Liam Óg O'Flynn (1945-2018), Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam

The great Liam Óg has just passed away at the young age of 72. What a life, what a contribution from being a protégé of the hugely influential Leo Rowsome (1903-1970) to being a founding member of Planxty to being the most acclaimed piper of his generation. A Kildare man like his old Planxty friend Christy Moore, he came out of an extraordinary time in the 1970s that also brought us Dónal Lunny, Andy Irvine, Paul Brady, the Bothy Band and so much more.

My first cd of his to buy was The Given Note in 1995, which not only opened up trad music to me but the poetry of Eoghan Rua Ó Súilleabháin (1748-1782) and a whole world of Galician trad music for the first time.
