They are an ethnic group, and obviously prejudice on the basis of ethnicity is indeed racism...but I presume you know this.

Know fellows involved in sulky racing (they own stables for point to point horses). It's far from unique to travellers, indeed they admit travellers treat their horses a lot better than others simply because they are such a good source of income for them.

The idea that sulky racing should be banned is silly stuff. But obviously road traffic laws should be enforced.

Sound. Yes most Travellers treat their horses fine, As usual its the scumbags that ruin it for everyone.

Wouldn't like to see it banned either, Banning things doesn't work.

Id say the idea that sulky racing should be allowed to continue in its current form, on open roads, is silly stuff. If people want to do it, then apply for formal road closures, or go to a track, its madness that innocent motorists are put at risk to facilitate this racing.

Surely racing on a private track designed for horses than a public road designed for motorised vehicles would be safer and more suitable for all stakeholders, including the horses?

Oh can't disagree. But it's a bit like rallying. The roads will be closed for formal races, but you'll always have fellows who fancy a bit of practice. Around here they usually stand miles apart on country roads on mobiles, and let the driver know when a car is on the way.

The notion that Travellers are an ethnic group in Ireland is laughable. They trace the origins of the lifestyle to the time of Cromwell, a few hundred years ago, not a few thousand years ago. They haven't evolved differently to the rest of the Irish population.
They had the status of an ethnic group in the UK because they are Irish, just like any Irish person on the UK. We just had to make sure they got the same status here. They are nothing like the Roma's whose heritage and ethnicity is much older and complex, they don't deserve the status of an ethnic minority.
And the issue of sulky racing is surely obvious to all, regardless of a person's background this practice is dangerous and illegal, but it wouldn't be a thread of this type without Conor74 making generous concessions to the Travellers now would it?

On public roads that we pay tax for and should be able to use safely, it's anything but a silly suggestion.

I do enjoy your logic. They are a separate group in the UK, and they are, not because they are travellers, but because they are Irish, yet they're not classed as Irish, but travellers, because...because...ummmmmmmm, why are they not just simply classed as Irish then null?

That’s odd. I’ve talked to horse owners and they have said the exact opposite about how travelers treat their horses, that they put them in dangerous situations and when they’re injured they leave them to die etc.

Sulky racing should be banned, just like cock fighting was.

This whole ethnic status works to a treat they can now accuse us of racism for pointing out the unsavoury acts of their culture.

    What are you on about?

They are Irish as they are from the island of Ireland the identity themselves as Travellers as they and their ancestors for a few hundred years have lived on the road.

They are not in any way drastically different to the average Irish person in terms of ethnicity. They are a social or cultural group, not an ethnic group. They are Irish people, not a outlying ethnic group of any type at all, they are Irish.

Your constant defense of their criminality and anti social behaviour on this site regularly defies any type of logic. I'm not sure what your angle is
and you are entitled to your opinion but the statistics prove that Travellers aren't the unfortunate victims you paint them as,they have a bad reputation and they've worked tirelessly to achieve it.

Sulky racing should be either outright banned or only allowed in a controlled environment and if the right permits are acquired. I can't race my car on the road. In fact there are very few places and rules that would allow me to race my car legally. The same should be for sulkys.

Anyone who thinks different is ignorant

Sulkie racing is an honorable ancient tradition carried out by fearless riders on well trained and well treated horses, From deep in the mists of history came the hardest and most lawless of enriching cultural folk. We should be happy to share our land with such people, We should learn from our betters.

    :pac:
    Such bollocks.

I've seen the results of how Travellers treat their animals, on several occasions I've seen dead horses tethered to ropes, they truly do have an appallingly poor record with animals they have no use for.

They are an ethnic group and shouldn't be. They are not a different race.

Most of them that I know are complete and utter scumbags and I know for a fact with camera footage that they are thieves vandals and aggressive toward me and others hat work in my area. I think I know one who isn't a scumbag. But to be honest I wouldn't trust the man as he calls himself the king of the halting site.

I would never tarnish them all with the same brush. I am sure there are loads of innocent families on that ethnic group that just want to live their lives. But I can only comment on what I know as fact.

This is all getting very confusing. They are not a race. They were ‘in’ a race.

Don’t mean to be pedantic, but I do get sulky over details.

This is very untrue. Don't think I've ever come across a travellers horse in decent condition and well looked after and i have been to many a sale.

That's rally drivers and petrolheads for you.

A far far worse problem on roads around here than travellers will ever be. Blocking roads while they do their doughnuts and diffing.

Your right it's insane. The lads I have the dishonour if putting up with, have a couple of dogs. They are usually found in a retail park car park wondering around with a rope being dragged from their necks. They're fearful of anyone approaching them. The poor things are under weight and often injured. I've witnessed them being kicked but nothing can be done. Animal welfare told me they have had loads of complaints but they are warned not to remove the animals.

I work in that retail park and their site is next to us, which is the reason I see all this.

Like I said I'm sure they are not all like that but the ones I know.....

Just read the below article in the independent. These people really are sub human, they lack intelligence, compassion, empathy and just basic common sense.

Sulky racing is bad enough without the added obstruction of cars/white vans "protecting the race".

I hope this woman and her unborn child are ok and for the the cretins involved in the race, well I can't really say what I'd like to see happen them.

I wonder will any arrests be made.......

Words fail me. What mentality or lack of, thought it ok to return to the scene and video it’s after?
