Fibre Rollout - Commercially Viable Areas

    I live just outside Cork City, and my area has approximately 100 houses that are deemed to be not commercially viable according to fibrerollout.ie

    Does anyone know if it's possible to petition for change or what Eir's criteria is for determining whether the area is viable? I'm currently sitting on <1mbps and the NBP doesn't look to be progressing very well, so I'm willing to put in effort.

    I offered them that I pay for the connection parts and labour and they refused, so try if there is any wireless ISP around

    Moving house is the only option. A petition isn't going to make rollouting out broadband to one-off housing in the backarse olf nowhere any less expensive. Your homes require more telephone polls which are located on private land that Eir has to lease from farmers.

    On a side note, I contacted Eir and they told me to contact KN so I've emailed them. I just want a reason.

    A petition where the people pledge to buy the product would possibly work.

    100 people probably isn't enough because they guestimate only 10 percent of the 100 would actually buy the product.

    If youre on 1mbps you are a long way from an exchange. Your only hope is nbp, the private operators are not interested in providing you a service. Petitioning private companies isnt going to change anything

    People may be being hard on the OP here. I'm not sure if this is the case here but there is the elephant in the room of lots of premises around the country that were originally supposed to be covered under the existing VDSL rollout. They were not included in the original NBP map and it is only recently that Minister Naughten has sent 30000 such Eircodes to eir asking for them to be included but there is no compulsion on eir to cover them under the commitment contract.

    Zoom into the Cork city area on the NBP map and see how many amber dots there are in the dark blue areas. This is repeated nationwide.

    Not really arrogant, just very to the point .
    Go here, scroll down to 'Strategic Planning' and hit play. Either the data they had was out of whack for your area OR the demographics/geography/costs make no sense to connect up the area of 100 houses initially.
    Sounds like your area is more densely populated and this was the Rural rollout, SIRO is focusing on urban and its been suggested so now is Eir so in time there is a chance your area could be serviced.

    Not willing to wait and your willing/able to do it yourself? Google 'b4rn'. Could be a good little ISP business.

    Side but related note, does the business package agreement with Eir (or any of the other FTTH/P companies) say anything about not being aloud to resell the service just like I believe it is in the residential contract?

    Bah! have to go to a promotional video to find the answer!
    It's simple - less profitable areas are not getting a rollout and the more profitable areas are. Algorithms don't write themselves you know - :rolleyes:

    I emailed KN long time ago and they told me to contact eir as they don't deal directly with customers

    I'm in a similar position to the op, where the current eir 300k scheme finishes one house away from us. We're approx 0.8km from that house, we'd be the next on the line, and there's 5 houses further to the end of the line.

    I can't see how it will be anyone except Openeir who will eventually provide fibre to us, so I'd love to be able to make a case for doing it now instead of 2 years time.

    Depends on the provider. They effectively can't prevent you from reselling it.

    OpenEIR has locked down their rollout. They won't even go 150m past what they've specified. Tried to get them to go the extra stretch on several occasions. They're not interested.

    The issue is, that every cluster only has a max span of 20km from the OLT (of total fiber run) and 32 ports. So they've obviously calculated, what they can cover within that. What comes further on, needs a new cluster, OLT port, etc.
