Painting IKEA Furniture

Hi guys,

First interior project - I bought this IKEA table at the weekend and want to paint it grey to match the room. I've read numerous blogs and watched Youtube videos but there seems to be conflicting ideas on how to go about it?

Step 1) Do I sand it or don't I?
Step 2) Primer
Step 3) Paint (If anyone has any recommendations I'd be grateful!)
Step 4) Is there a step 4? Do I need to coat with anything?

Ikea sells that same table in grey, I've seen it in real life and it's lovely.

Might be a lot less hassle to bring back your white one and exchange for the grey one?

I had my eye on it but it’s been discontinued unfortunately!

I painted a new kitchen unit drawer set with a special undercoat designed for the purpose of undercoating 'plastic' coated furniture. This was painted/laquered rather than foil wrapped. The paint then went on beautifully and has not worn or been damaged at all. (Originally the so-called painter painted it just with normal paint and it immediately came off in sheets.)

I suggest you do not sand it, but copy down the description from the ikea page where it tells you what all the finishes are and go into a good paint shop and ask for a suitable undercoat.
