Mayo News Podcast sponsored by Vaughan Shoes national football league preview.

The National football league is just days away and the podcast returns with a special preview show.Mayo play Monaghan in Clones on Sunday but before all that we have lots to catch up on.Host Rob Murphy is joined by Mike Finnerty and John Gunnigan along the way.We have a full review of the FBD League,a look back at the Mayo News Clubs stars awards where we spoke to guest of honour Anthony Daly and if that's not enough we have Billy Joe Padden interviewing Chris Barrett.

Listened to it myself last night.

I was a bit disappointed that when they started talking about players they'd like to see step up during the league the ones mentioned were Keane, Gibbons, Regan and Barry Moran.

Now all of the above have had major injury problems in recent years and it would be great to see them come back and have the seasons of their lives, but with the exception of Barry Moran the other three have unfortunately failed to really establish themselves when given the opportunity over the last few years.

I was hoping that the segment of the podcast would talk more about guys we have not seen multiple times before that could make an impact.

I see now that both Regan and Gibbons start on Sunday so the opportunity is once again offered to them two.

in fairness, I alway felt Gibbons gave his all. Keane is a decent footballer but the most disappointing is regan. He has not pushed on at all and lacks upper body strength to take the pressure and stay on his feet. It would be brilliant if he really improved but I am not so sure anymore.

You would think Rochford would have pushed in some new guy into the forward line to give them a crack. very disappointing to not try someone new like Reape. Nice to see Loftus given more time, he really needs game time to improve.

He was given an extended break due to the amount of games he played last year and is now playing hurling instead ????
    Crazy imo
At his age now it really has to be one or the other

2 points in the bag and some game time for newer players . Cant complain on that - based on Midwest commentary.

Super win for the lads v Monaghan minus Conor McManus.Monaghan without stating the obvious are a different side entirely without their forward maestro.

We were out of the traps but Andy took a lovely score with his ciotog. His movement was very good today as always.Gradually we got a grip on proceedings after two poor frees missed by Evan Regan and Neil Douglas.

Some of the forward play interchange was very good given the conditions. All square at the break was a good outcome given the strong wind.On the restart Diarmuid missed a guilt edged goal chance after Aidan O Shea won a throw ball post Rory Beggan's penalisation post a kick out whilst there was a second ball on the pitch.Pretty harsh.

TBH we were very much in control for large portions of the second half with midfield dominance and our ability to win the majority of breaking balls. However they were allowed back into the game due to our inability to win our ball inside and poor passing inside.

Paddy's winning score was worth the admission money.

Missed the red card offence on Aidan but the referee showed a red after consulting with the umpire. The second red was bizarrely not shown as a straight red for a clear strike on Jason Gibbons.

David Clarke had a relatively easy day in goal with the odd stray kick out.The full back line was very impressive.Young Eoin O Donoghue greatly impressed and took his score very well.Ger Caff had a very good day at the office, ditto Brendan Harrison.

Boyler was excellent today, what a warrior.Shane Nally and Stephen Coen had solid if not spectacular outings.Aidan and Jason Gibbons were very work man like and took a firm stranglehood on midfield in the second half.

Kevin Mc was an excellent link man as always.Neil Douglas and Evan Regan were excellent with their freetaking and showed well for the ball but spilled some ball inside.Diarmuid O Connor missed a couple of chances but got through a ferocious amount of work.

Most of the substitutes were not on long enough to make a real impression but IMO Adam Gallagher stood out.

In summary it probably should have been a more comfortable win but it was overall an impressively controlled performance. One to warm the cockles so early in the league and was in stark contrast to our second half capitulation in the same fixture last year.

    Roll on the Kingdom!

I think the new kick out rule will suit us more than any other team

I must say I wasn't confident today, I felt monaghan would be much further ahead in their training and would be targeting this as a complete must win, so what a game to win.

These points could be absolutely vital, as I certainly won't get carried away just yet but surely two of kildare, donegal, Tyrone and galway are very winnable

When was the last time we won our first league game?

Although as I post this a Kerry match from some year recently springs to mind, but we really have tended to be slow starters

Couldn't agree with you there, not sure how many times he was on the ball but the one time that stood out was the shot, FFS 35 yards out in front of the goals with a strong wind and you drop it into the goalies hands

    Caff was my MOTM

Yes very impressed with Ger Cafferkey. He had a drive in him. I expect good things this year from him. He just needs to believe in himself and his ability.
Eoin O'Donoghue, Gibbons, Douglas impressed me.
Yesterday was invaluable experience so I expect to see more from these lads.

I'd love to think Mayo have a solid full back but I'm afraid I can't come around to that.

In 2016 and 2017 Mayo played 8 games v Tyrone, Tipp, Roscommon, Kerry x 2 and Dublin x 3 without a recognized full back.

In 2016 they conceded 3 goals, two of which were own goals and one of which was a penalty.

In 2017 they conceded 3 also.

There is some evidence out there to suggest that Mayo fare better at the back without a recognized full back.

Any views on a change of captaincy?I know Cillian's isn't starting as yet but I'd be of the opinion that relieving Cillian of the captaincy would of benefit to his overall game.

A massive two points to pick up yesterday. How many times have we lost to a last minute sucker punch in the league during recent times? It's nice to be on the other end for a change.

A win on Saturday would make a it a very productive week. Two wins from two would also make a change - we're usually fighting for our lives come the last game. There should also be a big crowd in being it the first real game in Castlebar since the summer, playing the old enemy Kerry and a Saturday evening throw-in under lights. Looking forward to it now.

I saw the Kerry Donegal game on the box. Both teams looked impressive. Wouldn’t be too confident of overcoming the Kingdom. They have a lot of good young fellows trying to make a name for themselves. I know it’s the league and anything can happen.

isnt it mad that the good young fellas on the mayo squad aren't trying to make a name for themselves.

Cillian is definitely still captain. He gave the pre match team talk in the huddle before the game after all the other subs had headed for the bench. I presume he must be a great leader off the field because on the field, I wouldn’t call him a good leader - and this is not about how well he’s playing but more his temperament that lets him down.

Thanks for that.I was over the far side so I didn't see that.

I haven't particularly noticed any outlandish leadership qualities on the pitch. His temperament has at times let him down but his form in recent years hasn't been as good as in the past.IMO relief of the captaincy might benefit his game but hell what do I know.:)

Some people just like to start an argument over nothing.
Mayo had 1 debutant (league & championship). Kerry had 4.
If you bothered to look at the Mayo first 15, you would see that, other than Eoin O'Donoghue, they are all well established in the Championship panel.
Mayo have players who have been given chances in previous years in the FBD and league, but who get dropped for CHampionship. And now are back in for another chance. In terms of intercounty age, I wouldn't call Neil Douglan, Jason Gibbons, Evan Regan etc "young".
We certainly don't have any Clifford or Sean O'Shea.

Kerry just managed to get past a 14 man Donegal team and when their backs were already a concern they shipped 3-14 in the process, at home.

And even though there were some good performances only the most ardent of Kerry fans, or lazy media hacks would see that game in a purely positive light.

I'd be very disappointed if Mayo did not win on Saturday.

They got a good away win, now is a chance to build on it and get some early points.

Kerry on the other hand have the home win in the bag and will not be targeting a game against a top 2 team with new players away from home as anything more than a development excercise.
A win would be a huge bonus for them and a bad result for Mayo.

Only saw the highlights but I thought Kerry looked wide open at the back.
