So should, say, the French say Ireland rather than Irlande?

You should go on boards.it boards.es and boards.de and tell them we're called Ireland or Eireann and not Irlanda/Irland

Those are in different languages not the wrong names thats what they're called if speaking in English obviously if you spoke French or German you would call them what they are in those languages accordingly.

Éire, actually. Éireann is the genitive case. ;)

    Paris - Paris

I was going to include that actually. We say Paris with the S pronounced, whilst its called "Paree". Why do we say Paris and not "Paree"?

People referring to Ranelagh as "Renelagh"

    Just f*ck off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,239 ✭✭✭Jimbob1977

    They are called exonyms

    'Londres' is London in French

In Ireland, Kilternan is often misspelt Kiltiernan on road signs.

Cahersiveen has loads of alternative spellings.

In parts of Northern Ireland, locals whitewash the 'London' out of Londonderry signs to make plain old Derry.
