As Sheriff J W Pepper in the Bond movies says "speak English boy"

These are the English translations that's why we use them.

It was only a matter of time.

We all collectively decided to stop calling Beijing Peking and go with the actual Mandarin name for the city a few decades ago

The correct name of the area I grew up in is actually Ryanstown Street, Fearnan’s Fort, Blackpool

I can't wait to go back packing this year; Alba, Cymru, Kern, Dumnonn, Frankia, Gaul, Etrusca, Euskadi and Scandia should be nice.

In parts of Northern Ireland, locals whitewash the 'London' out of Londonderry signs to make plain old Derry.
They should whitewash out the 'Derry' part. That'd really feck with some heads.

    :D

PalmersTOWN being called Palmerston. Wreck the head. There is a Palmerston but that is in Rathmines D6. Also some folk can't tell the difference between Clonshaugh and Clonskeagh.

My mam calls it that. Only time I would ever want to rage violence against my mother. Really annoying. (I'm pedantic)
I was going to include that actually. We say Paris with the S pronounced, whilst its called "Paree". Why do we say Paris and not "Paree"?

    Because we speak English.
Why don't we call it Páras, since we're Irish?

    Why indeed!

On a recent jaunt around the southwest, it was bloody infuriating to spend an afternoon unable to locate Queenstown on a map or signpost, only to be told by one of the natives that it is in fact now known as "Cove" or some similar gaylick derivation!

Since we have diverted off to complaining about pronunciations, people should be aware that not every place name has only one accepted standard form. Live and let live and let them say Renla and Pamerstun.

If it weren't for those froggy normans we'd be calling Ireland, Eireland.

Qatar is pronounced Cutter, not Kat-ar like is often heard here. Las Vegas sounds more like Los Vegas and not Lass like the BBC always make the mistake.

The scribes and poets were happy enough to refer to Ireland as Banba or Fodhla too...

why is it Côte d'Ivoire these days and not just Ivory Coast, as in why do we say that one in French but pretty much only that one?

Ballsbridge= Droichead na Magairlíní = El Puente de los Cojones.

    Stillorgan = Bod gan Bhogadh.

Hackballscross = Cuir scian chun Chroise na Liathróidí

Don't forget Effin. Years ago the public address in Knock refused to announce that the Effin bus would leave at seven o'clock. Now there's one that needs to change.

Pearse Street station when referring to Pearse station, Westland Row - like nails down a blackboard.

I tend to go by how things are pronounced in ads because I figure a company's marketing team will be pushing for their brand to be correctly identified (if you've ever worked with marketing people you'll know how protective they are over their brand), and Qatar Airlines always pronounce it Katar in ads.

I think that we should keep pronouncing places our way till foreigners pronounce our names correctly.

    Example:
    Turin - Torino
    Milan - Milano
    Rome - Roma
    Florence - Firenze
    Venice - Venezia
    Vienna - Wien
    Munich - Munchen
    Cologne - Koln
    Spain - Espana
    Germany - Deutschland

I'm sure there's loads more, what's the cheese?

    Ehh... What?
