    After the devastating Hurricane Harvey a few months back, the southern United States are being hit by Winter Storm Benji. This brought a rare dumping of snow to southern Texas, especially for December. Officials were optimistic that warm road temperatures would minimise the impacts of Winter Storm Benji. However, school districts opening were delayed due to road conditions. Thundersnow was reported here as well as in Louisiana. Snow began to fall then to the eastern side of these states. More than 150,000 homes in Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi lost power this morning due to the snow.

    Winter Storm Benji is now spreading snow to much of the Northeast Seaboard, after blanketing a swath of the South with record-setting snowfall.

    By the time Benji departs the Northeast, it will have laid down a blanket of snow 2,000 miles long from Texas to New England.

    Already over 400,000 customers have lost power in the storm and roads remain treacherous in parts of the South.

    An expansive area of snow is now spreading into the Northeast and finally leaving the snow-weary Southeast.

    Snow is now falling throughout the Washington D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia and Boston metro areas, and will continue to spread north and gain intensity through the day.

    Already, up to 3 inches of snow has been reported in Cape May, New Jersey and up to 7 inches of snow has accumulated in Harbeson, Delaware, and Salisbury, Maryland.

    Snow continues in parts of Virginia and the western Carolinas. Meadows of Dan, Virginia has already picked up 6 inches of snow, and one inch was reported at Richmond.

    Over 10 inches of snow have blanketed the mountains of western North Carolina, topped by an estimated 18 inches near Cashiers. Over 8 inches has piled up in Asheville and just under 2 inches has been recorded in Greenville-Spartanburg, South Carolina.

    Much of the north and northwest sides of the Atlanta metro area picked up 5 to as much as 10 inches of snow. Sky Valley, Georgia, measured 13 inches of snow early Saturday morning.

    Overnight, accumulating snow was witnessed in Pensacola, Florida, and flurries were reported early Saturday morning in several other western Florida panhandle locations, including Destin.

    At the moment it is The Weather Channel names winter storms such as Benjii. I don't think that The National Weather Service of America officially name such storms.
