On the water tank there's a red hand showing 1.5 bars - is that the max pressure to top up to when the heating is off or on?

I ask as the boiler didn't start tonight as the pressure had gone down to less than 0.5 bar. Just topped it up to just over that. Now that the heating is on, the black hand is at about 1.8 bar - over the 1.5 red hand. Is that OK?

1 bar at idle. It will climb when on.

I just topped it up to just over 0.5 bar. When cold I'll top it up to 1. Not sure why it went down - had a boiler service by Bord Gais last week.

That will probably give you a hot reading of about 2.3, should still be ok.
As for pressure drop...did you bleed any rads? Also check that the prv (usually piped to outside below the flue, but not always) isn't letting water pass.
