I get the feeling our secondary is going to be sh1t in 2018. I just hope if that is the case we stack up in the front 7 and actually pressure QBs. Our offense carried us all season long last season we need a defense at this point that works.

Would have loved to see Sherman in a Pats uniform. The guy is a mouth sure, he has attitude, sure. He is a damn good competitor and a winner though, he walks the walk to go with his talk.

As has been said before, he is often butting heads demanding more from teammates and gets up in the face of opposition players but was the first guy there to shake TB12's hand that day too.

The total opposite with Talib, delighted he isn't coming back. No time for him whatsoever.

Looks like Danny is going to sign with the Dolphins.
Sad to see him go, such a clutch player.

Disappointed we didn't keep him. But Jordy Nelson released.......................

I'm pretty crushed to read about Danny. One of my favorite players, so goddamn clutch, time and again.

Butler and Lewis both off to the Titans, no mention of us signing anyone

Its funny all these articles saying we are concentrating on fixing our defense but yet we let quality players slip away into the night on the FA.

Half assesd approach for Talib and no approach for Sherman or any other DB. No attempt to sign any other players other than Shelton.

    Disappointing thus far.

Gutted about Danny, who would have thought that a few short seasons ago!

That's a big roster loss right there, no way gronk is retiring with the passing options gone already. Lewis is another big loss and needs replacing but hasn't come as much of a shock.

A big move for Sherman would have been nice, not talib though. Still a long way to go so I'll hold my thoughts for now and see how the roster shapes up further down the line

Sorry to see Danny go, but we were not going to match the money the Fins were offering. At 32yrs old, and over $8m guaranteed, he's made the right decision for him.

Happy to see Butler getting paid as well. He now links up with Logan Ryan at the Titians.

In terms of the defense, they simply have to address the D line and get some pressure on a consistent basis. The CBs got burnt last year, esp in the SB, and a huge reason is the lack of pressure.

Yeah, corners got a lot of stick but its impossible to look great when a QB is getting all the time in the world to throw the football.

If we can improve our pass rush then the secondary should be good.

No surprise to see all 3 leave. Disappointing nonetheless on all of them, I think all 3 are key losses and all were major contributors to the team.

Amendola is getting paid for the years of taking cuts to stay on a winning team. It is his last chance at a decent contract and it was clear the Patriots were never going to pay him his worth.

Butler was handled shamefully. Of all the dealings with players over the years and prick acting (Milloy, Welker, Collins etc) this was by far the worst. From last off season through to the Superbowl, the Patriots gave nothing in return for Butlers play and his loyalty. I'm not sure will he comment on the Superbowl now that he is gone, to be honest I hope he doesnt and keeps the moral high ground, but I'm glad personally for him and seriously annoyed at how the Patriots treated him as a whole. I've already seen plenty of narratives of how he was crap and he is no loss, but we are losing a corner who played the most snaps of any defender on the roster, a whopping 97.8% of all defensive snaps all season, and yet didnt get one in the Superbowl. That still rankles with me quite badly, so I'm glad Butler can give an F you to the Patriots and get paid. Sincerely wish him the best, through all the crap he endured, he has not put a foot wrong nor whined or bitched.

Lewis too, as discussed previously, is a loss. I think he could have been kept at those figures too. White is the only one who has the x factor spark like Lewis, but he doesnt have the run capabilities. And Gillislee has far from proven himself and Burkhead is not near the level of Lewis.

I'm concerned over the lack of additions right now too. I know we have not had the draft yet and there is a long way to go, but there are quality players out there available and looks like we are sitting on our hands.

This has been a **** start to the season. Losing 3 guys who have always played their asses off for us and have come through in key moments sucks.

I agree re: Butler. One of the worst stains on Bill's blotter imo.

I'd be lying if I didnt admit to being a little concerned.
But it's NE, with Brady and Belichick. Next man up.

Amendola must of got sick of working in January. Jordy Nelson is supposed to be interested in joining could be a solid pickup

So you believe our secondary is good enough right now? I get what you are saying about the pass rush but outside of Gilmore and McCourty our secondary is horrible. Rowe for me is average at best and Bademosi is nothing more than a special teamer.

    Lets look at our secondary:

    CBs:

Gilmore : Slow start but showed at the end of the season why we signed him

Rowe : Average at best with the odd hot flash of goodness but not consistent enough and gets burned a lot

Bademosi : Solid ST but just never going to make it as a starting CB. I dont even rate him enough to be including in Nickel and Dime sets.

    FS :

    McCourty : Solid guy

King : Just ok nothing to write home about

    SS :

Not going to bother rating these because all of our Strong safeties are what you would expect from a SS. Combo Pass Defenders/Run Stoppers. Chung being the best of the bunch between Richards/Harmon

We need better pieces in our secondary with or without a pass rush

Apparently he knew the Packers were releasing and him or his agent reached out to New England. We could get him cheap if he really wants to play in NE and the two parties sit down.

I would love this to happen. I feel he still has a lot to offer

    Solder off to the Giants

$15 million a year. Overpaid for me but can’t blame him

3 good players, of which 2 (and mccourty at a push) are solid starters for pretty much anyone in the league (Chung and Gilmore).

Outside that, there are issues in the rest of the secondary especially at CB.

There's also no pass rush. You can see why Tom had to throw 500 yards in the superbowl and pretty much carried the offense all of last year. The defense can't rush the passer and cant get off the field early enough

We should have paid him. What experienced LT are we going to find out there for less than 15m a year? Are we that confident that the draft will come up big for us.

    So as things stand:

    - Front 7 that need a lot of help
    - Secondary that needs help
    - No experienced LT on the team and an Oline that has it struggles

I don't get this off season at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 19,515 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

We've got no Oline and no defense worth speaking about.
If there was ever a true test of "next man up" this is it

Highest paid OL in the league. Good luck to him, he's had a lot of family issues to deal with.
He's not worth it, but finding a replacement may not be easy unless they already have a target in mind.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 4,149 Mod ✭✭✭✭bruschi

yeah fair play to him for getting his big contract. dont personally think he was worth that much, but more power to him if he can get it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,905 ✭✭✭TOss Sweep

It is all about supply and demand and as he is the only solid starting LT in the league that was a FA he has now set the bar. As for being worth it I think he is worth it especially when you don't have anyone else to replace him. Solder was the best OL we had last season and did a great job keeping Brady on his feet. In fact over the last 2 season he has been our best lineman. Even when he went through rough patches he was still the best lineman we had

Well Rex Burkhead is coming back at least. No coincidence he’s good on special teams

Good to see him leave with class and dignity. Such a pity it ended the way it did.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,491 ✭✭✭✭StringerBell

Butler spoke with a hell of a lot of class there, More power to him. Makes it feckin worse in a way.

Very disappointed to see solder go, he has been up and down over the years, he has come off a good season though and with a 40 year old QB who your team basically lives or dies with LT is hardly a position to **** about with.

There is surely something in the pipeline planned because losing so much key members of a roster that already needed work in areas is not ideal prep

Has BB gone on holiday or something??
Absolutely no activity to address any of the needs in the roster....there must be a lot of Rutgers guys coming out in this draft or something...

Meh, I rather we sit out the first couple of days of FA than pay average players top tier money. When Kirk Cousins is the highest paid player of all time you know there is something wrong with the first few days of FA

We're absolutely killing it in the race for compensatory picks next year, so there's that.

Lewis, Amendola and Butler have been three of our best stories over the last 3 or 4 season's, as well as being key players, so it's disappointing that they are leaving, but it's good to see them get paid. Well deserved in all cases. Similar with Solder, a stalwart player over a number of years, big part of our Superbowl runs and great to see him get paid.

We made a splash in FA last year, but normal service has resumed. I'd expect we'll pick up a handful of overlooked veterans over the next week.
