    So... the GTI is gone.

Do I have to hand over my card for posting on this thread?

Still trying to figure out what's next....

Think I will go diesel. My journeys tend to be 100km or so a few times a week.

I think maybe just time for a change. Had a petrol GTI now the GTD. Happy with it, but like to change to something new. Would like an Audi/BMW/Merc for a change, badge snobbery and all that noted!

I looked at Audi A4 190tdi when I traded my gti. Lovely car. I drove a 150 version and the sales guy warned me off the 190 as he said the resale is the same as the 150 and you would not notice the difference in real world driving.
Also when I specced up a 190 sline auto and added a few extras the price was well into the 50’s. Sales guy told me at that price level I should buy a A6 or 5 series beemer as most A4’s sold in Ireland are bog standard 120 ps models and I would lose a packet.
As it transpired I bought a 3 series Bmw and have lost a fortune in depreciation on that anyway but that was my experience with Audi limerick when I tried the A4.

    Quick question,

Do all the latest Golf Rs come with a digital speedo/tacho display or is this an optional extra?

    Many thanks

I'm trying to decide my next move as well tbh.... Decisions, decisions.

Thinking of changing it soon? It's only 2 years old isn't it?

Yes, standard (from Highline trim upwards)

Yup, thats the general vibe you'll get off car salesmen. He's being honest in a way I suppose, as he just doesn't want you to come back in 3 years with a big engined A4 or have you throwing your toys out of the pram with him when you realise it's fallen off a cliff in value.

There's an option to have normal analogue clocks if you don't like digital.

    Congrats!
If the Golf is the only car in the household, then yes, it’s not ideal for your upcoming change in circumstances. You’ll get by for a while but playing boot space Lego gets old and tired very very quickly.

Can anyone tell me what this cable is, and why would it be plugged into an (english) 151 GTD?

MDI cable. Pre dated the current USB interface.

Yeah. He was a very straight guy and a car enthusiast. He was more excited to take my gti for a test drive than I was taking the A4 for one as he hadn’t driven a mark 7 gti before.
How are you settling in to life without the R and with the 4 series?

No bother. Don't particularly miss the Golf to be honest. It's been a bit of a crazy few weeks at work so I suppose I haven't had time to miss it ;)

4 series is v good. It looks great (imo), very comfortable, well equipped (the nav, and infotainment setup is miles better than VW tbh). Generally its really nice to drive and decent poke in it (the auto box is very very good too imo), but at low speeds the diesel roar is a bit annoying alright. MPG is good without being brilliant. I averaged a tad over 40 in the first couple of tanks as I did a couple of long trips but I'd say I'm only doing mid 30's in the current tank  Short journeys, brutal cold weather are probably a big factor.

My brother has a 118d M Sport in the UK as a company car, i'd say his driving is 50/50 unban/motorway. Long term MPG is 39. I thought it would be better to be honest. Nice car to drive alright.

After all the golfs you had I am surprised you’re not missing the R more.
I agree re nav/ infotainment being far superior.
Mpg sounds low but will probably improve. I had a couple of 5’s with the 2.0diesel and mid 40’s was generally where things ended up. I’m getting mid 50’s long term in 330e.
It does seem like a fair few people here are moving on from the golf.

MK7 is around now about 6 years (let’s face it, the 7.5 didn’t bring much new to the party). So it’s only natural that a lot of regulars on here are moving on to something else. Doubtless I would still be in one if circumstances didn’t dictate otherwise. Actually the biggest bugbear I would have if I went back to one would be boot space. The joy of actual useable boot space was something I underestimated greatly until recently. Maybe in time when I’m less reliant on having useable space, I’ll have one again. I can’t see myself buying a new R again though. Perhaps a GTI... MK8.... there’s rumours that they will introduce some hybrid tech in the MK8 GTI. That could be interesting...

Picking up my new Golf R from the dealer on Thursday. What are the recommended alarms /trackers/ immobilizers I should be looking at getting fitted?

Luckily it will be parked in secure underground parking both at home and at the office. No concerns about home invasion for the keys. I know there have been a few incidents like this discussed on this thread. I've no idea what are the best security options for the occasions where it's parked elsewhere.

    Thanks!

It comes standard with a vw alarm and immobiliser.
Another immobiliser I like the look of is the autowatch ghost.

I know a few of you lads don't like Start Stop but I've been having some frequent issues with it. Either it says "Engine must be running" even though it's a normal stop at a red light, or "Car in front moved off" even though I just pulled up...

Also some radio stations sound like when you're leaving the county and losing signal, except I'm still in Dublin. Doesn't happen to them all though but some get very quiet and muffled.

Thinking of jumping ship to an A4 190bhp S Line. Think I need a change from the golf. Another would be my third.

Well that didn't work out how I though. Drove the A4, very unimpressed. Don't like the cabin at all.

Sat in an A6 190 S-Line auto. All but bought it. 172 demo. Excellent deal because there is a new one coming out at the end of the year. Completely different animal to the Golf but I really liked it.

Quite a change alright but those A6 S Lines are a really handsome car. Are you in a GTI or GTD currently?

What specifically did you not like about the A4? From what I’ve seen of them the interior (like the A3) looks pretty sparse unless you’ve spent loads on extra kit.

Currently in a GTD. I just don't like the sparse look with the stuck on iPad mini that doesn't move in the A4. At least in the A6 it's motorised and you can hide it. The whole package of the A4 just wasn't for me. I preferred my Golf.

I think I just like the more traditional interiors, the sparse clean lines of the new Audis I'm not mad about.

Was looking at 2016 a4s (new kind); the 2016 a6 isn't actually that much dearer (granted the a6 is the older model)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,789 ✭✭✭carsfan2

I would suggest you try a 2017 BMW 5 series m sport if you liked the A6.

Yeah, 2 years old soon enough. I'm not in a massive rush, but I don't want to get to the end of the 3 years blind, I fully intend to arrive there with what I want sorted and signed off by then. At the same time, we had a little arrival before Christmas and tbh the car is a lot less capable of being the family car than I expected it to be. Although finding something in the A4/Passat category with a decent petrol engine that won't ride me sideways with depreciation is akin to finding a likeable Trump.

Trying to think of something with the same drivetrain as an R but with huge legroom in the rear and a boot that would take 4 or 5 buggies...

    Depreciation however..
