Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Well this one snuck up while we were all focused on the snow charts, I guess!

Looking at the AROME charts, Devon/Cornwall might actually be in for some fun of that nature

Fairly wild and gusty in Kerry already, massive hail and rain showers sweeping through, winds picking up all morning . Looks like 3 nights of broken sleep in a row coming up.

Some interesting points there from Liam Dutton, but a bit surprising he chose to use social media to show his exasperation.

Gust of 74 knots at Mace Head @4pm. So that is a gust to 137kph!
So Fionn going strictly by the Orange level wind warning = Storm naming was merited.

That's a red gust, over 130km per hour is it not?

Liam's twitter post was more than a little condescending towards 'our boys', hope someone tweets him back (if that's how it works?!) with that info.

Pardon my ignorance living so far away, but who is Liam?

He's a qualified UKMO weather forecaster, used to work with BBC weather but now works for Channel 4 News.

Thanks, more or less guessed right. I saw the earlier posts, just didn't know his association with Irish weather.

Well, I have the feeling that a red alert may be coming for Kerry, Limerick and Clare, possibly south Galway. M6 gusts above 65 knots are rare indeed. And recent gusts above 60 knots at Shannon also.

Will be borderline red for sure until at least midnight.

I am very interested in the next model run when they have the upper air data from Newfoundland and get a hold of the radar signature of the next storm, it really whipped across the Avalon at a high rate of speed. Currently the low appears to be around 150 miles east of St Johns NL.

The 12z upper air charts have quite the jet stream across the central Atlantic and it is unusually strong at 250 mb near Ireland now, a bit further south than we normally see this feature. This is probably translating down to produce Fionn out of what is essentially just a westerly flow.

I think this has brought the worst winds of the winter so far around here. Bushes etc round here (don't do trees very well) uprooted, fencing looking dodgy. Tried to go out to car a few minutes ago (it is in what I would class as in a sheltered spot) and had to give up. Liam Dutton can stick his opinions where the sun don't shine.

It is during events like this that Maq is missed from this forum. Seems to be gone for a couple of years now.

Have to suspect there are power outages in Kerry and possibly other areas because of lack of posts from regular contributors in those areas. Checking 18z reports to see how gusts are doing.

10 min avg winds of 45 km/h , gust 84 km/h ( readings from 7m approx ) here near Tralee. Lights flickering hope the electricity holds up. Massive wintry showers and even getting snow in the mix now.

Laughing at RoisinD's post, good on ye! Certainly a wicked night out there.

Some land stations saw slightly reduced gusts at 18z compared to 17z but the M6 buoy appears steady state at 64 knots this hour.

These fast flow windstorms are pretty much nowcasting situations as there's nothing much to track, the model guidance makes it appear that these strong winds should peak soon and diminish a bit by midnight, but I suspect that this energy will link up very rapidly with the next low and these very strong winds may only back off slightly before ramping up again tomorrow evening.

Missed most of last night's planned sleep (no particular reason, couldn't fall asleep) so having to down tools now, back when I can concentrate.

Fair play. A professional meteorologist who can't see the wind strengths meet criteria and then finishes with 'they'll be naming raindrops yet'. It's not much above Paddywhackery and made my blood boil.

Very rough weather up the esturary in West Limerick here since about 2pm. Power out in a few places around. Had pretty constant thunder and lightning for a couple of hours as well earlier. The Limerick to Listowel coast road(N69) is also impassible due to the large swell and high winds.

As a matter of interest I think the GFS and especially the WRF under called this and the ARPEGE, ECM and ICON did quite well.

Very Gusty here in West Clare. No damage visible though. The sudden Gusty periods followed by some quiet is what sets this apart from normal storms.

Yes the big gusts seem to be very convective in nature accompanied by hail / wintry mix.

ARPEGE has been a pretty reliable performer for the season in general.

As others have said, it's a very squally event. Bouts of intense gusts and hail/rain coming sideways but separated by lulls when it falls back to just a breeze.
