Lost a calf with fluid on the lungs.
Not a big calf but needed a pull.
When the shoulder was out allot fluid came out the mouth, everything appeared normal after calving (water on ears). Then calf started lunging & by time I realized & got heifer caught it was too late.
I’ve never come across this before & wouldn’t of expected after all the fluid coming out.
Is there any way of noticing earlier

We have wires crossed alright , I was talking about 300mm clear opening that meant there was no sheeting there at all .
The cladding or wall would only be going to within 300mm of the gutter roughly if you get my drift
I think you were talking about 800mm of space sheeting .

i have them on a shed and its ideal...but the shed is on the side of the mountain and gets blasted with wind and rain.

I've wondered would staggering the sheeting help improve ventilation

I suppose it depends on what way the rain is blowing most . I think a wider overhang / soffit will protect the building better from driving rain aswell .

Yeah I have peat under them. They are on it since the 4th of Dec. Getting a little mucky now but I think ill get to stretch it for another 2 weeks. Add a small bit of straw every 4 or 5 days to stretch it but more really for them to mix it through the peat for the organic matter.

Another interesting thing I noticed was the cows never battered the gates when being fed which was what I was afraid would happen .
When we would be putting in silage at either end they would all tend to bunch up trying to get at the block of silage and they have the sliding doors well bet and bent but they never put pressure on the gate thats in the exact same place now ! Maybe its because they can see through it or something ?

We have them on the entire back of our shed, facing north.They let in a bit of air but get clogged very easily. Could do with a good powerwash every year.
Most years we leave the creep feeder at the sliding doorand chain the door open at it but this year we had too many weanlings to be able to use it so had no open door. Ended up with a bout of virus which we've not had in years. :rolleyes:

In other words, they're just above useless in our eyes! We've wooden slatting facing south (though this does get a good blast off the lake) and it's far better. Still doesn't let in enough airflow for circulation though so we ten to leave the sliding door half/quarter open during the day and close it at night.

Might have been a work permit they got or a short term extension of the cisa maybe? But irish citizens cannot get a 2nd year working holiday visa. You need a work permit or i have heard of special contractor visas that are just for 6 months to allow irish lads continue coning out for silage, but they tax tbe sh!t out of you on those.

Know of neighbours that had it, on south and west sides nice air flow and let rain in when it came with strong winds. On north and east sides no problems. Have space boarding myself and very happy with it.

We have them all along the back of one of our sheds and could'nt say that they let in a breeze at all . Even though it would be a newish shed I find it a bit worse for lice and few snots after putting cattle in .
This year the weather was very muggy when we had to put them in and they went in wet so I left the sliding doors open either end and tied two gates across instead to help with a bit of airflow . It made a huge difference and I have it left that way . They have much healthier coats and none of them had snots despite the weather after going in .
I think the spec for new sheds looks for a clear opening of around 300mm under the wallplates to allow the warm air out .
I know of two lads this year that had to take off every second sheet along the sides of the sheds to improve airflow after getting doses of pneumonia. (one lad lost 6 weanlings after housing and had a fair vet bill for call outs and treatmentof the rest aswell ) He actually got a lad in to cut a wider opening in the ridge to help aswell .

This could be worthy of a thread of its own actually , I wonder how much side sheeting is needed at all except to keep out driving rain maybe ?
Does a breeze do much harm to animals and would a roof with a generous overhang be good enough ?

No direct experience but see lots of comments saying they are a waste and timber lattes ventilation is better.
