I would suggest you try a 2017 BMW 5 series m sport if you liked the A6.

My dad has a 5 series, fine fine car, but I like the Audi. The Audi is also considerably cheaper. I'd also like something different to the old man!

Trying to think of something with the same drivetrain as an R but with huge legroom in the rear and a boot that would take 4 or 5 buggies...

    Depreciation however..

Is that Superb 280 available here?

Just looked. €50k. Some machine wrapped in fairly sensible clothes. Would the depreciation really be that bad I wonder...

Buy it on pcp and then you’re covered if it is a depreciation disaster.
Pretty sure there’s s video review by bob flavin of one in a crazy colour

I don't know about the superb 280, is it a one trick pony?

It's a big car, heavier then the R and less nimble I would suspect.
I can't see it handle as well either. I'm sure it's quick in a straight line though.

I think I would get bored of it very quickly.

To me the superb should be a car you can load up and cover big miles in lots of comfort with good economy. I wonder would the 280 even do 25mpg?
If there was an awd bi-tdi 240, I think that would be the one to pick.

    Yeah I’d tend to agree.
The mpg would be terrible. 25mpg? I didn’t average much more than that in the Golf and you’d park one of those in the boot of the Superb.

I was in the States last week and passed a mk7 golf with an STI badge on the back. I've a suspicion that the owner has played around with the TSI badging or maybe I'm wrong.

    A promiscuous golf owner. :D

I average about 28/29 mpg. Mostly short trips and I generally so not try to be efficient. When my wife drives it she gets mid 30s (eco mode and a light foot).

It is great fun to through around on bendy back roads.. probably not as nimble as a golf, not sure how much heavier.

For me it is a great all-rounder. Loads of room in the back for baby seat, big boot to throw buggy, bike, whatever into and most people look at it and assume it is a 150ps diesel.

Golf R estate surely does a job in between.

You’d have to go to the U.K. for one.

Ah strange. I don't live in Ireland so thankfully not accustomed to the model lottery like I used to be.
One of the advantages of living in a LHD euro country is you get stuff the Brits never even see.

Annoyingly as it'd probably be no.1 on my least otherwise. Saw one in Amsterdam last year and thought it looked excellent, the lapiz blue really suited the shape.

Well you could always import one. I know of a couple of lads who have. But the trouble is offloading what you have privately....

For me... the proportions look wrong. Too much of an overhang over the rear wheels. SEAT somehow make their estate less frumpy looking.

But if you want a rapid estate and not too bothered about aesthetics, then....!!

Based on side profile view, that Seat estate looks way nicer than the R estate imo

I would think this would be as fast as the Skoda 280 in the real world and a lot more economical than all the other suggestions

Nice but appeals to a very different market I would have thought?

Only one issue... it sounds like a tractor, like every other diesel :D

I did test drove a pre-regged Highline Passat, 2 years ago now and almost bought it (sales man wouldn't budge an inch on price, if he had took 2-300e off it I would have bought). They are nice, interior is great and feels good. Lots of spec too on the one i looked at (heated massage seats etc..). I ended up buying a Mazda 6 at the time, almost instant regret.

could only find one in the UK with the same spec (pana roof) priced at £29,995 first registered Sep 2017 so a 172 factor in conversion to Euro and VRT and the price was €42,500 ish give or take rates and vrt.

so in this case worth going to the UK?

Well there would be leeway in the Irish price and if you had a trade in or want pcp then you could do that here.
Personally I think that Passat would be a great buy if you want a fast wagon and I bet the price is negotiable.
I in no way want to run down the skoda superb but I think the Passat looks better and has a more upmarket feel.

Without being a fanboy... have you sat in a highline passat and a style/l&k/sportline superb to compare the feel of both?
