I am a member of a supporters group in London and the English lads get the odd comment, England v Scotland stuff but nothing over the top. There is an active supporters club here in Dublin, called Dublin Loyal, fyi.

Irish people are strange when it comes to football clubs. Liverpool FC have strong Protestant links, the club was founded by an Orangeman, the home end is called the KOP (King Over Pope), yet people here support them avidly.

Isn’t the Kop end in liverpool named after the Spion Kop?

Yep, there's Kops in numerous grounds too. Bradford and Sheffield Wednesday both have one, Coventry's old ground Highfield Road had one.

    Think there's plenty of others.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

City guide told us that people argue over the naming but the former is probably correct, given the heritage of the club, from the best of his knowledge. Some favour the Spion Kop because it is more marketable for a club of that status. He also told us about Houlding who founded the club. He was a senior man in the OO and the free masons but they just say that he was the former Lord Mayor of the city nowadays. Everton is a very Irish and RC club.

Interesting post thank-you. How did you come to choose Rangers as a team whilst also being Irish? Also, would you say the sectarianism is over inflated by the media or are you careful who you mix with at matches?

Wrexham have a Kop too but it is not used anymore as it was never developed from terrace to seats. It stands there quite derelict now. Shame as it was a good ground for a club of its size.

A big negative reaction on the Rangers forums to the prospect of Tony Docherty coming in as assistant. Apparently he's a taig, a tarrier etc. It's absolutely bizarre.

No it’s the fact he is a tic fan who has previous for singing certain songs. Personally I couldn’t give a monkeys as long as he does his job. Many others feel the same. How weird spending time on Rangers forums

So why the continuos and multiple references to taig, tarrier etc? I've no idea about the guy in question, but there's numerous examples of fans of one club becoming legends at rivals; Busby (ex Lverpool player), Stein, Dalglish, Carragher, Fowler etc.

I'm interested in football and so read plenty of forums of various clubs. Quiet ironic how someone using a football forum would slate someone else for using a football forum.

I don't know the guy, so no idea of his political views.

Is it a fact that he's an outspoken republican based on evidence, or is it a fact based on him having a "taig" sounding name? Evidence please if the former.

I have already said I don’t care what he is or do any so if you really want to play games find the evidence yourself

No point in going around in circles with this. For clarity though, I certainly wasn't suggesting you were judging him along those terms

I'm not Irish. My family are Rangers through and through, so supporting the team came naturally to me. As I said in my previous post, I've never felt the need to be overly careful. If I came across someone who had the potential to cause trouble, I'd steer clear of them but I'd behave like that in everyday life anyway.

Nope, more to do with his actions in the past. I'm happy enough to look past that and see how he performs as assistant. Think I said it on here before but I am not overly bothered where a person comes from once they act in the best interests of Rangers FC.

But Everton and Liverpool were founded by the same people so how can this be the case ?

Was thinking that too and I read up on it after that visit. Here is an interest piece on that divide.

Rangers approached Aberdeen for McInness, they refused to allow him to talk to us.

The day after their statement McInness isn't doing the training :pac:

What actions are these? Never heard of Tony Docherty before this.

Latest news is that he is staying put for the moment.

It's frustrating as hell but I am happy to give it time once we get the right man. In the meantime, happy to have Murty at the helm. Just hope he can get the team to perform like they did in the last two games.

Did a very good job with you guys getting you to the PL. You were rock solid at the back. Think most bears want someone with a connection to the club though. Limits our choices I know.

    Really embarassing statement from Jabba

    by Rangers Football Club

THERE has been a great deal of media speculation regarding the appointment of a new manager. We assure all supporters that they will be the first to know when we are certain we have someone with the correct qualities required by our club.

The Chairman made it clear at the AGM that the club did not consider there to be an outstanding candidate among those who had applied for the position and the club was therefore considering managers currently under contract. This requires permission from their present clubs.

The position of Rangers manager requires an ability to win football matches and the mentality to cope with the demanding off-pitch environment that goes with being the Rangers manager. This is a critical aspect of our assessment of any candidate during the interview process.

After the two games against Aberdeen, we requested permission to engage with their manager to assess his readiness and willingness to consider the Rangers position. This was declined. We were subsequently made aware by Aberdeen’s statement that, at this stage in his career, it would be best for him to remain in his current post. We endorse that position because moving to a massive club like Rangers is a big step with concomitant risk. We continue to consider candidates but will only appoint someone in whom we have full confidence and who feels he is ready for the job.

In the meantime, we have great confidence in Graeme Murty, who will continue as interim manager at least until the end of the year. The manner in which he has approached this task is a credit to himself and the club.

Quite undignified. If i'm reading it correctly, no-one who applied for the job was in any way decent, so they went looking at managers who are currently working, got turned down by the only plan B they had, and have nothing now. Until at the very least next year??

They endorse him staying at Aberdeen even though he was their number 1 man.

Amazing stuff they are feeding the fans with there. "The position of Rangers manager requires an ability to win football matches"

It does limit our choices and I don't agree with it personally. I'd prefer to get the best manager that's available to us and he can learn about the club, it's traditions etc by getting to know the club and fans. Neither McLeish nor McCoist are right for the job.

Im genuinely curious here, what exactly does he need to learn about the club and it's traditions? That they are a huge club with great potential in the future, however far off that may seem right now? Yeah thats blindingly obvious but what else and especially the traditions?

2-1 FT. Have to give credit to Murty and the rest of the team for digging this out today. We were not at our best but we stuck with it and got the win. Hibs away next which will require a much improved performance to get the points.
