Oh how I would love to be that cat - chillaxed by the fire. Feckin freezing cold and I haven't been able to maintain a normal temperature over that last few days. One minute I'm boiling and the next shivering - some sort of a dirty dose of a virus. I woke up just after 3am this morning in a cold sweat and headed to the kitchen beside the range. Dosed off until 4.30 and woke up sweating. Headed back to bed and tossed and turned for the rest of the night.
Was in a hotel last night with my sister. Woke at 8.30 am. Latest I've been in bed in years. We went for breakfast at half 9 we were the only ones there ! This is a big hotel with golf course etc. Was very surprised

A few months ago Oh and I stayed overnight in the hotel after the wedding of a friends daughter. We drank and danced until the wee hours along with the Brides/Grooms parents and older relations, and headed to bed at 4ish.
Us auld ones met up in the dining room for breakfast from 8am and not a sign of the younger ones.

That's because most of us young ones are away from the kids for the night and get to get s lie in with no kids in the bed between us. Might even be more kids in the making😉 Breakfast is served until 10. Plenty of time for it.

Your nearly at the end of your stint handling clusters.
What's your plan from here. Are you going to head to Aus and go at the buildings.

Breakfast in this hotel was until 11. In restaurant last night. 3 tables eating. Must be very hard to keep going. We had a pigsback deal with meal and breakfast.

Got a start in chch, only 3 days left on the farm. Thought the boss was f#cking me around om the roster but i actually got an extra day off as i got all the jobs done a day early and it was pi$$in rain here too fairly sound of him to be fair. Would love to pack up and head across the ditch to oz, ill finish up my visa here and then head over. Might also get to travel to the north island to do the odd weeks work with who im working with here next so thats a good perk of the job too.

Anyone have any experience with ventilated sheeting on sheds? I'm looking to know if I ran a 1m strip of ventilation section within the sheets along the back and maybe sides of a lean to type shed would it feel breezy or can a breeze be felt through them? Thanks.

You mean for next year? Unfortunatly theres no 2nd year working holiday visa for irish lads, id need either a 1 or 3 year work permit to stay on which is a fair headach im told between medicals, paperwork and its pricey enough too.
Was in oz over new years place is booming so as long as it stays booming id imagine id be there.

No direct experience but see lots of comments saying they are a waste and timber lattes ventilation is better.

What's the best way to secure plastic water troughs? I have plenty of blocks but cant decide which way is best to build them

Has that changed recently? My sister and her bf were able to not long after the CHCH eartquake, though were qualified medic and building backgrounds.

Did you say you had turf dust under them this year ? Does it need cleaning often

We have them all along the back of one of our sheds and could'nt say that they let in a breeze at all . Even though it would be a newish shed I find it a bit worse for lice and few snots after putting cattle in .
This year the weather was very muggy when we had to put them in and they went in wet so I left the sliding doors open either end and tied two gates across instead to help with a bit of airflow . It made a huge difference and I have it left that way . They have much healthier coats and none of them had snots despite the weather after going in .
I think the spec for new sheds looks for a clear opening of around 300mm under the wallplates to allow the warm air out .
I know of two lads this year that had to take off every second sheet along the sides of the sheds to improve airflow after getting doses of pneumonia. (one lad lost 6 weanlings after housing and had a fair vet bill for call outs and treatmentof the rest aswell ) He actually got a lad in to cut a wider opening in the ridge to help aswell .

This could be worthy of a thread of its own actually , I wonder how much side sheeting is needed at all except to keep out driving rain maybe ?
Does a breeze do much harm to animals and would a roof with a generous overhang be good enough ?

Know of neighbours that had it, on south and west sides nice air flow and let rain in when it came with strong winds. On north and east sides no problems. Have space boarding myself and very happy with it.

Might have been a work permit they got or a short term extension of the cisa maybe? But irish citizens cannot get a 2nd year working holiday visa. You need a work permit or i have heard of special contractor visas that are just for 6 months to allow irish lads continue coning out for silage, but they tax tbe sh!t out of you on those.

We have them on the entire back of our shed, facing north. They let in a bit of air but get clogged very easily. Could do with a good powerwash every year.
Most years we leave the creep feeder at the sliding doorand chain the door open at it but this year we had too many weanlings to be able to use it so had no open door. Ended up with a bout of virus which we've not had in years.

In other words, they're just above useless in our eyes! We've wooden slatting facing south (though this does get a good blast off the lake) and it's far better. Still doesn't let in enough airflow for circulation though so we ten to leave the sliding door half/quarter open during the day and close it at night.

Another interesting thing I noticed was the cows never battered the gates when being fed which was what I was afraid would happen .
When we would be putting in silage at either end they would all tend to bunch up trying to get at the block of silage and they have the sliding doors well bet and bent but they never put pressure on the gate thats in the exact same place now ! Maybe its because they can see through it or something ?

Thanks all for the info. When we put up our last slatted shed we left a gap from wallplate down 800mm, it's covered with windbreak. Keeps out the heavy rain but a mist does sometimes blow through it and wets everywhere.
This shed I'm at now won't have cattle in it but I still want to have some sort of ventilation. On the other hand I don't want a lot of rain driving into it either. Would much come through an 800mm gap?

Yeah I have peat under them. They are on it since the 4th of Dec. Getting a little mucky now but I think ill get to stretch it for another 2 weeks. Add a small bit of straw every 4 or 5 days to stretch it but more really for them to mix it through the peat for the organic matter.

I suppose it depends on what way the rain is blowing most . I think a wider overhang / soffit will protect the building better from driving rain aswell .
An 800mm gap is big enough for someone to get through easily in case you have anything worth stealing in the new shed

i have them on a shed and its ideal...but the shed is on the side of the mountain and gets blasted with wind and rain.

I've wondered would staggering the sheeting help improve ventilation

Seems to have been a cover up which makes it worse.

The 800mm ventilation will be within the normal cladding. I think they press out the vents as it's formed. So security shouldn't be compromised unless I'm missing something?

Total waste of time better off with a gap in the roof sheeting if you can
