Zoned heating using smart valves

I've a gas boiler that runs all rads in our house and we do not have a thermostat installed. Instead we turn on the heat when we are cold and turn it off if it gets too hot.

    Simple enough.

I know of zoned heating systems but we don't have that either. However I was thinking it might be possible to fit smart thermostat valves to the rads and essentially fake a zoned system. We'd turn on the heat but only have the rads that we want (eg downstairs rads) 'on' and turn upstairs off via the app.

Is this possible? If so what system would people recommend?
