is what gets you through the week.

A lot of people are functioning alcoholics, unbeknownst to themselves.

When you have kids the last thing you want to do is sit in and drink cans, you need to get out and whilst it means an expensive night for both of you I think it’s worth it, I usually enjoy every night I go out which isn’t often as we have a young baby!

I've 2 kids and another on the way. We do enjoy a night out every now and again but tbh, I'd rather go to the cinema than go to the pub when we have a child free night.

A stupid term invented by people to justify there excessive drinking. Someone is or isnt.

Even the most chronic down and out covered in shyte and piss all day drunking bottles of spirits is a functioning alcoholic, their body is functioning right?.

    Absurd phrase functioning alcoholic.

The other day my OH and I decided to have a night in. We had six cans each (twelve in total).

The six pack of Stella Artois cost €9 each. So €18 in total. We bought a pizza which cost us €2 and some potato croquets, €1.

€21 in total for six beers and snacks in comfort.

If We has gone to the pub, the pints would be €5 or so, the food could be €10-€20. Overall in the pub it would have cost €80 in the pub compared to €22 at home.

The pub can **** off. From now on I’ll drink at home in comfort and bring friends around.

If minimum pricing comes in, then I’ll ramp up my homebrewing.

    Ahh For Fork Sake....
You need to get out a little, your only a chap yet.:)

What? You think functional alcoholics coined the term to justify their drinking?? WTF??

That term... it does not mean what you think it means.

So, if I could find a nice pub with NO tv's, no music and just nice and quiet I think I would frequent.

    that sounds terrible

There is a place for all pubs. If I want to watch a match or golf etc I want a pub to have lots of good TVs, or if a crowd of us are going on the beer all day we would want multiple tvs showing all the sports as we would be following everything on the other hand if I was having a few quiet drinks with my oh then a nice quiet cosy pub often fits the bill, though even then I would nearly always prefer some music in the background at least to generate a bit of atmosphere.

There are plenty in between the above also but as a general rule I don't understand why people dislike TVs in pubs so much, maybe it's because I follow so much sport but I'm nearly always happy to have a tv in the background with some sport to keep an eye on even if the sound is down.

yeah 90% of the time I'm going to a local its for a match. it would be more going into the busier places in town if going on a night out. but it seemed like that post said they wanted a pub which would allow them to just sit in silence lol

Stop, I'd get awful restless without a night out and good session at the end of the week. Looking forward to getting out the door on a Friday and into the pub asap would get you through the week.

I was off the sauce for a long time due to training but since I've been injured I've gone back drinking a lot more than I used to. You're right, snaking off for a feed of pints after a week's work is great craic, no denying it - but it's not the only thing to be doing in your spare time either. I love the session, but I think when it gets to the point of spending your whole weekend in the pub it's a balls to be honest. The hangovers and after-effects as you get older are just dire (for me anyway, I'll get sick five times the day after a hard session) and the cost of it is ridiculous. The problem with me as well is that if I have a few pints I'll just end up going on the p*ss and when I do that I could easily put away 14 plus pints.

If it gets to the point you're saucing Friday through Sunday then there's no denying it's an unhealthy drinking pattern both physically and mentally and there really is more to life like, similarly it'll have a negative impact on stuff like relationships, friendships and other stuff.

My ideal scenario is limit it to a good session once a month or so, I couldn't be putting up with the weight gain and depression otherwise to be honest.

I rarely go out these days - live an hour away from work/town and drive, plus most of my mates are long since settled and living all over the place so getting people together is hard.

But while I do still occasionally go out, I really don't miss it - the expense, the noise, the pack-em-in-till-you're-standing-on-each-other attitude.. nah!

That said, I would rarely drink at home either.

Telling ya, the drinking at home stuff can be as dodgy. I know women in work who's sole intention when they get home is to "have a glass or two of wine to unwind" which usually means necking the bottle or most of it; these are also the ones who'll be moaning about putting on weight or going on a diet. The booze is absolute murder for bloat and fat gain.

I think there's a serious middle-class alcohol-dependence issue but we just don't see it as it takes the form of drinking wine in the privacy of the gaff and that's somehow seen as more respectable than falling out of a pub after a load of pints.

    I like both.

When I started drinking, I would have found the idea of drinking at home to be the province of the alcoholic but things are different these days.

The cost isn't really an issue, Its just much handier to do it these days, especially if you have kids. I like the convenience of not having to get home or brave the head the balls you get in town too. Much easier to limit your intake at home too and not be tempted to overdo it.

There's so much choice in off licence beer nowadays, you can interact with friends online or watch movies with your partner, have friends over for food or whatever.

That said, I still really like to go out but I would say the ratio these days for me is probably about 3:1 with a good night out about once every 5-6 weeks.

To be honest the prospect of only going out once a month would depress me, I like a good session every week if possible, it was twice week with one midweek and at least one weekend session for many years but it's usually just once a week now with the odd week with no night out and an odd one where it would just be a few quiet pints.

Of course there are the full weekends on the beer every now and then too or holidays are usually sessions from start to finish.

For me I've never really found drink having an impact on weight gain actually, I have drank away though times I've been losing weight no issue. Even recently I lost a stone in the last 2 months and that included a full week session while on holidays and a heavy night nearly every weekend id say with two some weeks.
