Are men's razors a gimmick?

A pack of 11 Mach III razors was priced at €28.99, that's €2.63 a razor. I always find that these triple blade crap usually gets clogged up easily and the blades warp and distort (I have very coarse facial hair).

A colleague of mine was trying to convince me to move over to safety razors and he bought me a cheap safety razor handle (a tenner or something) and a pack of safety blades. Well, I haven't looked back!

Replacement blades are 10 for €2.99, only 30 cent per blade. Even if I only shave once per blade, it still works out cheaper than getting the Mach II and Gilette ones.

I even find they give a crisper and smoother shave with lesser effort.

The Mach 3s are still way better than them 5 Blade Fusions.

Thankfully, I usally have a beard, so other than shaving the stubbly edges for special ocasions, its not an issue.

Aye, mens razors are a bit of a gimmick. A cheaper brand will do the same job. There are some of the cheaper brands that are awful (like Bic mentioned above), but a good few of the others give a decent shave. Gillette just like to make out shaving is some complex operation to sell their wares.

Cien branded blades sold in Lidl are grand, just a pity they've gone and ended the triple blade system and introduced a more wasteful two blade product (you have to buy the handle every time you buy the four pack of refills!).

Those Cien from Lidl are about the best value for money imo. You get 4 packs of 6 (24 blades) and a new handle for about 6quid.

    What HP said.

Try buying Russian blades on eBay. I have a coarse beard and buy 100 blades at a time for about a tenner. Rapira and voskhod blades are great. At that price I use them 3 times then toss em. 3c a shave - can’t argue with that.

And I have one of these adjustable Chinese razors that are a knock off of a much more expensive one: https://m.aliexpress.com/item/32808212289.html?pid=808_0000_0109&spm=a2g0n.search-amp.list.32808212289

    :D

I got caught without my usual blade while travlling and bought some bic in a spar. FS! How does anybody use them? A rusty pull top from a tin of sardines would be better.

Is anyone brave enough to use a straight razor?

Wilkinson Sword I find last for months.

Gillette are a pure marketing scam.

Pennies per shave. If you have to worry about the pennies, just let the beard grow.

If I ever find myself stuck, I find the Gillette Blue II disposables are daycent.

Some stores used to sell a retail product back in the days ('70s), something to do with placing a razor inside a pyramid (cardboard kit) to keep it sharp.

Probably a mix of folklore, sci-fi and recreational substances from those days.

However you have to ask why the Egyptians put some much effort into building them.

Use a wilkinson sword hydro 5 to shave the head, as the mac3 would tear lumps at times!

To shape the beard on my face, I have a shavette, and got 100 double edged blades for $16.50 that I snap into two. So if I change the blade once a week, I have maybe 4 years worth of blades!

Will probably use the shavette to shave the head eventually.

I use a straight razor and a double edge safety one.
Even shave my ball sack with them.

You can buy 200 blades for 10/15 quid online and the brush and cream and actually razor will set you back an initial 50 quid and the shaving cream is only a couple of euro. Got mine on shaving.ie.

You won't get a better shave using them and no stubble rash if you do it properly.
Stubble rash is caused from having multiple blades rubbing off the dry skin.

If 1 blade isn't enough to cut a hair you probably shouldn't use it. All this 3 and 5 blades are the biggest load of bollox. No idea how that idea got so successful

You should change the blade every second shave. It goes slightly dull and then pulls the hair.

Those Lidl ones are grand altogether. Not at all to be confused with those horrible Bic things.

Think of all the useless shïte that gets flogged to women by the beauty industry, day in, day out. Creams, potions, gels, cleansers, toners, firmers, fillers, lifters, conditioners, moisturisers, serums, rejuvenating masks, bla, bla, bla....

Whereas when it comes to men, this is about the only product range where advertisers can rev it up to an equivalent degree. There are enough men prepared to shell out mad money for razors and canned foam because they feel they're treating themselves. The best a man can get, like.

Indeed, but the USP of the 'pyramid' product was some sort of 'infinite sharpness' due to some quantum space-time hyperbole.

Don't have aul egyptian shaped pyramid handy here, so can't test nor validate the claim.

we're at 5 blades now, i wonder when if it goes beyond 10! has anyone tried shaving with both a 1 blade and 5 blade and used a stopwatch?

im surprised they havent fit leds to them yet

in my lifetime washing powder gets clothes whiter every 5-10 years, somehow the old white wasnt really white

and we get an extra blade on our razors every 5-10 years, with the promise of an attractive woman entering the bathroom for a warm embrace, right before we leave for work as a jet fighter pilot

Can't be doing with cheap razors, cut your face to ribbons.

The pyramidic razor infinite sharpness storage device (screen grab from the 1st search result on utube)

Seems like a lot of bother all the same to have the lady face.

Gillette etc are overpriced and terrible, not to mention the goo in a can they sell

DE razors are far superior, the blade is changed after every shave.

Found the actual product, it did exist and even had a PatPend.

    qd9k6kB.png

Way back in 1949, a Czechoslovakian named Karel Drbal tried to patent the 'Pharaoh's Shaving Device', which he claimed could sharpen razor blades if they were place in the pyramid in alignment with the earth's magnetic field. This is bad news for Bic if it gets out.
