    Maybe, but a few things.
It's 21 years old so insurance will not be either cheap nor easy to get.
It needs to be registered so that is about 600e (checking the VRT calculator) and then straight away tax it and hope it passes the NCT.
So off the bat that's at least 1k it needs just to have it road legal here - not even counting insurance.
Personally, I think it's a joke price and even at 1k I would think that it's not worth it but I understand these types of cars have a following so it's hard for me to say from a different perspective.

People in the border counties or north don't do vrt and there's a healthy amount of possible buyers in that area.

All types of cars have a following...

There must have been something wrong with your one. They weren't that bad power wise. No hot hatch or sports coupe but for a non performance 1.6 engine they were fine.

I think all that was wrong with it was an approx. 100bhp engine in a relatively large car (and the fact that I was driving a 944 at the weekends probably didn't help).

Meath isn't a border county
You seem to be annoyed about what I think about this car.

    I'm aware of that bear?

People from the border counties and North buying off done deal too, was the point I was making.

    Not annoyed at all.

I simply think you're wrong and I used the fact of exporter prices to prove so.

But these aren't backed up facts though?
I could be completely wrong to it's face value but I still don't think it's worth anywhere near it's asking price.
You mentioned 1k... maybe but if someone in any region of the country (leaving aside the North) decide to go for it they need to chuck a good bit of change at it.
Anyway, I'll leave it there cause it just clogs up the thread.

Exporters give 500-600 for td carina's and avensis' as long as they start and drive. That's a fact.

I completely disagreed with your opinion that it's a €450 car and I then offered my own reasonable opinion that it's easily a 1k car.

But ya I agree there's no point going back and forth over this.

Its actually got quite a nice engine, its a very good looking car, the interior is well spec'd and it is from a time when Peugeots had some degree of reliability.

The electric seat on my mates old one went haywire when he was driving it, pushing him into the steering wheel. He barely managed to pull over and pull himself out!

    Beautiful looking car though!

That's quite funny even though it was deadly dangerous.

They certainly weren't underpowered. As you say they were no hot hatch but still decent enough for what they were.

My dad adored his. Went from that to a 03 1.6 Avensis and it was the Avensis that was sluggish, not the Carina.

The carina was a cracking looking car, the avensis always looked meh!

He changed to a T250 Avensis presumably rather than a facelift T220 with a VVTI engine? I went from a 97' 1.6 Carina to a 01' 1.6 VVTI Avensis back in the day. While neither were rockets I found to Avensis to be the noticeably quicker of the 2. Drove a T250 04 1.6 Avensis briefly and found it to be noticeably slower than either, felt a lot heavier a car than either.

On a side note I would have considered the 01 Avensis to be the better car between the Carina and Avensis given its better overall driveability and smoothness. Just saying that because people rant and rave about the Carina for its reliability. While that's true, if you are prepared to discipline yourself with the Avensis and keep an eye on the oil I don't think there is any reason for it not to be as every bit as reliable as Carina. Yep the earlier VVTI's in particular did burn a drop of oil but not as much as they burnt petrol as some people would have you believe if you listened to their nonsense.rolleyes.png

Not sure how you can think a car with around 90bhp/tonne and total torque of 101lb.ft is not underpowered! By just about any measure (other than your grandads sidevalve Ford) it is a gutless performer - I know because I travelled the length and breadth of the country in one!

They probably are technically speaking underpowered in the scheme of things, certainly by todays standards I'm sure.

But its all relative, they were a 1.6 litre run of the mill family saloon. Just by comparison I also had a 99 Vectra B facelift saloon back in the day and found it well, not nearly as peppy as the Carina or Avensis. Best to keep things in perspective and compare apples with apples and oranges with orangessmile.png. Can't say I've drove many if any other larger bodied 1.6 family bread and butter family saloons from the same era though.

The avensis was a much improved carina e. It looked better, it drove better, it was much more comfortable and the interior was nicer, the 4a-fe was also more reliable in the avensis.

The carina e was really overrated. Ok it was probably one of the more reliable and better built cars out there at the time but it didn't hold a candle to it's predecessor the carina II for outright quality.

The same engine in a corolla hatch made for a car that was quicker than the golf gti of the time.

No one is saying 1.6 carina's were fast but I'd bet you'd struggle to find a run of the mill 1.6 full size 90's saloon quicker than a 115bhp non leanburn carina.

The mondeo, Passat, vectra & bmw 316i were hopeless by comparison.

In fact the leanburn model was still quicker than the majority of the competition.

Because it was lively for what it was. Some of that is down to the gearing but the engine was very free revving in them too.

Yeah it was the T250. Nice car, but way too heavy for the engine.

It's valentines day; perhaps a romantic candle lit dinner with a Carina 2 is in the pipeline?

I found the 1.8 adequate myself at times

Maybe it's just me but €2500 for a make believe-o is a bit much... Unless I'm not seeing the bigger picture?

In fairness from 20 meters back, to the untrained eye, that does actually look a bit like an EVO.

Whenever I see a "replica".. I always think. Anyone that knows what the car is trying to be (Evo, S4, RS6 etc..) will spot that it is a fake straight off and the rest of people don't know what it is and won't be impressed. so, what is the point?

    2500 for a 18yr old Lancer..

No doubt as make believe-o's go this one appears pretty spot on, but it would always be in the back of my mind if I were driving this that I'm being a bit of a fraud!

    Maybe I'm overthinking it :D

Yeah, I don't mind factory sporty looking non fast cars like Fords ST line or VWs R line etc but handmade replicas are completely different, I couldn't drive a 1.3 EVO.

Ah I meant in the legal way, where there may be two addresses or where a person legally lives in the North but works in the republic.

I must say I liked the diesel evo rep that was on DD about a year ago.

    A 1.6 88bhp Sti replica Perhaps :pac:
Seriously, all that money spent and couldn't stretch to replace those trippy door cards...

    'Padraig' is ambitious ........
