    I think they are now closed. The first batch of closures were early March and Newtownabbey was one of them.

    In any case there were several people saying that even at closing down prices, Smyths & Argos were still cheaper - shows how badly run Toys "were" Us was.


    I used to be that trade - Toys 'were' Us chuckled when they heard a little Irish company called Smyths were entering the UK market.

    Smyths are now #1 in the UK - just 10 years after entering the market - and still based in Galway.

    Closing dates for Belfast and Lisburn are as follows

    Lisburn Sprucefield Mon-23-Apr
    Belfast Castle Court Tue-24-Apr



    At 6pm on Tuesday 24th April, Toys r Us will be known as Toys "Were" Us and all UK stores will be gone. A classic example of a retailer not moving with the times and pummelled by the combination of an Irish upstart (Smyths who are now the Largest toy retailer in UK/Irl) and the UK "The Entertainer" group who have fantastic shops.

    In the news today that Smyths have negotiated to take over the T'R'U operations in Germany, Austria & Switzerland.

    It was known in the trade for the past few weeks that they were the likely buyer. UK shops were never an option as it would have meant competition issues and a lot of overlapping.

    I believe there are very wide smirks on the smyths boys this weekend as Toy r Us laughed when it was suggested 10 years ago that smyths would become a dominant player in the UK.
