Thinking back on my earlier post, it seems that Pavel may be in phone contact with support crew (they posted an update on his meeting with Enduro within minutes). Obviously, Enduro wasn't giving much away when they met, so Pavel may have thought he was retiring and eased off the pace.

However presumably he has now been similarly appraised of the fact the Enduro is out chasing him.
An unfortunate consequence of the need to carry comms equipment for safety I suppose, and the same feedback could be available to all competitors if they wish. A bit like the argument over race radios spoiling the tactical element of cycle racing.

I agree that the whole comms thing is contentious. In the past, people have made major navigational errors and lost hours. I imagine that if Pavel takes a wrong turn he'll be told about it pronto. Maybe likewise for Eoin.

Edit: Just to make a liar of me... Pavel seems to be following the waymarked PW route up Paddon Hill. The race route this year diverts to the West....

When Eoin left Bellingham for the second time the gap (according to race tracker) was 3.8 miles. About noon it was 3.5 miles. Now it's 3.0 miles.

I may be obsessing at this stage...

Noticed that and could it be a big mistake by Pavel.....He is either going to be penalized or its going to be a slower route.....

Looks that way. Pavel isn't moving much either. Small possibility they're being taken off the course for safety reasons.

Call it a draw so. :-)

Re-match next week, a la GAA. I'd buy a ticket!

Could be called off, conditions are supposedly really really bad and only suppose to get worse.

“I didn’t want to cause a safety problem.” Eoin Keith retires from the 2018 Montane Spine Race.

    Cancelled himself

    Savage effort in the conditions.
Good to know your limits and have respect for the safety of the rescue services.

Good luck to Pavel as he ploughs on!

Shame he had to drop out, great effort all the same. Good luck to Pavel, still a long way to go and apparently he doesn't have snow shoes.

Carol currently 2km from Greenhead CP, with at least a 35km lead over 2nd place woman who still has 10km to reach Alston CP.

Folks, looks like they've called a temporary halt. People being told to stay in the control point/rest area they have reached. Not clear the situation....

Even more unfortunate the timing of Eoin's withdrawal in that case. Hope everyone is safe.

Carol has just left the checkpoint though, is about 1km up the trail.
Maybe gone for a bag of chips/pint in the pub? :-)

Wondering did Eoin make a decision based on safety that should’ve been made by the organizers earlier in the day?

Well, it's a tough one, isn't it. Don't suppose they'd let him back in, no??

Yes a tough one and it would be hard to rule out Eoin’s retirement from the race not influencing the postponement decision....

Debriefing video with Enduro, 15 mins long. No regrets on the DNF decision.

Carol going strong and keeping a big lead on second lady.

Race leader Pavel Paloncy has received a three-hour time penalty for a mandatory kit discrepancy. Two hours and 45 minutes of it has been served. Fifteen minutes will be added to his time. #spinerace #britainsmostbrutal

She should be ok I guess with that lead but it looks like the lads have ditched her!! She may have a minor issue, but is now 600/750 metres behind them.

Nice video up of Carol passing quickly by Hut 2 - she was in great form, just gasping for water (lots of it round, just frozen).
She's currently 2km out from the Finish.

Glad its all over, I'm exhausted just watching! ;-)

Great scrap going on for the podium places amongst the women. English one is only a few hundred metres ahead of the Italian and the French woman another few hundred metres back in 4th spot. The English girl has 5 guys with her. (C'mon Ita!!!!)

Enduro is a class act to be fair. I see a clip of him presenting Pavel with his medal there at the end and he has a massive smile on his face. Jesus, I'd be gutted and feeling a bit hard done by I think.
