I heard rumours of people paying 400 an acre to rent land. Maybe the people that made no money in beef for years are going to be happy doing the same in dairy.

It's more than likely tillage men paying that! I wouldn't pay it anyway. 160 acre ex dairy farm local to me made 300€ plus the entitlements, will be sown to spring barley.

Piss easy to do that the height of a sunny summer/autumn day when the misery of days like today forgotten ha. For me even paying "only" 200e/ac for 40ac right beside me I'm actually no better off yet than the days that I only had 110ac milking block, no rented land, and instead bought in maize and 1st cut.

Anyways sorry, stop ranting Tim lol, anyone got a rough breakdown on the cost of converting a straw bedded shed into cubicles?

Milking ten rows of cows and them in full time is no fun.

Reading the farmers journal there, there's a major increase in empty bvd samples this year, in some batches of 30 there was 10 empty  it's across all suppliers. Main problem here this year is results are taking longer, posted on a monday and not getting results until Saturday. Also results are up on line but text doesnt come for a day or 2 after this , anyone else finding this?

I've had 2 out of twelve report back as being empty, never happened before. This is some joke.

8 cubic metres of concrete will do roughly 20 beds, so 30 euro concrete per cubicle a 100 for mat and cubicle itself and say 40 euro for labour and materials/filling ...
So 40 cubicles will be circa 6500 euro, bit less if you do the labour yourself

I had one last year even though I make sure that every sample stays in the needle. I wonder is it one of the people sampling with fiddly hands?

550 acre for spuds for two years. Review after that for wheat. This fella has kids going through college. Sold the few bullocks last backend and set the lot.

Looks like next week is going to be the best we've had in a while, temps looki like they're staying around 12/13 with some small amounts of rain. Hopefully it will improve things

Have one here, got it 3 years ago. It's in the calving shed all the time. 50/50 chance I saved a calf with it 3 years ago. %100 chance I saved a calf with it this year. Best bull calf I have too. He was born naturally and no pull.

I was in yard anyway and waited in the shed watching it calve. Noticed no life out of him when he was out. Pulled him into next pen. After hanging him over a gate, splashed water on him all the usual, what was probably only 2/3 mins felt like forever I was gased ha. Ran over and got the resuscitater and sucked a pint of fluid out of his lungs he jumped into life. You might not use it often, but the day you pull it out and it does that you'll be glad you have it.
I fell asleep at the table after dinner today and didn't wake till 4.30. Went down to check the sheds and a heifer calving with a while, head swollen and stuck at the shoulders. Put on the ropes and pulled the bull calf easily enough but no sign of a breath from him. A few minutes of CPR and breathing into his mouth brought him back, thankfully. Heifer up and milked too so a good evening here.

Just put in the order for the resuscitator, 157 euro on agridirect.

Had a heifer calved today, was driving out of the yard to football this evening and the heifer was drinking a cow in the calving shed

That's the one I have. I use the suck side first to clear up the airway then slowly fill the lungs with air and repeat if necessary. Best of luck with it. Hopefully you don't have to use it 😂

We used to use an oxygen cylinder.....shove the tube down his nose and inflate the calf a few times.......it'd usually get him going......would nearly need a whiff of it myself a few times too at times

Do you ever make up electrolytes yourself, We used to do it here when we were rearing calves.......or is there more than electrolytes in effydral

Get a box of boxes here at the start of the season. Fortunately only used a few this year. Coops should have them too worth a try

Normally just get them off vet. Magenta dont sell them. Our vets closed down and we are using another practice half an hour away. I have a call out today so asked him to go by their office on the way up and get me a box.

Had vet up last night for a swollen up calf, asked him where lads having much bother with calves his reply was everything's giving bother this year, and reckoned with increased numbers combined with poor facilities the whole lot has blew-up this year given the weather woes....
Will be interesting to see what tally calf/cow deaths come in for 2018 it could be pretty horrific
