Are you sure your not misdiagnosing the issue??and for want of a better phrase throwing baby out with bathwater

    >>it should be said at this point...I'm not pushed either way wheter chats stay or go to another forum....but do you run risk of making those who prefer chats and talking sh1te feel unwelcome??(let's face it...nothing important is ever going to come of here)...

I would absolutely agree with that and in fact I felt you were very unfairly treated on a thread here a few months ago. That's not the kind of forum I want to be a part of. The chatty threads are the complete opposite of being rounded upon and belittled.

    The very opposite you say?

The above is from your Where Are You Now thread, of course you should recognise the post; you did thank it along with the other couple of posters who have posted in this thread.

Rounded upon? Yes. Belittled? Yes. Abusive? Yes.

It's not something that occurs often in my opinion but, that's hilarious.

That poster was frustrated and annoyed because they felt the last bit of good was being torn from the place. The choice of words however were unwise. I still stand by my beliefs.

I think the site should be renamed "mods" instead of boards because they take down posts that go against their narrow mindset. There are plenty of people who have come here to voice their opinion only to have a mod remove it for not agreeing to it. I for one don't bother posting anything much because it will probably be removed. This is probably the true cause of decline.

In my experience it's extremely rare for a post to be removed. If they are it's because they're very offensive so maybe you need to think about what you're posting and why it's so offensive that it's removed?

If you want to get picky Dougal I'm sure I can trawl through some other threads here where people are less than respectful towards each other. In fact if I remember correctly one poster started a thread in Feedback because they felt they didn't have a voice on a particular abortion thread. One of the many that tends to clutter up the pages. Then there was that time a different poster was ganged up on for his lifestyle choices. But anyway sure we'll let that all go.

I have said my piece on this now. Time to get back to work.

Same here, can't be bothered anymore. If you don't hate Joe with the same level of hatred as you have towards Bin Laden then you're out.

Examples of the above. From a very cursory glance, the poster you quoted (dx2005) said something abusive towards another poster using funny spelling or something like that, was warned, and then in the next liveline thread, used the same spelling to take the piss again, and was asked not to post again.

I obviously dont know if there is further background to that exchange beyond the two threads i took a look at to inform myself somewhat, but that seems like a prime example of posters disregarding the charter and mod warnings in OPs for chat threads, rather than 'overmodding' or 'clique behaviour' or whatever it is yourself and dx were saying was bad/tiresome.

Is that post still there? I can't see it. TBH I rarely post in that thread, I'm a trivially annoyed girl for life- but I think that quote is an unfair representation and does an injustice to the kind of spirit that thread usually beholds. You'll find one off salty posts anywhere.

I much prefer the chat threads on the front page of AH as these are essentially the last glimmer of community that people speak of when they talk about what AH used to be like.
Light-heart, fun, jokey and folk have come together on them for a number of things. And most importantly, they are open for regulars, drop ins, newbies and everything in between.

So shunting the old AH into a subforum and giving more room on the front page for threads where people are not discussing but just posting the same rhetoric on immigration, religion, travellers, etc. is not the answer.

Reducing the number of Stickies is something that we can definitely look at though to free up more real estate.

I do also predominantly use the touch site...at the min....just 1 of the mallinigned threads is on the front page like

I just think it's severly naive to point at those for the decline....it's too cumbersome and too many forums (and ye want another for chat :pac: )

Like yesterday....there a popular enough programme I watch regularly due starting back soon....took 3 attempts on the search function going into 4 separate but similar forums, before I gave up and found what i wanted first go on reddit.....life's too short like

Forum request isn't going to get close to the numbers of +1s it needs anyway so people should relax and enjoy their chat threads where they currently are.

I doubt there is a conspiracy going that a group of posters PM each other that the thread is gone off the front page and whos turn is it it post again to fire it back up to the first page.

Perhaps they post in it because they enjoy posting in it and reading others comments in it. The simplest explanation is probably the best one.

The old AH never allowed chat threads, it was part of the Charter. FlirtTar was created to cater for the chatty threads. Even this round of threads initially started off with a No Chat rule, then someone jokingly changed it to No Hats, and when V2/3 came around, the No Chat rule was forgotten about.

The banter of AH will still exist without the chat threads, it has done for many, many years. Andy’s coffee thread is a recent example of that.

I'm curious as to why you carried out such a detailed investigation? Can you tell me why? Maybe I've wandered into a personal thing between you and DX?

But anyhow, I don't have time to go back and find some specific examples but in general there are several posts a day that say "are you new here?", and several hundred probably a week that remind us that "Joe earns 400k". Despite the forum charter saying that personal insults should not be used the host of the show is called "fateen". I could go on and on but it just sickens me to even think about the level of hatred that goes on in there. It's why I don't even read it anymore.

Anyone who disagrees with the general consensus is "invited" to leave the thread. Hence the echo chamber they've created which is "great craic" altogether with the same posts day in, day out.

Actually, strange you should mention the funny spelling subject. That ****e would not be allowed in any other forum but it's consistent in there. Apparently it's hilarious but very hard to read.

Spot on, I have often noticed that there could be hours between posts, I've often just popped in to get an update out how certain people are getting with certain issues in their lives be it personal or health or family. I've popped in and had a read and then left again without posting.

Absolutely. And also, the quality of these light hearted threads are totally in the hands of the community that post in them. So, if someone doesn't like them, then create one you do like and see how successful it is.

I don't see how in God's name you find the chat threads hostile and belittling and Andy's thread banter seeing as it's 200 posts of everyone absolutely piling on him.

I thought it was funny and he's well able for it God love him but what's the difference?

Nope not at all. First time I have been into those threads and I don't go near the radio forum much either. Not really detailed tbf. I looked at the guys posts in the more recent threads and the mod posts around them. Took about 3 minutes.

Are they invited to leave for their views or their behaviour. This was why I asked for examples because I think posters who are asked to leave can get confused about the difference between the two.

Can I ask you- what do you want AH to be, in terms of a forum? Are you not going down the road of lots more rules and regulations, which is something that will stifle what's meant to be "social and fun".?

A lot of private forums have these type of threads as it keeps a level of lightheartedness balance to other more serious and rule based discussion threads.

If a social forum such as AH doesn't have a "release valve" the tension can quickly escalate in that forum. From my position, I really don't see the problem of ignoring threads you don't want to post in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,260 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

As a rule I dislike general chat threads as they do indeed generally reduce to the same small number of people posting back and forth to each other, and any other contributions are lost in the mix or rounded on by the group if the opinion expressed doesn't fit the "tone".

It also tends to end up that the chat spills over into other threads as the same group tends to follow each other and continue their closed discussions or arguments elsewhere.

If chat threads MUST be a thing, I'm all for them being condensed and hived off to a sub forum. The only objections to that could be from those posters who want (their efforts) to be seen IMO.

If you read my earlier post from today you’ll see where I quoted a poster in one on the chat threads calling posters in this thread with an opposing view ‘****’. That’s pretty hostile, but it’s not the main issue.

I suppose the main difference is the type between Andy’s thread and the chat thread is that Andy’s is a proper discussion thread, good craic, and everyone joins in and it will eventually run its course. The chat threads cater for a minority, cliquey, take up a lot of real estate on the front page, and are not what AH is about.

AH is banter, pop in and fast moving, easy to join in on a thread. I agree that the dole/terrorist/Muslim threads can be jading, but there are some diamonds in there too.

    I'm not cliquey......

Who are you to decide what AH is about?

I'm going to edit this, you've given your opinion on what you think AH is about, I should respect that. I dont agree with it but I respevt it.

You can't have it both ways Dougal. The thread on the 8th amendment is on the front page since last April and we could argue it belongs somewhere more specialist than AH. It's hardly a chatty thread and is dominated by a few posters.

And picking one idiotic post from a thread doesn't make a case.
