Wallpaper removal and skim

Hi all. Embarking on my first diy project which has unfortunately grown arms and legs over the weekend. We bought a 1980s semi d with wallpaper on the walls. We started stripping it back and found unfortunately that they didn't plaster the walls before they put the paper into the plasterboard. We stripped it all back but when we get down to the board we are finding it hard to take the last backing of the paper off without damaging the board. My question is how "off" does the paper have to be to allow a plasterer to skim the lot? Is there anything else we can do to improve matters. Bit panicked about it.

I would imagine if it was all bonded with a PVA that the plasterer would be happy to proceed.

Done this on my first house years ago and it's torturous. Just get as much of as you can and then get the wall polybonded before skimming. Best advice for the outside walls is just get a 3/8" board and screw then onto the existing and then skim over.
This has the added benefit of helping a small bit with insulation as well.
My saving grace was that my best friend is a Plasterer.

Cheers lads. I think it's ok now and the auld lad reckons the same so fingers crossed. Plasterer is here in the morning to give the verdict.
