Can't understand why Cillian keeps taking frees when Evan Regan and Jason Doherty can pop them over just as easy. Frustrating especially with 2 extra players

Fairly sure Cillian came on for Regan .........and to say he pops them over just as easy is not true
    Doc yes
    Regan no

Really disappointing night at the office. We didn't deserve anything out of that.

Jason Doherty will have to start taking the frees if Cilian doesn’t get back to his previous form .

He missed two he probably should have got tonight . We can’t afford those sort of chances to go a-begging .

It was still clearly a mistake to have O'Connor take over all frees. When he came on first, it was for a free that suited a left footer. As Mayo lacked left footers on the pitch, it maybe made sense that O'Connor take that one. But the next one should have gone back to Doherty. He hadn't put a foot wrong with the frees that night so he should have been left on the right footed frees. I am very very doubtful that Doherty would have missed his free if he had been left on the frees but Mayo screwed up by putting O'Connor on all frees when he came on. They should have said - O'Connor on the frees for a left footer (even though he is right footed) and Doherty continue with the right footed frees. It sent out the wrong signal that Doherty was dropped from the frees automatically when O'Connor came on.

Pulling and dragging has to stop as black cards are irrelevant when your 4 or 5 up . It should be a free on the 21 . That will stop the consistant crap that goes on .
How mayo don’t capitalize on numerical numbers is beyond me . Same with Galway a few weeks ago . They were down to 12 and looked like they had a man spare . I’d like to see mayo more cynical in defence . we could learn from Dublin and Kerry on a few things .
Very niggly game with mayo off invterms of what’s required . Intensity was championship level though .

    We struggled tonight. Poor display.

One of the few positives from tonight was David Clarke in goal. Here's his excellent penalty save.

Evan Regan rumoured to be in hospital with a broken jaw.

This is the point I was trying to make but you put it better. I would even go so far as to say that JD should be put on free taking duties full stop. Remember that free from the left hand side against Kerry (after Cillians black card) straight over without a fuss. COC is out of form in my opinion.

That's terrible news if true,it was a bad tackle.

He seemed to be very badly concussed leaving the pitch. He's had some measure of misfortune in his career thus far with two fractured collarbone injuries.

That would be my reading too.

Probably wouldn't be overly concerned by the performance tonight. We are slow enough starters in the first few rounds of the league but we should pick up the 3 wins altogether to guarantee safety which I would expect Rochford to be happy with. Think the win last week up in Clones papered over a fairly average performance against a mediocre Monaghan team who probably should have beaten us but for poor shooting though

    Why do I bother.

The rest of the Mayo people have got over the crippling inferiority complex. Time to get over it.

How ****ing insulting to your own team that you scoff at the idea that ye might beat Kerry in a tight game at home by 4 points.
I wasn't wrong in he end despite it being said in jest!

Haha after all that. No yerra about it though. A combination of factors, exceptional shooting from Kerry (1-14 from play) and awful shooting from Mayo (1-2 or 1-3 depending on whose stats you read). Kerry looked better for 70% of the game (to my surprise) but for the other 30% they gave up some serious goal chances. That lead to 2 goals and 2 red cards.

If Enright doesn't stop the ball on the goalline its a completely different game.

Delighted with the win and 50 minutes of great football. The last 20 minutes were dour and cynical but immense effort shown from young and old. Paul Geaney played a captains role, tracking back tirelessly and then using every inch of MacHale Park to get space to attack when we were down to 13.

Diarmuid O'Connor had a good game for Mayo. Hard to tell who else stood out in the game with how scrappy it ended up.

A lot of cynical tackles from Kerry and very telling that Mayo didn't give up a single free in a scorable position to Kerry. Come championship that may be key. It's a huge weakness in the Kerry team (along with the inability to deal with runners through the middle). Mayo's weakness once again is in the scoring department. Cillian and Doherty don't look sharp. Regan and Douglas can't get into the positions to have a good shot at goal (though when they did last night they were fouled).

Surprised Aidan or Barry Moran weren't tried in Full Forward. High ball is a killer for our Fullback line. Some of Mayo's footpassing last night was woeful. Lost count of how many passes went straight to a Kerryman.

Plenty to work on for both sides. Nothing won in February, but nice to come away with a hard earned 2 points.

    Pail Geaney was the difference
    He was exceptional

It is very likely that he will keep with him. He will have to get roasted before he will release him of his duties but I would give him a bit longer to see if he can get back to good form.

Last night's defeat was plain and simple stupid. I think we missed Keegan in a game like yesterday. We don't know how to win games that are there for the taking.
The most disappointing part is that Rochford will not start anyone new up front where we clearly have major problems and need some new blood. I just get the feeling that Rochford is not progressing with this squad but standing still. I think teams are catching up on us as well and next weekend will tell alot. It is early days but yesterday's defeat is a bad loss because we had two extra players, got goals at certain points to push on but didn't.

Kerry must have been laughing all the way down.

I fear what Comer will do to him in Salthill next week.

100% legit concern. You really need a touch tight marker for comer and track him. For me there is only one player that does this but he is out for a while.

I thInk Keane is the only one strong enough to boss and frustrate comer .

Where were all the other red card incidents in your opinion?

The yellow for breaking Evan regans jaw was certainly a red
There was another similar one around the middle of the park punished with yellow towards the end

    So I suppose down to 11 :D

Ok so you are sending off the same player twice? We'll go back up to 12 then!

I had a feeling he got a second one alright but wasn’t sure
Better team won anyway end of story
Ye should have been out of sight by half time
    Geaney the difference

Yeah, this time of year it doesn't really matter anyway. And none of the top teams can claim that they aren't cynical! Wouldn't be top teams without it. Except maybe super blue dubs! ;)

A ref friend of mine from donegal counted 6 red card offences for kerry as he saw it. He lost count of the yellows and blacks as he saw it. I really lament the days that the Gooch and his friends were teaching us all how to play the beautiful game with skill, determination and patience. It was a pleasure to watch goochs kerry play, even when getting a hammering. Dragging, pulling, rugby tackling, punching and head butting, jaw breaking were the order of the day yesterday from kerry, not a good example to set for our youth imo.

Kerrys right full and half forwards have lovely kicks, very reminiscent of the Gooch.

On kerrys kickouts they managed to keep getting 2 on 3 very easily, winning lots of their kickouts.

That said our frees were awful and when the ref finally gave the reds, not being able to take advantage was really strange. Either overtrained or unfit imo. There didn't appear to be the strength to do the forward runs, nor someone nominated in a game plan to go forward creating space, on a sending off???

    Clarke superb under serious pressure.

What Kerrys no 6 showed us is that aiden can be pushed into a joint yellow. A follow on tactic of that sort, would be to then switch another pusher onto aiden to get him a second yellow and that's that. Well have to be careful!

 Thankfully we have wonderful sportsmen like Cillian O'Connor to show them the way!

The game itself has changed alot in the past few years. Don't know if a player like gooch would be suited as well as only a few years ago.
