Work done and now issue with tooth

    Hi all,

I recently had root canal treatment done on a bottom molar. It cost close to €1k. After the work was done I notice there was a 'wedge' like filling placed between my two bottom teeth. Presumably to stop food and the likes from getting caught between the teeth. It moved and sometimes would be a little uncomfortable but it was wedged between the teeth so wasn't able to come out. I was out of the country since the work was done so wasn't able to go back to the dentist to address the issue.

Anyway yesterday I was chewing and part of my tooth that I had the work done on broke off where this wedge was. I imagine it was the constant pulling and dragging of the wedge that eventually broke the tooth.

In my opinion this was very poor work. I knew from the moment I saw it that it didn't seem right but was going to wait until I came back in December to address it. What I'm wondering is if this is normal practice? And who is responsible for my now broken tooth that will presumable form an abysses!

Any help or advice would be appreciated, thank you

Were you advised to have a crown on the tooth?

Prior to root canal, except in the case of trauma, there is always large, deep fillings in teeth, after the root canal, the filling is even bigger due to the need to remove addition dentine in the centre of the tooth to access the canals. This of course weakens the tooth even further and makes it more likely to fracture. Generally, dentists advise patients to have posterior teeth crowned as soon as possible after the RCT is complete, to protect the remaining tooth, and if this cannot be done due to patient in availability/finance, dentists warn patients of the risk of fracture.

Get the crown done as soon as possible or you risk more of the tooth fracturing, A new abscess will not form as the canals are sealed.

Is it still possible to get the crown as part of the tooth has broken?

Usually yes, but depends on amount of tooth structure remaining, you would need to get this done before this weakend tooth breaks any further.
