    Easy 8 Miles

For the first time in a long while, I really enjoyed a run. Headed to the Park after work. Starting to get dark. I wear the Nimbus and the long sleeved DCM16 top. In at Islandbridge Gate and I swing right, I turn right again onto Chesterfield and down to Park Gate. I switch to the zoo side of the road and start a complete ascent of Chesterfield, straight line to the Castleknock Gate.

It's now properly dark. I start my descent, again the full length of Chesterfield, gate to gate. I really grow into the run on this descent. There's a breeze blowing and I love the sound of the leafs in the trees overhead. The air is fresh. And it's so dark that I can hardly see the footpath ahead of me. If there was a pothole or branch in my way I would not have known. Senses are on alert and I'm concentrating all the way down. Really enjoying this. I need to start bringing my headlamp again though.

Legs feel fine during and after this.

Earlier I sat down and came up with the following run-in to DCM17. Some sessions are taken from P&D55, some not. Essentially I want to keep the legs ticking over and the mileage accumulating. I want to taper and I want to feel like I've navigated my way out of suspected over-training, and I want to inject a little speed every so often. I think these listed runs tick all those boxes.

    Recovery 4 Miles

Very pleasant conditions for this one. It had been pouring down at lunchtime but come early evening it was blue sky and mostly still. I head for AIT and run three laps of the short cross-country trail they have there. Nimbus are on and this is mostly run on grass or light mud. All goes fine. Had no issues staying inside recovery pace.

Forgot to mention that Monday I ordered a new pair of Asterias. If they arrive by Friday then they'll be worn for the 4x1200m. If not then that'll be my current pair's retirement session.

    Steady 5+ Miles

Friday's run was meant to be run at recovery pace but I miscalculated how long the loop I'd opted for was and ended up having to up the pace in order to get back to the office on time. This was time I've ever gone for a run while at the office. I need to run a shorter loop but otherwise this is something I'll definitely repeat. The showers are top class, surprised I haven't done this already.

Drizzly when I headed out. I ran up past AIT then back to near the train station, then turn left onto the Greenway and back to Garrycastle. Felt nicely energized for the rest of the afternoon. Mile 5 was faster than my actual planned marathon pace, but I really didn't notice. Felt it was much slower.

    VO2Max 16K with 4x1200m

Saturday morning's interval target pace was set at 3:40 [5:54] to 3:45 [6:02]. I'd run these off 3 minutes of jog recovery. I'd wear the Asterias for this and would retire them afterwards. My track was the path around the playing fields, running clockwise. It was warm and there was a swirling wind which was against me when running from Acres down and around to the Fort. Some pop-up race in progress around here this morning.

My warm-up didn't fill me with great confidence, legs were heavy. Remind myself that this is really the final tricky training session before DCM. I get started.

The first interval was the most comfortable of the morning. I fired up Acres far too fast and spent the rest of the interval trying to ease off the pace. The final 200m were a little tricky but otherwise this was very manageable.

The second interval was pretty similar to the first. I pushed a little less hard and I felt the wind against me a little more than on the first 1200. Lungs working and the last 300 to 400 were hard work.

The third and fourth intervals were tough. During the third 1200, near the end, the Garmin gave me my first 'too slow' alert. I pushed to ensure I'd hit target. Lungs and legs feeling it. I'm happy to have a full 3 minutes of recovery. The final 1200 is tough but has a slightly easier profile than the 3rd. I finish it on target.

Pleased to tick this one off. Nice way to retire the Asterias.

If I could manage to hold my average interval pace for a full 5K I would have logged an 18:37. These weeks though I feel I'm struggling with 5K and 10K pace, I doubt I could have held it for 5K.

    Interval 01 in 4:25.84 @ 3:42 [5:57]
    Interval 02 in 4:27.49 @ 3:43 [5:59]

    Interval 04 in 4:29.42 @ 3:45 [6:01]

    Long Run 16 Miles

I wasn't going to worry about pace for this one. The legs were tired after Saturday's 1200s and I'm continuing to be reasonably cautious about not over-working them. I am in taper after all. Sunday's run was about spending time on my feet.

Headed out early enough at just a little after 8:00am. Into the park at Islandbridge Gate and start to lap anticlockwise. Meet a mate behind the zoo who cycles with me for 40 minutes or so. I'm making up the route as I go, including a trip through the Furry Glen, a trip through the visitors' centre and one and a half descents along Chesterfield. Watch some of the Pink Run set-up. It is very warm today and I don't envy anybody who has to race.

The legs didn't feel very light for this and they definitely were still feeling Saturday's efforts. Pace picked up a little, very naturally over the closing miles.

    Decent weeks' running.

    Easy 8 Mile

Opted to swap this run around with the general aerobic run. I enjoyed last week's ascent and dark descent of Chesterfield so I decided to run it again, this time wearing a head lamp. I wore the Nimbus and a running jacket. Not as much post Ophelia debris lying around as I'd expected. Legs feeling heavy but responsive on the ascent. I turn at Castleknock Gate and start my descent. In some ways the headlamp reduces your vision, yes it allows you see the path immediately in front of you, but beyond the arc of light it's near pitch black, you're running in a cocoon.

Still concentrated along the path, waiting for walkers or other runners to emerge out of the dark. I also hear movement to the right on more than one occasion which I'm pretty sure were deer.

Legs have lost some of their heaviness come the end of the run.
Pass 1600 miles for the year.

General Aerobic 11K with 8x100m Strides

My first run in my new red Asterias was Wednesday evening in Athlone. Not a lot of motivation ahead of this one. The legs felt heavy again. I keep telling myself that it's better they feel heavy now rather than a week and a bit from now. I run the Old Dublin Road into town. I do a little lap of the east side of town and head back the way I came. Head up to Garrycastle bridge to run the strides. I always have these set-up on the Garmin, tonight they were a little more quickfire than normal as I'd accidentally set the recovery between strides to 100m rather than my usual 200m.

Asterias feel fine, plan is to wear them on raceday.

    Easy 4 Mile

My second ever lunch-time office run and again it's raining. I reduce my loop this time, running along Old Dublin Road, Retreat Road and Cartrontroy Road. I really don't feel like running at recovery pace so instead I ignore the watch and just run easy, letting the legs settle on whatever feels comfortable. Encouragingly they feel much fresher than yesterday evening.

Pretty wet when I return to the office. Enjoying this new lunch-time routine.

    VO2Max 5x800m

So last Saturday morning was my final bit of speed work before race day. Horrendous weather outside and I knew from the off that this would be rendered almost pointless by the conditions. I was soaked through within a minute of leaving home.

There was a silly headwind blowing from west to east. I headed over to the park and in at Islandbridge. Turning up Military Road it was difficult to just keep moving forward, the rain lashing into my face was stinging and forcing me to squint. No point in trying my 800s around the playing fields. I went up there anyway just out of curiosity to see how strong the wind would be. It was strong! Only one or two other runners out and we nod to each other.

If I wasn't just a week out from DCM I might have given this session a proper shot. But I remain sensible. I head out of the park at Chapelizod Gate and opt to run these along Chapelizod Road. I ran 3 with the wind at my back. I tried one into the wind :), and on the last 800 I ran the first 200m into the wind and the final 600m with the wind.

Target pace was 3:40 [5:54] to 3:45 [6:02]. However against the wind it was hard work just to hit 10K pace, and with the wind at my back I had to constantly apply the brakes to slow down from 3K pace. A fairly pointless interval session but fun all the same and at least I got the legs turning over quickly.

Last weekend bizarrely warm pre-Storm Ophelia temperatures, this weekend wind and rain from Storm Brian. Surely we're due a good weekend?

This is my third time wearing the Red Asterias and they have yet to see dry conditions.

    Interval 01 in 2:56.31 @ 3:40 [5:55]
    Interval 02 in 2:58.96 @ 3:44 [6:00]

    MLR 12 Miles

Weather was hugely improved come Sunday morning. I even had some short moments of autumn sunshine. I wasn't concerned with following the Garmin today, I'd just run 12 miles at whatever the legs deemed easy and natural. I ran my default 12 mile route: Sarsfield Road, Chapelizod Gate, Knockmaroon Gate, Tower Road, Whites Road, OS Road, Furze Road (complete with burnt out car this morning), Chesterfield, North Road, Acres Road, S-Bends, Park Gate, Heuston and home.

Legs felt ok but not spectacular. Some tiredness still there from yesterday. Wore the Nimbus for this. Lots of runners sporting previous years' DCM tops this morning.

    Rehearsal 11K with 3K @ (real) MP

A fairly manic day at and outside work on Tuesday meant I didn't lace up until Wednesday. On the menu 11K with 3K run at MP. I decided that I'd run these at real MP, so not at 2:55 marathon pace but instead at 3:10 pace. Ran this in Athlone after work. Headed up past AIT and past Ericsson, trying to decide where best to run the 3K of MP. I had been thinking laps round the Garrycastle bridge like ahead of the HM in Cork. Instead I decide to shift up to MP for the stretch along the N55 back to town.

It starts on an incline and so while I started too fast it takes very little effort to drop back to MP pace. When the road levels out and then starts to descend I have to ease off as the pace picks up again. Overall legs felt ok, not as fresh and light and bouncy as I'd like, but ok. The pace feels like a race pace, I have to focus to maintain it, it's not a pace where I can just switch off and settle in.
So I'll need to be concentrated on Sunday, unless I switch off and just focus on the 3:10 pacers.

Pleased enough with how the 3K went, and I need them a little faster than planned, which gives a little extra confidence boost.

Not sure if it was something I ate or not, but since Wednesday morning the gingerbread man has been a frequent visitor! To be honest this is my biggest concern at the moment (I've noted the toilet locations around the course), i really hope I don't need to make any unwanted pit-stops.

Best of luck tomorrow. We might bump into each other along the way - but hopefully not by the portaloos (gingerbread man keeps calling round here too!)

Best of luck to you too. Bib 1463 and I should be found just behind the 3:10 pacers (to pack some toilet roll or not, hmm).

Thanks. Fingers-crossed it'll all come together ok.

Not a chance :) I'm already petrified by the prospect of trying for it in 12 months time! All in good time ;)

    Easy 4 Miles

Third office lunchtime run. Getting better at organizing this, clothes bag, shower etc. A simple loop of Old Dublin Road, Retreat Road, Cartrontroy. First dry run for the new Asterias. Can't say the legs feel super. They still have a heaviness about them, footfall is still a bit flatter than I'd like. Form just doesn't feel relaxed. It's taper so I'm probably over-analysing every step.

    Easy to and from RDS

Gingerbread Man is still top of my list of worries. He's around again this morning. I throw a small rucksack on my back and jog slowly across town and out to the RDS. Registration is effortless. Pick up 6 gels for tomorrow (caffeine-free). Then bag in hand I jog back the way I came. Legs still not feeling fresh. Footfall still more rhino than antelope.

Last thoughts? I think the sub 3:10 target is fair. It carries a healthy mix of doubt and belief. Half the time I think I'll hit it, half the time I'm worried I'll blow up. If I felt certain of either of these two outcomes then my target wouldn't be right.

I don't feel like I'm coming off a block of marathon training. The last 4 weeks P&D unraveled a bit. I deliberately reduced the intensity after the failed 10Ks in September. I did at least manage to complete a 6x1M cruise session and a 4x1200m VO2 session. And at least the mileage has been fairly consistent.

Time to start telling myself to enjoy it. Take it kilometre by kilometre and not worry about the kilometres that haven't arrived yet. The plan is to travel at 4:30 [7:14] or 4:29 [7:12] for the first half and keep the 3:10 pacers in front of me. Then for the second half gradually up the pace to 4:28 [7:11] and eventually drift ahead of the pacers.

That's that then. Here's hoping my first beer in 29 days will at least be a PB one.

    Dublin Marathon 2017

    Pre Race

I was up early Sunday. Some porridge and toast with honey for breakfast. Conditions outside seemed ok. Despite the early rise I still end up leaving the house later than planned. I walk to town. Find some steps opposite Leinster House and remove tracksuit bottoms and running top. Leave my bag at the bag drop and make my way to the orange wave. There are only around 10 minutes to go when I join a portaloo queue. Luckily it was moving fast and once finished I had around 4 minutes to get to the start. I’d underestimated how busy it would be. I spent the next few minutes working my way through the crowd, past the 3:30 balloons and on towards the 3:20 balloons. I was about 30m behind the 3:20 balloons when the race started. Not ideal.

    The Race Plan

I planned on running at 4:29 [7:12] to 4:30 [7:14] pace for the first half and stay behind the 3:10 pacers. For the second half I’d try to up the average pace to 4:28 [7:11] and ease past the pacers. Simple right, not much to remember. The race goals were:

    <3:09:00 Paltinum
    <3:10:00 Gold
    <3:11:00 Silver
    <3:12:00 Bronze
    <3:13:43 Consolation (PB)

    01K to 05K in 22:16 @ 4:27 [7:10] Estimated finish time 3:07:54

Heavy heavy congestion over the opening couple of kilometres. I can’t complain too much, if I’d arrived earlier I would have been tucked in behind the green 3:10 balloons. I kept telling myself not to panic, the field will thin out and I will settle into my planned race pace. I keep looking up ahead just to at least maintain a visual on the 3:10 pacers. A few bollards emerge late from the crowd and I need to veer left or right. I watch the feet ahead of me not wanting to make contact with anyone’s heels. It’s only on K2 along Kevin Street that I manage to move ahead of the 3:20 balloons. I do find some breathing space now but I don’t check my momentum and I run K2 and K3 too fast. These logged at 4:20 [6:58] and 4:13 [6:47] pace. At the time I didn’t think much of this but now analysing the splits I reckon these opening kilometres did come back to haunt me. K3 was run at 2:57 marathon pace. Crazy.

The crowd forks around a faller along Usher’s Quay. Then we cross the Liffey and head up by Stoneybatter. I’m glancing at my Garmin and I know I need to ease off. I feel like I’m reducing the effort but the Garmin is mostly showing me travelling at 4:27 [7:09]. I tuck in behind a runner in a Scottish top and let him pace me for a while. Complete the first 5K as we approach Phoenix Park.

    06K to 10K in 22:20 @ 4:28 [7:11] Estimated finish time 3:08:10

Field nicely spread out now. Happy to be entering familiar territory in the Park section. I lose track of my Scottish pacer somewhere on K7. I take my first gel and settle into the ascent up Chesterfield. It’s a gorgeous autumn morning, exactly the sort of conditions I was hoping for by switching from Cork to Dublin. One runner behind me comments that we are lucky there is no wind blowing along this open and no-where-to-hide stretch. All along the ascent I’m trying to slowly drop the pace, but the average pace is locked in at 4:27 [7:09] and it’s not budging. I’m feeling good, I’m not too concerned. The green balloons are a little closer but still around 150m up the road. In hindsight I should have really slowed here until 4:29 [7:12] was showing, not only was I travelling a little too fast, I was also doing so over a long steady incline. I reckon this too came back to haunt me.

    11K to 15K in 21:53 @ 4:23 [7:03] Estimated finish time 3:07:03

This was my fastest 5K of the morning. Out of the park and continue up to Castleknock. Notice that I’m overtaking a few runners here. The support as we turn onto College Road is incredible. Shivers down the spine stuff and you cannot help but beam a smile. The 3:10 pacers are only about 100m ahead of me at this point. I love the big archery targets taped to the inside of the big open wheelie bins along the roadside. The legs feel good and have an extra bounce following the roadside support and from the fact that we are no longer climbing. Kilometres 4 to 11 inclusive had all logged with net elevation gains. Now it’s time to freewheel down Tower Road. Take gel number 2 along here. K13 logged at 4:13 [6:47], too fast but understandable as it had the easiest profile of the day. Back into the park and the road profile continues to result in fast kilometres, 4:24 [7:05] and 4:22 [7:01]. Average pace was now mostly showing 4:26 [7:08], my plan to be running the first half at 4:29 [7:12] to 4:30 [7:14] was effectively dead and buried. I’m targeting a sub 3:10 marathon and right now I’m closer to sub 3:07 pace. I should probably have had estimated finishing time showing on the Garmin, that might have acted as better incentive to apply the brakes.

    16K to 20K in 22:23 @ 4:29 [7:12] Estimated finish time 3:07:26

We leave the park behind for good now. Get my first shout out of the day as I go over the bridge in Chapelizod. K17 brings with it the first proper hill of the morning. I navigate this without issue. I’d hoped it would reduce my average pace but it’s still locked in at 4:26 [7:08]. Around here a black runner passes by me at speed, he works his way quickly up through the field. His physique and his pace suggest this was an elite that was late for the party. K18 features a second significant climb under the rail-bridge and up Sarsfield Road. Here I pass the first runner that looked like he was genuinely struggling, ouch. K19 along Inchicore Road and through Kilmainham is one of my favourites. I get a lot of roadside support from family and friends. It’s probably the kilometre where I’m most conscious of my running form, need to look comfortable, strong and fluid. Junior outforarun looks bemused to see me running past. Onto SCR now, over the canal and into Rialto. I lost concentration while acknowledging the local roadside support and forgot to take gel number 3 at 18K, take it instead on K20.

20K completed and I’m feeling fine, it’s all very manageable. I’m optimistic. But I should have been more concerned about the fact that average pace was still mostly showing 4:26 [7:08] and I was travelling at 3:07 marathon pace. So much for running a negative split to come home in 3:09:XX.

    21K to 25K in 22:32 @ 4:31 [7:15] Estimated finish time 3:08:03

Into probably my least favourite stretch of the course, out along the Crumlin Road. A steady exposed incline, that goes on for the guts of 3K. The only positive is that you pass through the half-way marker. I run with two Garda runners along here. And it’s along here that officially I feel the first moments of tiredness of the day. Nothing dramatic, but the effort levels have just gone up a little. Just enough to keep my optimism in check. This is a marathon, it’s not going to gift me a super time. I remember thinking that there was no point in pushing now. I wasn’t chasing a negative split anymore. Average pace was showing 4:27 [7:09] and I told myself it’s ok to take it easy and let this drop to 4:28 [7:11]. Another roadside shout-out around here.

    26K to 30K in 22:13 @ 4:27 [7:09] Estimated finish time 3:07:57

A new problem had arrived. Heat. The sun had come out, this part of the course doesn’t have much greenery nor tarmac. Hard concrete in abundance. No wind blowing so I could feel the heat weighing down. Sweat in my eyes. I started looking for shade. I told myself that this is no where near as bad as June last year. Between the 14 mile marker and 15 mile marker was a bad patch for me, the legs were feeling tired, the heat was worrying and there was the knowledge that it’s still early days, this is far too early to be hitting issues. A runner ahead of me overtakes another runner, asks her if she’s ok, she replies ‘not really’ and wishes him good luck. So I’m not the only one feeling an early pinch.

Thankfully this period doesn’t last. More clouds arrive and the sun loses some of its strength, the profile of the road improves and gives some relief to the legs. Plus up ahead the 3:10 ballon seems to have drawn closer. My pace feels strong again as we head down the Templeogue Road. I’m overtaking people. Legs can feel the effort but they also feel strong. The average pace on the Garmin is unwavering at 4:27 [7:09]. I post a quick 4:25 [7:07] on K29. Feeling a little optimistic again having weathered this small storm. I go through the 30K marker. I’m not feeling terrible, there are only 12K to go. It’s still game on.

    31K to 35K in 23:02 @ 4:36 [7:25] Estimated Finish Time 3:08:52

Scotland top is back. He’s up ahead of me. Not sure if I’ve caught him up or if he has just overtaken me. K31 and K32 both log at 4:27. The numbers are good, but now the calves are starting to protest. They had been for a while, but now they have my attention. Go past the 20 mile marker without any great fanfare. I’m tired again. And now my footfall starts to be heavy. It’s becoming tough mentally, the creeping fatigue, every new ache, every heavy footfall they all threaten to auger in a race ruining crisis. Pessimism is replacing optimism. The 3:10 balloons are still there, about 150m up ahead. The average pace is still good, still showing 4:27 [7:09]. But then K33 logs at 4:36 [7:24]. We’re on Clonskeagh Road. On K34 as we head down towards the Dodder I try to follow the racing line but a female runner is in my way. Earlier on this would have been a non issue, but I need to check my stride and it really upsets my rhythm. That fact that this upsets me, upsets me even more, it confirms that the game has changed. I try to steady the ship but K35 and K36 log at 4:45 [7:38] and 4:46 [7:40]. The balloons are starting to drift. There are still over 7K to go.

    36K to 40K in 24:28 @ 4:54 [7:52] Estimated finish time 3:11:03

It’s not a catastrophic collapse by any means. I’m not desperate for the finish line. It feels more deflating than anything else. The pace is dropping steadily but not super rapidly. I thought that the hill on Foster Avenue would be the nail in the coffin, but strangely I was able to navigate it quite well. And when I crested the hill and started the downhill toward Stillorgan Road the pace picked up again. It took me a while to unzip the pocket in which I was carrying my final gel, I was pulling the zip in the wrong direction, was I losing the plot?

K37 was slow at 4:35 [7:22], but it was 15 seconds faster than K36. I was overtaking people that were suffering more than I was. And once I turned onto the Stillorgan Road I realised that I could still see the green 3:10 balloon, ok it was probably 400ms away at least, but was there hope of a miracle recovery? It was downhill here, enjoy the respite, only 5K to go. But once we turned off Stillorgan Road and the profile flattened out the pace dropped off again and the legs were starting to really protest now. One spectator told us to relax, specifically to relax our arms, this helped. I was desperate to turn onto Merrion Road, just so mentally I could tell myself I was on the home-straight. K38 and K39 were 4:56 [7:56] and 4:52 [7:49]. With each stride the legs were becoming more fatigued, I was leaking speed, it felt so slow. K40 logged at 5:14 [8:25]. It was about damage limitation now.

    41K to the Finish Line

The longest 2K. Legs were hurting. All sorts of mental tricks were being employed to convince myself I was nearly there. But it was painstakingly slow. I was being overtaken, but I was also overtaking. There were a lot of people in a lot of discomfort along here. Scotland top overtakes me, he looks so strong. One runner is more or less walking in the middle of the road looking down intently at the white line and obviously focusing on following the line to get home safely. I can’t remember exactly where, but somewhere along here I glance at the Garmin and I see a total time of 3:08:XX. Not as dreadful as I expected. Anyone tracking me could still think I was on target. Under the trees along Northumberland Road. The 800m marker is not greeted with any joy, 2 laps of the track seem impossibly long. Roars from the crowd. Hold your shape, last push.

Finally Mount Street Lower. The gantry seems far away. I look at the Garmin, I look at the gantry, the Garmin again the gantry again. Legs are shot but with 100ms to go I try to sprint, I might just get a PB. The legs do respond the pace increases and I cross the line.

One second!! One second over 26.2 miles ensures that I do log my fastest ever marathon!! I move from 3:13:43 to 3:13:42. Crazy. Because this one second falls on the right side of my PB it means I can take some success from the day. If it had fallen on the other side and I’d come home in 3:13:44 I’d never have forgiven myself. Every second counts.

    Thoughts

I went out too fast. If I look at mile splits on Strava I see M2 and M8 both logged at 6:54. I may have felt comfortable and I may have been genuinely easing off, but I clearly didn’t ease off enough. I had strayed from the plan early on and I wasn’t suitable alarmed by this while it was happening.

I also wonder if I’ve gone as far as I can go with PD55. Not just physically but also mentally, I wasn’t as engaged with the plan as I have been in previous cycles. I definitely need to try something new and I’m genuinely excited about switching to JD for a while. Even though I’m on target for 2000 miles for the calendar year, my weekly mileage is still relatively low at around 38 miles a week. I think this needs to increase, up to 45 at least.

Diet has been mostly good. Core, strength exercises and stretching have been non-existent, sleep has been poor.

I’m close to sub 3:10, I think some tweaks to training both the running and non running elements will get me there next time out. Funnily this marathon hasn’t knocked my confidence. But sub 3:00 is still some way away, I knew it was. I know how my body has responded in previous marathons, I know how my marathon VDOT lags behind VDOTs from other distances. For now 3:10 has become the new 3:30. Sub 3:00 will have to wait a while longer.

Big thumbs up to the organisers, seamless flow to the event, from bag-drop to starting pens, loos, water stations, signage and a really nice racing top. The support yesterday along the road was the best I've ever encountered in any race I've run. I like the course and I'm looking forward to lining up again (touchwood) next year.

(I'll post up splits etc tomorrow)

    October Review

Started the month with a hungover 20 miler. The last 3 miles were particularly unpleasant. I was devoid of energy for the afternoon, it was physically hard work to cook and I couldn’t eat until later in the day. Not an experience I want to repeat. I had already decided to quit alcohol for October up to raceday and this run made that decision so much easier.

Because I felt I had over-trained in September and was worried after my 10K TT blow-up, I pretty much abandoned P&D for October. While this might have been wise, I still didn’t feel good about it, and couldn’t shake the feeling that I had failed the training block. Still managed to get some decent sessions completed, a testing set of 4x1200m, a silly wind disrupted 5x800m, and an enjoyable 6x1M cruise intervals. This latter is one I’ll try to repeat, looks ‘ok’ on paper but the 60 seconds recovery makes it a challenge and forces you to focus on pacing.

Other runs that stand out include a dark Tuesday evening Chesterfield descent. Really enjoyed the novelty of this as concentration, eyes, and ears were all worked. And all the time running with a certain tension that a deer isn’t going to suddenly emerge out of the dark.

I retired one pair of Asterias, they brought me 10M and HM PBs. Began running in new red pair of Asterias (and they’d bring me a marathon PB, just). Started lunchtime runs at the office as well. Nice set up with showers etc and a handy way to clock up a time efficient 4 miles midweek.

But the month will be remembered for DCM17.

A one second PB and a BQ time prevents the race from being a complete disappointment. The race has already distilled into a handful of key memories: the Castleknock support at Myo’s, the wobble around mile 15, the moment on Clonskeagh Road when I had to check my stride to follow the racing line and instantly knew for certain my sub 3:10 was gone, the little flicker of hope on Foster’s, the pained tree-lined shuffle of the last 2K. Once again my marathon time logs my poorest VDOT of any distance. It continues to stay out of sync with my other race times and annoyingly it stays out of sync with times set during marathon training sessions.

I think I’ve gone as far as I can on PD55: it brought me from 3:39 to 3:24 to 3:18, but now has produced two consecutive 3:13s. Time for change, maybe of plan, maybe just of mileage. Training against a sub 2:55 marathon pace has probably counterproductive. It was great for confidence, but probably not so great for the legs. I also didn’t pace well on the day, need to be much more disciplined next time out. I enjoyed DCM though; it’s made me hungrier for an eventual sub 3:00 and it’s made me really appreciate how difficult that will be. But the immediate goal remains at breaking 3:10.

    Catch Up

Since DCM I’ve been gradually getting back into it. Slowly cranking up the miles. Other than making sure I stay on track for a 2000 mile year I don’t have any set-in-stone plan for the rest of November. It’ll be mostly easy running and I’ll be mostly making it up as I go along.

I’ve opted not to race Jingle Bells as I won’t be able to do any proper 5K specific stuff ahead of it and I don’t want to just turn up on the day and go for broke. Luckily that 1 second PB in DCM means I’ve hit my annual 4 PBs target (5M, 10M, HM and Marathon).

I’ll try for a Parkrun PB in December. I’ll either try in Waterstown or in Parco Nord in Milan (or maybe both). It’ll allow me to run some 5K specific sessions in December. I’d like to include a 20x200 session on the indoor track in AIT.

So a quick summary of what I’ve been doing since DCM.

    Thursday 2 Nov - Easy 4 Miles @ 8:43 min/mile
First run since DCM and my only run for that week. Served just to confirm that the legs were still working, were tired but were niggle free.

    Monday 6 Nov – Easy 7 Miles @ 8:36 min/mile
Started the week’s running after work in Athlone. Legs did not feel great on this one. They felt heavy and unresponsive. I think this is due more to recent inactivity rather than residual tiredness from DCM. The effort felt greater than what I’d expect for 8:36 average pace.

    Tuesday 7 Nov – Easy 4 Miles @ 8:02 min/mile
A lunchtime run at the office. Usual loop. Legs feeling better but still heavy. Each mile a little faster than the previous.

    Thursday 9 Nov – Easy 4 Miles @ 8:40 min/mile
Another lunchtime run, this time back in Dublin around the playing fields in the park. Legs felt good for this. I also passed 1700 miles for the year. 300 miles to go, nearly 2 months to complete them.

    Saturday 11 Nov – 18K with 11+K @ 3:07MP
Out early Saturday morning in Cork for this one. Chill in the air. I wanted to stretch the legs a bit this morning and run something other than easy pace. I decided on trying three anti-clockwise laps of Centre Park Road – Monahan Road – Marina at sub 3:10 marathon pace. I like this loop.

Did around 4K of warm-up before getting underway. It was easy to hit target pace. In fact it was all too reminiscent of marathon morning, I was settling on 4:26 [7:08] or 4:27 [7:09] pace rather than 4:28 [7:11] or 4:29 [7:12] pace. Lap one was run too fast so I try to ease off on lap two, but my attempt fails and I logged a 6:59 mile on this lap. The third lap I do manage to drop the pace slightly but still finish the MP section with a 3:07 marathon pace rather than a 3:09 marathon pace. Enjoyed this run and once the legs had warmed up to MP pace they felt very comfortable maintaining it. Lots of rowers setting up shop along the Marina, and lots of tree stumps along Centre Park Road following Ophelia.

    04.03K @ 5:35 [2.50M @ 9:00]
    11.69K @ 4:27 [7.26M @ 7:09]
    02.42K @ 4:57 [1.50M @ 8:00]
    Total 18.14K @ 4:46 [11.27M @ 7:40]

    Sunday 12 Nov – Easy 9+ Miles @ around 8:14 min/mile
This was an uncomfortable early morning run in Cork. The Gingerbread Man came knocking after just a few miles. I headed out of town toward Glanmire then up Church Hill to Mayfield. Along here I realise that my Garmin has gone dead. Not sure why, I may have switched it off by accident. Either way I use my phone to track the remainder of the run. Back to town via Montenotte and Wellington Road. The Gingerbread Man forced me to cut a mile or two off the end of this. Not an enjoyable run.

    Monday 13 Nov – Comfortable 10 Miles @ 7:55 min/mile
I took Monday off work. Dropped junior outforarun to school in my running gear and headed off on a 10 miler. Chilly start to this one, I was glad I was wearing gloves. Right hand would have been ‘pulsing’ if I hadn’t. I run from James through Inchicore out the Ballyfermot Road and down into Chapelizod along the Kylemore Road. Through Chapelizod Village and I take in an ascent up Knockmaroon. Enter the park at White’s Gate. I’ve warmed up now and there’s a little more sunshine, hands aren’t cold anymore. I run a descent of Chesterfield which includes a 6:59 mile. Exit at Islandbridge and home via IMMA. Pace felt natural all the way round.

    Wednesday 15 Nov – Easy 7+ Miles @ 8:23
Another evening lap of Athlone, up through Garrycastle, back into town along the Ballymahon Road and complete the loop back to AIT along the Old Dublin Road. Add on an excursion into AIT and a lap of the IDA business park. Without fail I spot rabbits everytime I run in the IDA park. This was my first run as an M45. Wore new running gloves from Lidl, very impressed at how warm they kept my hands.

    Friday 17 Nov – Easy 4 Miles @ 7:48
Happy to get out of the office at lunchtime for this one. Felt a bit flat-footed going around my usual loop. Light running jacket on, keeping me feeling nice and cosy.

And that’s it since DCM. This weekend I plan on another MP run, this time 3 laps of the Furze-OS-Chesterfield loop. Undecided for Sunday. Next week I might try an easy interval session, maybe 5x600m. I’ll see.

    15+K with 8K @ 3:06 MP

Didn't want to run anything too stressful Saturday, but didn't fancy sticking to easy pace either. Opted to run another short sub 3:10 marathon pace session. Bit chilly outside so gloves and jacket on. Into the park at Islandbridge and up the Khyber and on to Furze. My start line is the third new tree on the right hand side. Three laps on the menu.

It was easy to fall into target pace and once again I run a fraction faster than intended. It underlines how important sticking to goal pace is, 4:26 [7:08] might not seem so far outside target, only a few seconds, but it could mean running a 3:06 as opposed to a 3:09 marathon.

Too many unpredictable and off-the-leash dogs around this morning for my liking. Legs feel heavy and not super responsive but the pace is perfectly manageable. The laps seem so much longer when run at MP rather than 10K pace.

Finish the three laps, it comes to 8.15K @ 4:42 [5.06M @ 7:08]. Then I return home the way I came, carrying some of the MP momentum and completing this 'cool down' at 4:34 [7:20] pace, felt easy.

    3.73K @ 5:23 [2.32M @ 8:39]
    8.15K @ 4:26 [5.06M @ 7:08]
    3.79K @ 4:34 [2.36M @ 7:20]

    Total 15.67K @ 4:41 [9.74M @ 7:33]

    Easy 10+Miles

Out for a late morning run today. Had planned on at least 12 miles but pottered about for a little too long at home so needed to cut this short. I used it as an opportunity to debut my Brooks Glycerin 15s. This is not an insignificant event, the only non-racer shoe I've ever used is the Asics Nimbus. I placed my usual small insoles inside before lacing up.

Very first impression, these are bouncy. A smooth and comfortable ride. They are noticeably heavier than the Asterias but I feel they are a little lighter than the Nimbus. I head into the park at Islandbridge, turn right and head up behind the zoo then exit at Ashtown Gate. I'm not checking pace on the Garmin, goal is just to run at whatever the legs feel comfortable with. I join the canal and run to the Castleknock Lock. Then begin a long descent, down Castleknock Road to the Castleknock Gate and then straight down through the Park to the Parkgate roundabout. I opt to go off-road in the Park, giving the Glycerins a muddy baptism.

Air is fresh and autumnal. Legs grow into the run. I exit at Islandbridge and head back home. If asked to guess I would have said average pace 8:10 for the morning, so i was pleasantly surprised to see a 7:50 average.

A 40+ mile week so getting back on track for 2000 miles, just 7 miles behind target.

    Easy 4 Miles

A lunchtime run Tuesday in damp and grim conditions. I wore the Nimbus on this one, planning on making it their retirement run, but they felt surprisingly comfortable and so I reckon I'll keep them going for a little while longer. I'll alternate them with the Glycerins.

Legs were good. Starting to get itchy now to start running some proper sessions again, starting to get itchy to get back on a plan again.

    Easy 7+ Miles

I had planned initially on running 5x600m on the track Wednesday evening but an early rise and a long and busy day in the office had me feeling a bit jaded. I opted instead for a less demanding 7 miler, along my Ballymahon Road loop. No pressure on, no looking at the Garmin, just tip around gently, relaxed.

I have 5 Saturdays to go ahead of a planned Parkrun PB attempt on 30 December in Milan (there is a possibility I might instead pace a mate to a 26:XX in that Parkrun and then race the Tom Brennan 5K in the park on New Year's Day).

I think this Saturday I'll try a 5x600, or 5x800 around the Furze-OS-Chesterfield loop. Then the following Saturday's I'll try some tempo and hill work. Maybe run some 3K pace sessions in AIT. I need to come up with a plan over the weekend. This month I don't feel like I've been training at all, starting to feel lethargic and I need to inject some life back into the legs.
