How to make a USB hardware wallet

I would like to make my own USB hardware wallet as Ledger Nano is not available until March.

I currently have a Usb with Linux Ubuntu 12.04 on it.

How do I remove this and Install Tails or the latest Ubuntu.

Tails uses Tor so is it suitable if you have a Coinbase account.

Would an External hard drive be a better option. Could it hold a Full Node and connect to Internet only when you need to access exchange or does the node need to constantly connected

I also seen Bitkey advertised. Has anyone used it
