If it was a case where you wanted to keep playing at the top level to better yourself then it wouldn't be so odd but he will play fook all games with Mitchels while he is involved with the county team so it makes no odds where he plays his club football. The new Mitchels manager must already be in-place as I cant see a county player agreeing to join without knowing who the gaffer is.

Look I'm sure there's stuff going on behind the scenes but Ballinrobe made him the player he is. You can't choose your club and all that... If you want silverwear go out and win an intermediate county title next Autumn with the lads you grew up with

Lets call a spade a spade here, if this was in Dublin there'd be absolute uproar. I know of a player in galway a few years back who actually lived in Dublin and joined a top team up there and was pretty much ostracised back home. That's how much club means to a lot of people

Made him the player he is, nice soundbite but not really true is it? If that was the case then why don't they have 15 donal vaughans?
From the outside it seems odd, but the devil is always in the detail in these things. He has opened a shop there, it makes sense for his business for him to become a fully fledged castlebar man. He also seems to be settled there.

If a guy has moved to a new place, opened a business there, bought a house etc, then truth be told he is within his right to play football in that area. In reality if he wasn't a county player or if he was moving to an unsuccessful club, people wouldn't be paying this much heed.

As for your point about it happening in Dublin - Eamon Fennell? Wasn't it a case that he hadn't even moved, just decided to change club? I don't hear many choruses of boos when he is playing for vincents...

LOL what are you on about the Eamonn Fennell thing was massive at the time that's exactly my whole point!

Of course his club made him who he is ffs, how else would he have developed into an inter-county footballer, kicking it off his gable wall at home?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 513 ✭✭✭boosabum

I would wonder if there is any real impact on what the club status of an established inter county player is anymore.
Essentially, any player who is generally in the 26 man match day squad will play very little club football all year.
Maybe this year, a few league games in April for the club but outside of this it's probably only the few championship games.
I'm sure Castlebar aren't complaining but Ballinrobe have lost a figure head when they really needed one post relegation

It was a big press story because the transfer got rejected by club and CB. As there would be if the same happened with Vaughan. But that isn't 'absolute uproar' within the county. Once it went ahead he has been left alone the same as any other player.
It is probably a bad comparison because Vaughan does seem to have reasonably genuine reasons to move clubs, whereas you cant really see any for Fennell.

Listen, any player gets the best out of themselves. It's not like if he had moved to say balintubber instead of balinrobe, he wouldn't be any good of a player is it? He served balinrobe well in his time, being their main sponsor. Peopple should cut him a bit of slack I believe

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,930 ✭✭✭jr86

Ah here of course people will give him 'slack', and I've no doubt he was fully expecting same - it's a very controversial decision whatever way you want to dress it

Anyhow I've made my thoughts on it known at this stage. Best of luck to him in a Mayo jersey from now on ;)

Fennell transferred out as O'Tooles was a hurling club. They played football but done little training for football. Don't blame him for that but wouldn't be happy with the way he went about transfer as Vincents wasn't his first choice

Vaughan Shoes have several outlets, I'm not sure Castlebar folk will rush to the Store because he signed for them. I would image they would be easily outnumbered by Ballinrobe folk snubbing that store.

It's all well and good trying to justify it by saying he has set up house, business etc in a new area... but when the old area is 20 odd minutes away, it's a bit of a joke.

I don't know the details of what exactly happened but on the face of it, it's a worrying move. But it's not surprising, County players in the top Counties aren't really Club players anymore. We're creating Super Counties and I can see it getting to the stage (like the Rugby Provinces) where Club isn't played except by those on the fringe of a County set-up.

I thought it was too when I seen it initially, but the more I thought about it, the more I figured it wasn't just a guy chasing glory. Id imagine his new business in the town was a factor in the move and I don't blame him for that. At the end of the day, if a guy is running a business in a place, and lives in a place, he'd have a fairly reasonable claim to play football in the place. I mean, didn't he move into balinrobe when he was young anyway? Cant he have moved to castlebar now in the same fashion? I know you are not really arguing with me, but I'm just making the point, it isn't as bad as it seems at first glance.

I get what you are saying but I'm not sure the facts stack up tbh - O'Tooles are a D2 team... Paul Flynn's Fingallians and Cluxton's Parnells are D3... To say D2 teams don't train or take the thing seriously is a bit of a stretch in fairness...

They do but surely it doesn't take a genius to see that the one in castlebar would be seen as the one that is going to be their flagship store? As for rushing to his store tomorrow, no probably not. But if he adds something to the team and they maybe get to another all Ireland down the line, as well as any bit of sponsorship he might send their way, he will be seen as one of their own rather than a guy from the neighbouring parish. It is naïve not to recognise the potential that has for a business in the future as regards goodwill etc. Plus, he has genuinely moved to the area, it is perfectly within his remit to move to the club... He isn't trying to flout a rule or something like that.

I suppose it is a bit like the nationalised guys playing rugby for Ireland in the sense that some people don't really like it, but they aren't actually doing anything wrong either.

Agree O'Tooles made him but they are dual but predominantly a hurling club. They have never strayed from bottom 6 in D2 over the 20 years. Might have played a year or 2 in D3. Now days unfortunately players play little with their clubs so they can't use excuse they need to join a "bigger club" to enhance their chances playing for their county.

"The Gimp" nickname they christened him with must've been starting to grate!

The moving life to Castlebar excuse doesn't wash anyway. It's not like he's training with them or playing league matches, he only has to go back for the odd championship game and even then it's a tiny distance. Something might come to light, but for now it reflects poorly on him

When Fennell was in limbo all over the media trying to force his move - O'Tooles went from Division 3 to 2 to 1 . They then stayed up in Division 1 .

They also reached the last 16 of the Dublin football championship

Well I don't agree that O'Tooles made him, no more than Man Utd made C Ronaldo, but anyway.
To suggest an intermediate team who are able to reach division 2 and compete, even at the lower end of the table in the Dublin football championship, don't train or take the thin seriously, is frankly ludicrous. I'm not trying to have a go at Fennell, I'm simply pointing out, this thing you are pushing about the team being basically a social team who don't lift a leg outside turning up to games, doesn't hold stand up when the facts are looked at.

Well sorry but that is exactly why transfer were brought in in the first place. A guy moves his life to a different place he can move. If as you say there was friction between him and some former teammates then it only explains further why he might decide to move on.

Point where I said were a social team?? Hurling is their priority and football comes second so majority of training would be hurling. They have 7/8 players that played with Dublin hurlers and it was them players that ensured O'Tooles their senior status.

It's his life. Fair play to him for doing what he wants to do n not what other people expect him to do.
Wonder what The begrudgers will have to say next year if he helps them make that last step.

I can understand someone not having an issue with what he's done, or simply not caring. But putting a positive on it? "Fair Play to him", as if dumping your hometown club as soon as they get relegated and moving to the big boys up the road should be something every player in that situation should aspire to

Donal Vaughan by all accounts has firm roots in Castlebar now,it's the place of his primary business. He lives in Castlebar and by all accounts is dating a lady from the area long term. It's a non issue,he has a responsibility to look after his own personal interests, nothing particularly selfish about that.

The timing may appear off but I was surprised he did not make the move sooner. There were rumours re such a move previous to this.

The issue here is that he left his home club for the county champions to personnel glory when it obviously wasn't for commute reasons.

I think it would be a much better argument if there was a longer drive between the clubs.

Who knows why he moved it could be for the county set up, maybe he never liked his home club, having roots up the road in your own county doesn't sit well though imo. It's just not enough of a geographical change to justify it.

One thing is for sure, it's his business and if a player wants to go a club should let them off IMO, good luck to him.

Also this might be another plus for the Kerry set up , where you can be involved with two set ups at differing levels.

There is an undercurrent of something here and I can't quite out my finger on it............either way it's another negative mayo story for the papers to get over Xmas with :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,952 ✭✭✭✭Stoner

Mayo being in the spotlight are just "fair game " by the media. There's little else happening at the moment and people want to talk about something.

At the end of the day this situation has happened 100's of times all over the country.
There are many potential standard rumours to draw from that traditionally get traction.

He had a row at the club
    He is getting paid
County management told him he wouldn't get his game playing at intermediate level
He's messing around in the club and had to leave.

It's silly season, it will all pass. Those guys will twist anything. I agree though, whatever they settle on it won't be positive.

You can look at this from his eyes or the clubs eyes. This has been mooted for sometime. I know some in Ballinrobe were not happy with the amount of games he missed. This may have been the extra push he needed. I know of one game where Mcloughlin played for Knockmore and Vaughan sat it out. There was a county game coming up. Mcloughlin ran riot.

He is within his right to do what he wants but there is a bad undercurrent to this as the spin is just 15 minutes. If it was just some ordinary guy, there wouldn't be a word on this but he is a county player who Ballinrobe badly need, but he pulled plant.
While he has served his own needs, I think he has kicked Ballinrobe. I don't think this has helped his PR either but it will be all over come january.

You stated that their footballers play the games but actually do little training. The only teams that just tog out for the games and dont really bother training are, in my experience, social teams knocking about in junior B, whose manager will have to tog himself out at full forward, complete with jeans and a pair of trainers at least once a season...

Nothing wrong with those teams by the way, however we have since learned that this team are in fact a division 2 team who operate at intermediate. So the suggestion that they dont really train, is to put it mildly, obviously not accurate.

That is the thing here, it has been mooted for a while but it never happened til now... In all likelihood, he probably did stay a couple of seasons more than he wanted to, out of loyalty - the very loyalty that every tom dick and harry with half a passing interest are now claiming he now doesnt have, after reading a 10 sentence article on it, written by someone with half a story and an over-riding interest in getting lots of clicks - the depressing reality of how 'news' works these days.
