For workplaces that are closed today, what are the chances of them being closed for the rest of the week?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,017 ✭✭✭Lucreto

I know it's way too early to tell but what is what are the charts saying next Wednesday is meant to be like?

I have an ACCA exam next Wednesday.

I presume I should cancel the night I have in a hotel tomorrow in Glendalough? Or, perhaps, would the roads be OK-ish?

I would cancel tbh. Roads would be pretty dicey around there.

i would imagine high; as the snow is compacted and frozen it will become slippier than just snow, so transport will get even worse

Daft question but I live in an apt in Dublin, kids v worries about the birds so got some feed ready as recommended. Any point in leaving it on balcony or should I shatter it outside on ground (afraid of vermin)

Its not looking likely that I'll get to Clare from Dublin via car by Friday lunchtime, is it?

I have (soon to be had!) a wedding on Friday..

You might make it if you leave now and never have to leave a salted main road. You may not make it back. Fast forward about 4/5ths the way through the BBC weather report in the video here and check out what is expected for this country on Friday.

Sorry to hear some of you work for twats. Boss call me earlier. Says am I mad to go driving today. "Get the sausages in and have a pinto with your Aulfella". Legend.

And in return he has a happy workforce. Glad you work for someone decent

Just came in the N7 from J14. Northbound has one lane only in places. Some people stuck on ramps. But take it handy.

Looking across southbound it's backed up for ages. Avoid.

Finally got to try out my lidl snow spikes that I bought in 2011 - they are GREAT!

I can now walk on compacted wet ice without skating around the place.

    10/10 would recommend :)

hope that luas, which got me in to workm, will also get me home. I have a meeting from 1:30 which will go on until 4/5. ah well i have good clothing to walk home if i need to. Pair of fleece lined boots which i have previously only worn once or twice - they get too hot - are ideal for these conditions. Think i picked them up in one of Lidls special offers, planned to use them for GAA sidelines, but tbh too hot even in wet wintry days. Snow though - perfect.

Plenty of snow outside my window atm - (merrion square)

I expect i will stay at home tomorrow and following day.

Not an expert but the vermin will probably be in their nests and unlikely to leave, birds, on the other hand, will be flying around. Some birds like to feed on the ground, some like to feed from a feeder so just sprinkle it around. Just do a small bit at a time, it'll keep the children entertained as well throughout the day to watch the coming and going.

3 different means to contact parents used by my kids school and parents still complaining about not knowing the school was closed.
They used Text A Parent,The WhatsApp group and Facebook.
Lo and behold, the ones complaining didn't bother to download the app or join the WhatsApp group.

And yet it remains an orange warning here. Employers here are saying that employees must take a day’s annual leave as it is not a red warning. Crazy stuff - I’ve never seen so much snow here in Kinsale.

Apparantly that can not be enforced. Has to be 30 days notice.
    Twas on the radio yesterday.

Just dropped my wife to work in the pavilions shopping centre which is open..on a red warning?

Only in Ireland would there be a red warning a non essential services still operating.

She just rang to say it's busy and there's families with kids walking around. I just can't get my head around peoples ignorance in this country.

What ignorance? It's a only a little bit of snow.

Why wouldn't a major shopping centre open?

I'm sorry, I don't think I gave full context to my previous message. While I did ask my team to take adverse weather into consideration, all of it was with a clear addendum that they should consider their own safety first.

What I do ask is (just an example) that someone who usually drives to work, perhaps can walk or take a bus, even if that takes longer, and to be prepared for that. I don't think that is unreasonable and would expect the same from other companies. If they call me and say "snowed in and no bus", I won't have a problem with that. But none of them did, they're all at work now, and I may send them home early depending on how things develop.

    Send them home you scrooge

Storm orphelia I could agree with

This no, why shouldn't families be walking around?

Why? Life goes on, we've become weather wimps. Dictated to by committees and government officials. Use common sense.

Another Red alert and I swear to god if my employer insists we take days out of our holidays or work in time to cover I'll strangle one of them. They already asked if we could work in time just in case.
They pulled that stunt during Ophelia, shower of cnuts.

My husband’s boss has expected everyone in today. The same guy saw Ophelia as a money-making opportunity: “everywhere else is closed, we’ll rake it in!”. No, YOU’LL rake it with no regard for your staff’s welfare. And he doesn’t ever give employee bonuses. Gobsh1te.

Question for the experts .. In a red weather warning what MUST close ? Is there official wording anywhere ? Or is it discretionary..

My mother is loving her 2010 snow spikes. Well, she bought them after that snow ended in order to be prepared in future and is finally getting to put them to work.

    Just received this email:

Following a meeting of the Emergency Management Team this morning, it has been decided to end classes/labs etc. today at 3pm.

Staff may leave early, as necessary, from 3pm to ensure their safe return home. The University will be closed from 6pm this evening – all night classes will be cancelled and the University will remain closed tomorrow due to anticipated worsening weather conditions overnight.

A decision about whether or not the University will open on Friday will be taken at lunchtime on Thursday and email will issues to all students and staff on Thursday by 2pm at the latest.

Information will also be posted on the UCC Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/universitycollegecork and on UCC Twitter https://twitter.com/ucc as well as the UCC home page in the News and Views Section.

We hope that all staff and students stay safe during the extreme cold weather and heed the advice of Met Éireann and local authorities.

I've read this post 6 or 7 times, love it!

Good to hear there are some out there that aren't slavedrivers/clowns when it comes to their employees.

    Depending how things develop....

Have you read the announcements from bus companies please look at twitter.

Services leaving Dublin cancelled all over the place....

If your going to see how things develop please don't limit it to looking out the window which is apparently the sum total of your observations
