Just a question for all the people that absolutely hated it , since the original trilogy are there any you actually liked ? if not do you think the franchise will be completely ruined by what has come out since? would you prefer they did movies from another timeline ? in your opinion what would you actually like to see ? just wondering feel free to ignore.

I didn't hate TLJ. It is an enjoyable film, I just don't think its a particularly great Star Wars film. It is not how I would have imagined VII and VIII to go. So much potential, but it has been diluted down to pander to merchandising and box-ticking. There is no sense of ambition in TFA and TLJ. They are safe, by the numbers, competent products. The only thing I will give them though, as being better than the prequels or originals, is the lightsaber choreography and fighting. It is gritty, plenty of emotion, and well suited considering both characters knowledge or lack there of.

As another poster mentioned, there are a few too many things that disturb the overall quality of TLJ.

I would prefer they broke away from the Skywalker timeline as they haven't really made it that interesting.

I watched phantom menace and attack of the clones recently and was struck about how there’s no change in tone across the 3 prequels. They’re kinda one note. The interesting thing is this works to its favour if you watch the clone wars series but that’s not for everyone. (Its set bewteen AOTC&ROTS)
At least this new trilogy has that change in tone film to film but TFA rolls into TLJ quite nicely if you watch them together.

I wish TLJ didn’t feel like the last act of a trilogy rather than the middle act. Really jarring choice story wise but other than that I can enjoy it. Leaves it all wide open for JJ to do anything he wants. He has said he sees 9 as the end of the Skywalker saga. And these new trilogies will be doing different stories in different times so we’re getting the best of both worlds.

'Rogue One' is the sole reason I'm not writing off Diz Wars.

'The Force Awakens' was a lazy retread of the 1977 film, had the shallowest of writing, with bad characters didn't make a whole lot of sense. In the end it was largely meh, but subject to some improvement with a fan edit.

'The Last Jedi' was riddled with the most unnecessary problems in tone, ended the Skywalker saga in a terrible way, had a couple of the most jawdroppingly cringe moments I've seen in a Star Wars film, filled the screen with even more bad characters and, also, didn't make a lot of sense. In the end, it was largely awful and I don't think a fan edit can save it this time.

The sequel trilogy, while marginally better then the prequels (don't start me on those), is just hampered by poor storytelling, zero world building and a lack of direction. It's clear to anyone that there's no throughline whatsoever, even in a flimsy George Lucas way, and that the "make it up as you go along" route isn't working. Plus, it forces the viewer to ignore a lot of what happens on the screen in order to try and get any worth out of it.

I actually couldn't care less what happens in IX.

As for what I'd like to see? No retreads, no character recasts (hello 'Solo'), no "jokes for the kids", no unnecessary backstories that nobody wants (hello 'Solo' again).

If it's a trilogy, make a solid three act play, none of this "yeh, whatever" type approach that we're seeing. If it's a standalone - although they really aren't "standalones" - they're free to use the entire galaxy. Open the thing up.

Agreed on no more backstory movies but we need that Kenobi movie. After that they can do whatever they like I don’t care :)

March 27 home release. That’s much much quicker than previous I think

What I find interesting about that trailer is the two tone approach. The first 40 seconds are disjointed and punctuated with awkward humour, before it becomes a more traditional Star Wars-like trailer. I suppose you could say that the two tones in the trailer is indicative of the divide of opinion over the film itself.

I like the sound of fourteen deleted scenes though, particularly as Rian said many of them were fully completed before being cut.

Anyone know who cut them, and why?

I'm always suspicious of deleted scenes. If the director cut them was it not for a reason? As in, the film flows/works better without them?

I believe Rian's original cut was a little over three hours long. Considering TLJ is the longest Star Wars film yet, I guess he had a tough fight trying to get the runtime to go beyond Revenge of the Sith's. Disney probably said he couldn't have three hours, but two and a half would be an acceptable length.

Director's Cuts can be quite divisive. For me, the Lord of the Rings trilogy is the epitome of a well developed and worthwhile cut. But, some films struggle to justify it. I have the Watchmen extended edition and while most of that is made up of the Tales of the Black Freighter storyline and I enjoy it, I can understand why Warner Brothers were against having it in the theatrical release.

I suppose, as someone who views The Last Jedi as something of a missed opportunity, I am curious to see what else Rian wanted to say in his original vision for the film. Hopefully, they aren't scenes of 'Ahch-To: Bear Grylls Survivor Tips' where we see more footage of how Luke survived there or 'Hour 7 of the longest hot pursuit across the galaxy' where a few resistance fighters decide to play a game of hide and go seek on the ship to pass the time. I would like to see more stuff on Luke, his thoughts, and perhaps more flashbacks to his training temple? Maybe we could see Ben in training and how Luke begins to see signs that things weren't quite right with him.

Cool documentary on the sound design here: http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/video/force-sound-creating-sounds-galaxy-53204229

Towards the end goes into a bit of depth about the clever use of silence. Looking forward to the Blu-Ray to try and more thoroughly appreciate some of those stylistic tics and motifs developed throughout the film

Can someone with some savvy help me with this please? It looks like I’ll have to buy a Blu ray player at last but
I’ve googled this and can’t find an answer but I don’t think my tv is compatible with Blu ray
It’s got a scart Input and a hdmi input but that’s it.
Be a real pain to buy a player and get it home to find I need a new tv also

*also my tv is only 720x1080 afaik so it probably is totally incompatible with one

Or is it? I’m clueless but I’d love to get one for this set.

If it has a HDMI input it can be connected to a blu ray player.

It sounds like your tv is HD Ready I think. What year did you buy it?

    Brillo, thanks Tigger!

I’m not sure but it’s about 5 years ago?
I’ve googled the make and it’s crap(acoustic solutions) info is scant so it’s risky but I’ll give it a bash. Thanks!

How much are you going to spend on it? If ya can you should seriously consider a ps4. It does Netflix, movie files and blu ray. Video games too if ya fancy it.

You can even watch The Last Jedi on it! :)

God no. I stay away from gaming and consoles. Only go back in when there’s a new legend of Zelda. And even then ages later.
Long story short. Bought a WiiU recently to play LOZ twilight princess with a view to getting the switch. Logged 30 hours play. The controller screen broke. Brought it back. They replaced it. Came home to find GameStop gave me an entirely new machine. Saved game was gone. Me and consoles aren’t meant to be together sadly :) plus I get sucked in and months pass and I don’t even realise.
Also why I haven’t even looked at any of the Star Wars battlefront stuff.

I’ll stick with the films and books over the games :)

Someone found the titles of the 14 deleted scenes were getting. Extended Fathier chase sequence?? Please god no. :)

The deleted scenes will be accompanied by an introduction and an optional commentary from the film’s director Rian Johnson. Without further ado, here are the titles for all fourteen deleted scenes:

    Alternate Opening

    Paige’s Gun Jams

    Luke Has a Moment

Poe: Not Much of a Sewer

It’s Kind of Weird That You Recorded That

    The Caretaker Sizes Up Rey

    Caretaker Village Sequence

    Extended Fathier Chase

Mega Destroyer Incursion – Extended Version

Rose Bites the Hand That Taunts Her

Phasma Squealed Like a Whoop Hog

Rose & Finn Go To Where They Belong

Rey & Chewie in the Falcon

The Costumes and Creatures of Canto Bight

    Alternate opening.

Thank god. The more stuff that's available the better chances we have of making a cut of this movie that's actually decent.

My pal had a great idea. If you cut from the moment DJ leaves the prison door open and rose and Finn follow him out you can literally cut all canto bight out completely and just jump to them arriving at Snokes ship.

That’s one edit I can see happening :)

I can't wait to see what the fan editors do with this train wreck.

There's probably a semi decent film in there somewhere, dying to get out. A few slices here and there and it might actually be relatively watchable.

How those cuts are made will require some skill though. Get rid of:
    • Yo momma
    • super leia
    • a porg scene or two
    • canto bight
    • Hardware Wars iron
for starters and you already have a better film. There's probably nothing to be done with the other misteps here and there. Luke dying from too much Force and Rose's luvvy dovey...ech.

There's too much stupid intertwined into the film to truly save it, I think.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 7,611 ✭✭✭david75

Is there a function with Blu ray to watch the film with the deleted scenes included?
That’d be interesting. Except the extended horse chase. Wasn’t a fan.

The hardware wars sight gag? You philistine. That was brilliant piece of comedy. Smart and we'll executed. Sure the 'conference call' stuff was just way too goofy, but the iron joke was a great wee visual skewer :D

Can’t believe anyone has a problem with luke dying either tbh.
The only other way he could exit would have been a big showdown with Snoke and or Ben. That would have been so boring and predictable but also would have caused massive outrage. The bad guys killing our hero would very much be an outrage nuclear holocaust and break the internet.

How much better would that scene have been, if Luke actually showed up in person and held off Kylo until his sister and the rest of the saps in the cave had gotten away, then did a Ben Kenobi.

Can't see anyone complaining about Luke going out that way.

He kinda did tho. Meaning the Kenobi. He picked his moment.
And the total non confrontation confrontation is truly the Jedi way.

I’d have loved to have seen him wreck all those walkers and take kylo out or disable him but that would be so obvious and boring action movie stuff
It isn’t where he is to do that now. Plus it’s way way more powerful what he did do.
Projecting himself across the galaxy though the force?? Deadly!!

*one theory has it that he actually absorbed all those canon shots and that’s why he’s bollixed and avoids even dueling kylo. And that is what killed him But it’s just a theory.

I look forward to chuckling heartily as I hear how silly fan edits have removed half the stuff I loved about this film.

Not surprising but Luke is my favourite thing about this film. Hamill gave it everything and more. He’s brilliant in it. I would have loved an entire film of just him and Rey on the island. But the way his character is shown from complete refusal of the call and Rey obviously needing a teacher to slowly and incrementally being given wake up moments to get him back in, to his final act. Such a brilliant arc. The bit when he’s sitting on the Falcon.. ‘R2???’ He even sounds exactly like young Luke Skywalker again seeing his pal :) and R2 giving him sh!t is just brilliant :) ‘hey! Sacred island! Watch the language!’ :)

I kinda hope we don’t get him as a force ghost in 9. Unless it’s in tandem with Obi wan or talking to Kylo. Headcanon though. Well get what we get.

I'm curious, why are you so hopeful of a Kenobi ghost in 9? What sense would it have considering nobody left alive has any connection to him? I'm not saying it couldn't work but I think it would be very difficult to make it work and not feel like shoehorned fan service.

Just based on several interviews Anthony Breznican gave. He’s our ‘in’ for Lucasfilm. He said that after reys vision in TFA, they aren’t done with Obi wan yet as part of the saga and why they aren’t announcing yet.

Obi wan speaks to her twice in that vision and Yoda in TLJ knows her name (why we must not lose the girl Rey) without any back up or explanation to this point.

It could be it ties into what they have planned for the Obi wan film.

It could be BS reaching too, but nothing is off the table until it’s onscreen. And there’s more onscreen than isn’t at this point.

*and I want a Kenobi film it would be amazing and all we want.
And If Solo does actually fail, it would be a perfect way to get everyone back on board and excited. That announcement would reenergise the entire audience.
A cynical take but that’s probably what’s happening

I would hope and think that if Solo failed they would shelve all stand alone films based on old characters for the time been. The only thing going for a Kenobi film is they could have McGregor return as he was one of the only things that came out of the prequels with much credit. But never have I thought to myself "I wonder what amazing adventures Old Ben got up to while on Tatooine."

But I don't really see why Solo will fail, I think it will do ok business and if word of mouth is good then maybe even better then that.

Now I am interested in seeing how Jedi does in sales versus Awakens. I'm sure it will be down but I wonder by how much.
