My wife and I pulled out of a trip to New York this morning for NYE. This was a surprise anniversary present for my wife but she was too sick to travel this morning. She always wanted to go to New York at Christmas/New Year's Eve time.
The hotel we booked was very understanding and gave us full credit on the original cost that can be used within a year. We also booked a helicopter ride and they were understanding and refunded us in full.
We want to go next year at the very end of November or start of December when all the Christmas lights will be on. Rather than cancel the flight and rebook I rescheduled the flight for as late as I could next year - 16 November for €440. You can only book flights 330 days in advance so I was unable to reschedule 2 weeks later.
If I explained the situation to Aer Lingus do you think they would let me reschedule the flights again for no extra charge - I paid €990 for the initial flights and €440 for the extra rescheduling charge.

I've had aer Lingus wave fees for a bunch of stuff in the past. It's worth a try as you've already paid the outrageous 440 free already. They can only say no.
