    Focus? Away from TLJ?
It’s only playing about 1700 theatres in the US right now. Still making money but not loads.

Yep, they wanted TLJ to have its run without drawing fans towards Solo.

Makes sense. Always thought they’d put the trailer in front of TLJ towards the end of its run. That’d give a mad boost to TLJ ticket sales. Meet Joe Black made an insane amount of money simply cos it had the phantom menace trailer in front of it.

Full trailer Monday on good morning America. So around lunchtime here.

I am fascinated to see how this movie is going to look and play out . . Mainly because I had very little interest in it, but I felt the same about Rogue one...

    See? Now we're all excited.

I think everyone is interested in how it's going to play out. Whether it'll be a trainwreck, the "best" Star Wars film ever or just - as I believe it'll be - pretty meh, with some great parts, but hampered by a lack of Han Solo and stuff nobody wanted answers for.

My worst expectation is that it'll do well enough to convince Disney that Star Wars fans, in general, are ok with recasting classic characters and then we're on slippery slope.

I'd be more plesantly disposed to it, if it was 'Jimmy Scrambles: A Star Wars Story' and the film had to stand on its own legs, without the cash grab vibe.

I, too, was a bit "oh dear" about 'Rogue One'. But Edwards set out to make a film that was respectful to the broad story. The genesis of that film was an unflimed plot element from the original film. This film's kernel is "Hey it's Han Solo, what's not to like?"

Thing is, if it is a (relative) disaster, I feel like there are already a plethora of excuses Kathleen Kennedy & co. will trot out; no doubt Lord and Miller will be convenient sacrificial lambs in this instance. I don't believe audience reaction will figure in any this, if indeed it is nothing more than an unabashed nostalgia-w&nk, after-all the beauty of Social Media means you can find any narrative you wish to validate your own perspective.

Didn’t everyone think Rogue One was going to be a disaster as well? Low expectations is a good thing.

I suppose it's the difference between the character prequel and the narrative prequel. You can imagine events and situations that might lead up to the point we originally joined a story - New Hope did literally start at the very end of a battle, so there was an organic point you can enter prequel territory - but characters are a different beast, especially when they're more archetypes than actual fleshed-out people.

I think it would be a strange decision to try to end this movie just before Rogue One... as in, the chronology would be Solo, straight into Rogue One, straight into A New Hope...

Nobody will be able to make excuses especially about lord and miller. Over 80% or ot was result by Howard so it’s all on him.

Seeing a lot of stuff about the design language being really weird and more 70s sci fi than Star Wars but if that’s the worst thing about it is that it looks weird, I can live with it. One guy also said ‘you’re looking at Han Solo. It’s him’ about Alden in some promo shots so let’s see.

I agree with the sentiment. If the character of Han is anything other then perfection (which is very hard to imagine) this is going to be a very divisive movie.

I don’t get as annoyed as you with Disney using existing characters or remaining within the old franchise. Prob cause I’m listening to so buddhism stuff that’s all about accepting thugs as they are instead of getting upset about how I want them to be! I think I’m pretty good at letting annoying things go. But I agree that they should branch out from the originals. Is it not possible to invest even a fraction of the budget in an old republic movie or other historical canon?

I actually have zero expectation for this, so no doubt I'll like it :)

You know, despite all the bad buzz, I actually have a lot of faith in Howard, Kennedy and Kasdan to deliver. That's one hell of a trio right there. Howard is a safe pair of hands, but what's widely considered the best film in the franchise (Empire) was directed by a safe pair of hands. Kershner was an old pro but he was no auteur nor did he need to be. Even the disastrous director replacement and reshoots don't worry me that much. Rogue One turned out great despite also undergoing massive reshoots. It would seem that most of the crew remained in places despite the director swap. The fact that Lord & Miller weren't able to fill the crew with loyalists says a lot about how much faith LFL had in them to begin with. If Abrams or Johnson had been replaced half way through the shoot they would have taken half of the crew with them.

I never saw how ‘reshoots’ be and a byword for troubled / crisis. It’s the director going in and seeing he needs different stuff. The studio fixing the Lord and Miller thing was the best move if they were going too comedy with it.
They’ll just need to makes sure they’re on the same page as their directors here on in.

You’re dead right though. You can’t really dismiss Kennedy/Kasdan and Howard.

Interestingly gritty, 'understated' (I use the term loosely) aesthetic, was expecting something more overtly vibrant given the bold white & yellow colour palette they've adopted elsewhere.

Like the editing in that teaser, the way the cuts and soundtrack gel is neat.

The dirty/gritty aesthetic is nice looking. The score is awful though. I look forward to the full trailer tomorrow.

The Falcon being brand new is annoying. How it does it go from that to being a piece of junk in the space of 10 years?

Anyway Bradford Young’s work looks amazing. Some very overt nods to Blade Runner in that teaser. I wonder if the whole film is like that? Kasdan likes his noir so who knows. The look might be dark and gritty but the tone is pretty quirky, not far off I how I expected Lord and Miller to approach this.

Regarding toy pic, why can’t Stormtroopers just be regular old stormtroopers? (Not opening this up to merchandise discussion)

Trailer is a bit... I’m not too sure about the voices I’m hearing. Quirky, comical empire guy, and Solo is not giving me the vibe of Han so far. But that’s just initial 20 second trailer response. I’m hoping it’s not an elongated version of that with still no clearer an indication of what Alden Ehrenrich is like in the role. I’ve faith in him, but the snippet of audio didn’t do it for me.

And guys, Rogue One was an awesome battle but a mess of a film. It’s the law of diminishing returns. The flaws get worse and worse with each watch and I find them harder to sit through.

I agree. The hammy/breaking the 4th wall-style humour from the Empire officer is jarring. My biggest concern is that the film will spend its time putting in moments that foreshadow Han's behavior in the OT.

Well much the same way you have many different sections in the army and different troops with different skill sets.
Alden, I think he has the inflection down. It sounds like Han to me.
The Falcon looking new makes sense. Lando owns it at this point and has it all pimped out I reckon.
Han breaks it all down and distresses it to look like junk to avoid imperial notice while smuggling :)

Deffo has a Blade runner vibe to it.

    Full trailer drops tomorrow afternoon.

I was all for that but the Rogue One did its whole thing with Death troopers who were useless and not given one cool badass moment. I’m over the need for new style of troopers unless they are shown to do something the other troopers don’t do.

I'm referring to the dialogue itself: "I'm gonna be a pilot. The best in the galaxy", with the cheeky nod of "Oh yeah, sure." from the Officer. We all know who Han becomes, how about making him the best pilot by his actions not by playing some 4th wall joke with the audience where we call all go: "Ha, silly Empire Officer. We know he becomes the best. The joke is on you."
