You see what you did, Louis Walsh?

    Well said, Mr. Chevron (RIP)!

If I recall it right the first bit of this is good, most of the crew got thrown in Prison the night they filmed the video and they only got out because the NYPD officer in charge was starstruck when Matt Dillon put in a word for them.

Also, the musicians posing as the NYPD had never heard of Galway Bay so they mimed to the Mickey Mouse Club theme.

Should be interesting to compare this with RTE’s forthcoming documentary about ‘Fairytale’ - providing I can view it.

A local iPlayer for local people :D

Shane tells a story about that. He and the director wanted Dillon to throw Shane hard against the wall but Matt was such a huge admirer of Shane he couldn't do it because he didn't want to hurt him.

If someone in these Brexit talks could fix it so we could see the Iplayer and the UK people could see all the wonders of the RTE Player, what a wonderful world this would be.

Love it, and all the stories you've shared about Shane.

I don't know yet. I think I'll be busy with something else that week. If I go to Dublin on the Monday I mightn't surface again till at least Thursday.

He's having a private thing in Nenagh after xmas. I'd rather go to ythat and see my some of my own family in the process. Nothing concrete.

Good documentary, strange how the BBC decided not to show ‘Saturday Night Fever’ straight after though.

Just watching the TOTP disco special atm. F me sideways. There was an awful amount of pure crap in there. I previously had a friendly mini-pop at Oldrio over a statement about 'Disco having a special place in hell' or something.

I can see where that came from. Problem was that every weirdo tried to get on the quality disco bandwagon and dragged the whole thing into the mire. HTF could Chic and The weather girls be classed in the same genre ?

Good point, and also - why didn't they shuffle the schedule so that a documentary about Saturday Night Fever could be broadcast on a Saturday Night, not Friday?

You see, this is kinda what I was trying to explain (badly). Imo, ya just can't shoot down a whole genre. It was born out of funk so therefore it has a good pedigree. I agree it became progressively crap as time went on as the aforementioned bandwagon jumpers got on board and destroyed it.

Groups like Chic were at the top. It's just a pity so many tools hopped in and were let hop in, for a quick buck.

Earth wind and fire could presumably be in the hated disco genre too, but a quick look at wiki shows their genres as:-
    "Genres-
R&B soul funk disco pop rock blues jazz psychedelia".

Not bad on the CV eh.

Personally I think they were a brilliant band of extremely talented song writers and musicians.
My personal tastes are all over the place tbh but with one thing in common - all good songs ! (subjectively)

Anyway, as you were everybody :D

    Merry Christmas y'all. :D:D:):)

I see we're now little more than 80 posts away from 10,000. Will we get there before 2018, I wonder...? :D:D;);)

The answer would almost certainly be yes if it hadn't been for two more TOTP '84 episodes that weren't shown - those of 21 June and 13 December respectively. These weren't Yewtreed or Smithed, but did feature a certain G Glitter - and obviously the Beeb felt that editing out the potentially offending performances was too much trouble.

And now, of course, we won't be getting every episode from 1985 - nor will we be getting every episode from 1986 and 1987.

It really is a shame, isn't it? Everyone was looking forward to reaching '85 and no longer having to worry about episodes being skipped because of the presence of Savile or DLT, or indeed Glitter - and then the revelation regarding Smitty... :(

What's more, he increases his appearances on the show at this point - no less than 48 episodes between '85 and '87 can't be shown. And during these three years, there are a few periods where he presents every second week, as well as four consecutive weeks in autumn '87 where he co-presents with Gary Davies...

And if we make it to 1988, there'll be four banned episodes from that year too. 31 March '88 is his last episode, for the record.

Anyway, before I turn into Scrooge, a few words regarding the continuation thread. :D Fair to say that it'll have to be called something other than "BeebRock", especially with all the programmes that Sky Arts is churning out - but, of course, it'll still have to be called something catchy. "Never Mind the Boardsies", perhaps? No, wait - that's probably not distinctive enough... :D:D;)

    Christmas Day (Monday)
12.20pm Top Of The Pops Christmas 2017 (BBC1) New!
Fearne Cotton and Clara Amfo present Top of the Pops Christmas 2017 with Ed Sheeran, Clean Bandit, Dua Lipa, The Script and lots of others you've probably never heard of.

This was to have been the fourteenth consecutive Christmas TOTP with Reggie Yates hosting alongside Fearne - before he said things that, er, he shouldn't have said.

So instead, Clara's the first new host since the regular show ended - unless of course you count the 2009 Comic Relief special, in which Fearne and Reggie were joined by Noel Fielding. :D

    hqdefault.jpg

It is, however, the fourth consecutive Xmas Pops at Elstree Film Studios. Obviously, the Beeb felt that they couldn't have both this *and* Sounds Like Friday Night at Television Centre.

Look out for a slightly older studio audience than usual - at least according to Nick Gates, AKA Brig Bother... :D;)

Here's Imelda on Jools's New Years Eve show last year, before she went off to do her own version this year. Or maybe she'll be on it again through the wonders of everything being pre-recorded weeks in advance!

Thanks Skid for keeping everyone so brilliantly informed.

9.30pm The Late Late Show - Dubliners Tribute 30 Years On (RTE1) Not New, But Might Be Worth Taping

The audio on the current youtube upload is pretty bad and aside from Charley Haughey getting a standing ovation and Jim McCann it was an outstanding piece of television that transforms me back to being a child unwittingly absorbing traditional music.

Channel 4 - Prince: Last Year of a Legend
This documentary goes behind Prince's public persona to reveal a man hitting a new creative peak both as an artist and activist during the year leading up to his tragic death.
    Tue Jan 2 22:00 - 23:00

Looking forward to Dave Wakeling and The Beat on Hootenanny, wonder if he'll be with his US touring band ('The English Beat') or the UK touring band with Ranking Roger, hoping it's the latter.

    I'm partial to your abracadabra
I'm raptured by the joy of it all

Just watched the Oasis documentary - freaky how much Liam looks the spitting image of his Dad.

I see we're now little more than 80 posts away from 10,000. Will we get there before 2018, I wonder...?

Not quite. :o:D;) As I said, we might have done so had it not been for those Glittered TOTP '84 episodes...

I have to admit, this year's Hootenanny line-up doesn't look *quite* as exciting as last year's. :o:o This time twelve months ago, we were all looking forward to ABC, Chaka Khan, Roy Wood and UB40, as well of course as Imelda and her then-new look. :D;) And when it was over, we had also been greatly impressed by Gregory Porter, Seasick Steve, Rag 'n' Bone Man and Christine and the Queens. :):)

But this year, Ed Sheeran is top of the bill. There's absolutely no denying that he's a good singer-songwriter, that he seems a nice lad and that he's had so much success in 2017 - but I just can't bring myself to warm to his music. Maybe in the future, but not at present. :o:o

There doesn't seem to be as much variety as usual, either. Mavis Staples and George McCrae are both 70-something American singers with soul as one of their genres, while José Feliciano is also in his 70s and from the Americas. Beth Ditto is also American, and will perform a classic soul cover, while it should be obvious what Soul II Soul's main genre is. Every one of these acts is pretty darn good, of course - but, IMHO, it's even better when there's a great deal of variety, just as there was last year... :o:o

I'll still watch, of course. Nile Rodgers can do his best, but nothing beats Jools, Ruby Turner and, of course (why do I keep saying that?), the Pipes and Drums of the Scots Guards... :D;)

    Merry Christmas y'all. :D:D:):)

Not sure I want to know, but what are the Smith revelations?

Hopefully Dave Wakeling can lift the show with a few Beat numbers.

No accusations have been made against him - he just didn't want his episodes to be repeated, and the BBC have continued to respect his wish.

New Year's Resolution for 2018 - read Skid's posts on this thread for advance notice of good stuff incoming...

I happened upon the last 10 minutes of the Freddie Mercury programme the other night, am raging I missed it!

Can't get excited by either Imelda May's line-up tonight, nor Jools Holland's - although the epic hangover from last night might have something to do with that...... Think I'll record Jools just in case (FOMO and all that!)

At least it's not Nathan Carter.

I think Jools needs to throw in a curveball and have Cannibal Corpse on at midnight :)
