You were offered a better deal and an awesome colour and you said no?! :O

Thing is though I could have saved nearly €800 over the 3 years if that colour was available ( it wasn’t) but in 2021 that colour could be very dated and hard to shift .. This is my 5th Golf since 2010 having had pearlescent black ( X ) United grey ( X ) night blue ( X ) tungsten silver ( my favorite) and now white ..

I think the yellow looks nice in the press shots but I can't imagine driving a yellow car in person. I think white looks really well on the Golf.

I cycled past two Golf Rs in the city centre today. I swear since the start of this year I've seen so many more GTI, GTD and Rs driving around Dublin. It's not uncommon that I'll see two of those models in the same day.

I think with the right body styling and the right small changes you could make yourself, the turmeric can look stunning. It's far better than the sea of bland we get otherwise for the Golf on these shores.

However if you're never going to touch your car and leave it completely stock, as well as looking to shift it in the three year timeline, then I can see the temptation to stick safe with your colour.

On the mention of seeing far more GTI/GTD/R's about the place, this is one of the reasons I couldn't leave my own car as stock. I hate having "another Golf" (or any car for that matter) and it's becoming a bit more likely these days with the amount of them. :)

It would be mostly stop start city driving, with some trips down the M50. I would very rarely leave Dublin. 22 is what I measured on some short start/stop trips. I think it's doing about 24-25mpg overall since I got it.

I only do about 6000km a year so fuel economy isn't a huge concern of mine, I was more wondering if there might be something wrong with it.

I took it on its first proper trip outside the city this weekend and it was doing 36-37mpg. So the car appears to be fine, just very thirsty for the kind of driving I do most.

Picking up my new GTI tomorrow - buzzing!

Just wondering as I've never had a brand new car before - what sort of precautions should be taken to "break it in"? I've read that you should really take it easy on the throttle for the first 500 miles or so (will be tough to restrain myself on this front!) and check oil regularly initially - anything else to consider? or anything that GTIs particularly need or works well?

    Thanks a million in advance!

Once the engine is up to temp drive it as hard as you like. The instrument cluster will tell you this. Don't go on coolant gauge.

    Enjoy

This is what I did for about 1000km.

When oil is fully up to temp I would give it full throttle up to roughly 5k rpm, then engine break as much from then.
No laboring in high gears at low rpm's.
No constant rpm's, change down a gear to vary rpm.

After that it's open season, whether I did any good I don't know but the car doesn't use any oil and it runs perfectly.

    +1.
Don’t overthink it. Use some degree of mechanical sympathy for the first 10 minutes after a cold start and then drive it on and enjoy it.

Have my car booked in for a service and got a text from the dealer saying that because I'm a loyal customer they're giving me VW Connect for free, also saw this on the VW website recently as complimentary with classic services, problem is I already have it on my car, I'm one if those who paid a good bit to get it when selecting my car to my annoyance. Is there anything else I could ask them to throw in instead? Pretty sure its unlikely but worth a shot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

I think you're thinking of app connect, this is still an expensive option when it's not on offer. They are (confusingly) giving VW connect dongles free with services now, they plug into the OBD port and send some semi useless data to an app on your phone. Fuel level, odometer reading etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,174 ✭✭✭✭kmart6

Oh jesus that sounds pointless, presumed it was App Connect, my bad!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,832 ✭✭✭Neilw

I got it with a service and used it once, it isn't great.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,547 ✭✭✭JoeA3

They're giving it to everyone. My father (he has a new Tiguan) got a text about it last week - as a "valued" customer, we are offering this to you blah blah.

It's the sort of thing that's actually built into a lot of new cars now though (without the need to plug a dongle into the obd port), so I wouldn't go into tin-foil hat mode about it or anything. If you like having "useful" stats on your phone like current MPG, then go for it, otherwise it's hardly worth the bother. The BMW's have something similar built in. The BMW have their own internal SIM though, so in that way its a lot more capable - i.e. not relying on using your phone's hotspot to do anything useful.

Are you up to 90k in an R? Service interval is 15k isn't it?

    Fair play:D

i've my ST since Jan 2016 and have 68k on it now.

About 83k - went early for the last two- front brake pads were 90% worn this time so I didnt want to hang about. Mines a 151.

I seem to always be learning something new about the Golf, obviously flicking the wiper down once will make it wipe once but if you hold it down then it wipes really quickly until you let go.

Don't know what scenario you'd need it but cool that it's there. Found out randomly while putting the wipers into service mode.

On that note though the lower part of the driver side wiper 'wobbles' as it passes, it seems like they aren't being pressed onto the windscreen enough, if that makes sense. Cleaned the blades earlier as they seemed to smudge a bit so not sure if they're just dirty or I need new ones...

Was just put in in the pocket of my passenger door, never mentioned by the service agent or anything, not sure what the point of that is.

Popped into Audi to price out an S3 Sportback. Specced one with similar kit that an R would come with and it hit 62k. And it was still missing some options like reversing camera, folding mirrors etc. The bigger thing that got me though, the trade in they offered on the GTI. Bearing in mind it's exactly 2 years old this week, and has 30k on the clock I was somewhat taken aback by an offer of 23.5k!

I look forward to being insulted in a year or so...

The reality is that if your trading then your going to be valued close to what you can import one from the UK for. It's not just VW either, the entire second hand market is gone to **** here due to weak sterling and cheaper imports.

So only 40k to change then lol.

Audi standard spec is a bit of a joke. By the time you add those missing bits and I'm sure there's other bits missing (e.g. I'm nearly sure the S3 comes on 18's, not 19's and I don't think adaptive cruise is standard), then you're up into 65-6k at least.

Audi and BMW don't want other marques on a trade in. They can't retail them on their forecourt. So unless the Audi dealer has a sister VW dealers (e.g. Connollys in the West have Audi Galway and a VW dealers in Sligo), then they have to offload your car to the trade... so you get bottom dollar.

    I guess a VW dealer would retail a 161 GTI for 28-29k.

Well VW dealers are charging nearly €24,000 for 2014 GTIs...

That's it in a nutshell really.
Recently traded a 2016 car and all dealers were within 1k of each other on values. you are only going to get a more favourable value by them applying bigger discount to what they are selling and if they do that then it's for something that they want to shift and may not be easily sellable by you again.

What are you looking for in a car Osi?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 126 ✭✭Max Q

Audi pricing is ridiculous and their standard spec is miserable, even compared to their sister brands in the same group. A VW Golf R comes with far superior standard spec than an S3, same engine (and almost everything else is the same bar the interior switchgear and the outside panels). So you get essentially the same car for about €15 less. I know the same can be said for Skoda, Seat etc..but the difference is not as stark.

Leon Cupra is very comfy and has plenty of toys as standard. The ST version has even more space if you need that kind of thing.

The VRS 245 or the Leon Cupra would be the obvious candidates. There’s an AWD 300bhp Cupra available now too, a mate has one on order. Saucy enough money too but a good 15k+ less than an S3!
