1080p v 1440p v 4k

Hi just wondering what people thought about the different resolutions and what you all game at? does a 1080p 144hz monitor take the lead against a 1440 or 4k monitor with 60 hz in respect of gaming?

Poll is skewed as it's vertical resolution only, what about ultrawide?

I'm on a 34" 3440x1440 21:9 ultrawide @60Hz only with a 1080Ti. With this screen this is my third GPU upgrade and finally I have a GPU that can play all games at 60G FPS. I wouldn't be happy with the current GPU performance @4k.

I am thinking about a 4k screen for programming but don't need a mega GPU for that.

If you are going 1440p then do yourself a favour and get a 144hz. I think most of them are that anyway. I'm lucky as i have both resolution's at 144hz but if you've a capable rig then go for 144hz.

Thing to remember for 1440 144hz you dont need to be hitting that 144fps constantly especially if you have a gsync monitor.
My rig is more suited to 1080p gaming but i have a 1440 144hz gsync monitor and my gaming is great with it, ofcourse i dont hit 144fps constantly but anything from 80+ is buttery smooth thanks to gsync.
My plan is to buy a more suitable gfx card whenever the current crazy prices come down [currently have gtx970]

1440 144hz is the sweetspot.
Next id go for would be 1080 144hz.

Ill never use a 60hz monitor again for gaming, if you have the hardware go for 1440 144hz, even if you dont have totally ideal hardware 1440 144hz is fantastic even on older gfx cards ,just turn down settings to medium.

What GPU/CPU are you running?

1440p 60hz for me. My rig plays most things at that setting, but a 144hz monitor was above my budget when i was buying one.

Tempted to get an ultrawide screen this year though.

35" 3440x1440 21:9 ultrawide @120Hz G-sync, got a good deal on a warehouse deal around Black Friday. Was 1440p at 144Hz G-Sync before that. To be honest I couldn't go back to 60Hz and couldn't go back to not having G-Sync. I like Ultrawide but I could live without it.

What are the best g-sync IPS 1440p 144hz monitors on the market currently? When I was in the market around Aug 2016 I settled for 1440p 60hz U2715H from Dell.

Research had indicated a rake of panel problems with the 27 inch IPS 1440p Gsyncs from Asus/Acer.

None (or very little) at all, as far as I'm aware. The GPU just runs as it would pushing as many frames as it can*, the monitor the processes this and matches the refresh rate to frames so there is no tearing. Once you're above 60Hz you're gaming smoothly with no tearing or jutter.

*In nVidia settings you also cap the frame so that it doesn't go above the monitor refresh rate.

More expensive now then when i bought it. Has a small bit of light bleed but not noticeable in game. I think most of those panels are made in the same place.

I know there are perfectly fine panels out there from them but also a lot of dodgy ones.
I went with Dell S2716DG 27" 2560X1440 TN G-SYNC 144HZ .

IPS panels are overrated imo.
I have an LG 1440 IPS beside my Dell and there is little to no difference maybe 5% if anything.
I also got to see the TN and IPS versions side by side over in London a few weeks before i purchased and again the difference in colours is marginal.

Absolutely none, if anything its as if your running better hardware under the hood as it makes everything so smooth, honestly you havent gamed until you experience 144hz or above and gsync.
I was shocked at the difference when i got to experience it and atleast 6 of my RL friends have made the jump too after playing games on my monitor, for me its a real game changer.

I think i paid €570 inc shipping around late october or so, its pretty expensive right now alright, i meant to mention before i got the dell i had an AOC gsync 144hz 1080p monitor and it was great, id have no problem buying an AOC again.

1440P 144hz here as well, by far the best option, though personally I'd take 1440p60 over 1080p144 if that was the choice.

I had a 4K monitor for a while and it's a waste of time for gaming. Requires monster resources and doesn't visually look much better on a normal sized monitor (24-28").

Good for productivity and editing though.

That's my other monitor. Fantastic display. Great colours for a TN panel and no clouding, colour banding or other problems.

I went with 1080p 144Hz. Definitely couldn't go back to 60Hz.

A 1440p 144Hz with GSync is of course the sweet spot. They're just extremely expensive!

3440x1440@100hz is the sweet spot imo. Ultrawide+Hi-res+high framerate. I only get about ~80hz on most stuff at max settings tho with gtx1080ti. Why use high end monitor if you have to turn setting down?

Could not go back to normal 1440p after using ultrawide.

(for productivity tho I don't think ultra wide monitor is as good as having dual normal monitors)

1440p 100Hz for the last 5 years. Dont think id change for anything else. Resolutions above that require too much gpu power currently to make them good value imo.

If i won the lotto however....

my r9 390 is doing well and keeps me at about 60-80 with my freesync ultrawide on high but I do hope that the mining craze ends soon so I can max out this 1440p/100hz sucker

The AOC i have comes in a 24" 1440p with Gsync. 24" is more suited to 1080p really.

27" 1440p capable of 165Hz, but I limit it to 120Hz to avoid any tearing or desync issues when recording/streaming only 60fps.

After upgrading to it about 6 months ago, there's no way I'd be able to go back to normal refresh rates. Even the odd time I limited it to 60Hz is felt sluggish and slow just to move the mouse around 😝

Ultrawide is great for some games but quite a few don't support it, which really annoyed me.

I'm gaming at 27" 1440p 144Hz on a Freesync IPS monitor.

144Hz 1440p is the sweet spot at the minute. I was holding out for 4k HDR Freesync 2 this year but afaik there was none shown at CES.

Recently moved to 4k G Sync 144 and prefer "buttery smooth" 60 fps G Sync than 144 with FPS drops.

Can you not set at a cap at say 90Hz so it will still be smooth without the drops?

I'm AMD and you can do it in radeon settings so maybe Nvidia does not allow it but thinking about it they probably do.

Still rocking my 34inch ultrawide 3440x1440. When it comes to pc I cant go back to normal aspect ratio.

Its 60hz, but its fine for me. If I had extra money, then would add 144hz, but I would not swap ultrawide for 144hz.

It is there but I find 60 a grand number for now (1080 Gpu)

any recommendations for a 1440 monitor with 144hz refresh? Can i ask would a 24 inch 1080 or widescreen 1080 monitor with high refresh rate look as good as say a 144 hz 1440 monitor a 28 inch monitor? would want gsync aswell

a friend of mine reckons a 1080 24 inch 144hz is what i should be going for as a 1440 monitor stretched to 28 or 32 inches will look same as a 1080 monitor say 24 inch size....

Also, i see you have 400 to spend. I reckon you'd have to go down the second hand route if you want a 1440/144hz gsync monitor.
