Overview Menu

Just to be sure I'm using the correct term... The overview menu is the 3rd button beside the home button and back button on the bottom of Android phones.

I'm setting up an android phone for my mother and am trying to make it as mistake proof as possible.

The last thing I'm working on is the overview menu where you can close apps or switch between apps.

The issue is that if you hold your finder on an app in the overview menu for less than a second it opens the settings for that app and I can see this causing confusion for a senior trying to get used to using an android phone.

I would like to stop this happening or at least extend the long press to a few seconds before the settings menu appears.

If this is possible can you let me know how to do it? Thanks.

I'm using android a long time and I always called it the recents button but it seems you might be right with overview! I use it as an app switcher. Top tip: double tap on it to quickly switch back to the last app you had open. I can't seem to replicate what you saying about long pressing it though. On my htc u11 that gives me split screen mode. There may be something in the settings under buttons or gestures or navigation?

What phone and what version of android are ye using?

That comes with MIUI by default.

You could simplify things for them by installing a simplified custom launcher.

I got the apex launcher as I could rename icons and lock the desktop/home screen. She is used to using an Android tablet and will figure things out so I wouldn't want to go with too basic a launcher at the moment.

The only issue remaining is the overview menu and the duration of the long press on the tabs in this menu.

Thanks for taking the time to help.

It's a ROM feature, not an Android one (i.e. it's part of MIUI, not default Android behaviour). Based on this article, you should be able to turn it off by going to Settings => Additional Settings => Buttons and Gesture Shortcuts, then set "Show Menu" to "None"

May depend on your exact MIUI version though
