New build and advice please

    Hi I previously had a fairly high end rig with a 1080 gpu....

    short story I was sinking in more than I could afford for max performance and I exited stage left as needed a laptop for college.

    So I wanna build a 1920*1080 build and im out of the loop with intel and ryzen or what gpu would be best....

    i have a 4k monitor peripheral wise and thats about that... used parts not a problem but what would you lads suggest and what kinda money would I be looking at?

    was considering a gaming laptop aswell but what do you lads think?

    Mid-range: Ryzen 1600

    High-refresh/PUBG: Intel i5-8400/8600K/8700K

    GPU: GTX 1060 6Gb/RX580 < used 980Ti/new 1070 < GTX 1080

    1080p gaming is a very vague statement; if you're only looking for 1080p @ 60Hz, you can build a machine for 650-800.
    1080p @ 75Hz, around 900; 1080p @ 144Hz, you're looking at 1100-1200.

    Also, GPU, SSD & RAM markets are pretty FUBAR right now (prices have gone to hell).

    Ryzen refresh is due in a month.

    I don't recommend gaming laptops for main gaming machines, since they leave you with no clear upgrade path & their thermals are generally dire.

    Ryzen 1600 all day long but see what the refresh brings. Ideally I would say pair it with a GTX1070 but they are hard to recommend given the comparative price with the 1080.

    What's the budget?

    How will the 4K look at 1080p?

    1080p is half 4K so the monitor will be fine.

    It's actually 1/4

    4K: 3840x2160 = 8'294'400 pixels
    1080p: 1920x1080 = 2'073'600 pixels

    I'm pretty certain it doesn't work that way ;)

    1440p is closer to 1/2 of 4K resolution.

    Hard to know without the budget. For any hope of decent 4K gameplay you would need a GTX1070 for 4k medium settings at a reliable 60fps. Ryzen 1600 is a good shout though to start.

    Generally speaking though for a 1080p build, at this point a Ryzen 1600 + GTX1060 6GB is a solid path, though new Ryzen CPU's are coming shortly.
