    Not actually sure about that.

Why clog up the entryway and make people uncomfortable. Also the longer people sit, the more they order. I have often arrived before a group and when I am seated I almost always order a drink or olives/nuts.

Had the same experience at Spitjack, I arrived 10 mins early, my friends were 10 minutes late.....had to stand in the doorway for 20 minutes before they'd sit me even though my table had been free the whole time.

Ate in the Oyster Tavern there a few days ago. The place is beautiful inside, but the food was only average. Menu is boring enough, burger, fish and chips, steak and a salad on mains. Starters had chowder and scampi, a salad.

Anyway, i had the chowder and fish and chips. Not enough fish in the chowder for my taste, huge volume of cream, chips were kinda pale and floppy. Batter on fish was thick. So, yeah, alright I guess. Nothing poisonous about it, but nothing to write home about either.

    Staff were attentive and friendly.

Was there last weekend with my Mum and was very disappointed. Had the chowder too and there was about 3 big long bones in a chunk of the fish which put me right off - and I wouldn’t mind but you could see them sticking out when the bowl was put in front of me - so, should have been spotted before it left the kitchen (or properly deboned to begin with!). We said it to the waitress and she said she would let the chef know and she came back out and said he was “very suprised” but he didn’t apologise or anything....I mean, I left the bones on the plate for him to see so it’s not like I made it up! My mum had the beef and it was ok, a big Yorkshire pudding (not a common accompaniment with an Irish roast) and 2 roast potatoes and a bit of veg underneath the one slice of beef - 19e....bit pricy.

The chowder was very bland also and way too creamy.

    Wouldn’t be rushing back.

I went for brunch (you can tell I like my brunch) in the Oyster Tavern a few weeks after it opened. Coffee was horrible. Tasted like instant coffee. I had eggs florentine and specificslly asked for the eggs runny. Shouldn’t have to but I always do anyway. I hate overcooked poached eggs! Of course when they brought them out they were pretty much hard boiled.

They did change it for me but took a very long time considering there was only one other table in the place... Wouldn’t be rushing back! Saying that though I’ve been at night and the cocktails are nice enough. Really nice interior too.

It's a shame that the food seems so bad in the Oyster. I haven't eaten there, after being not impressed with the boring menu that advertised their chicken as coming from Chicken Inn...

Glad that’s not just me! I like it when a place lists suppliers, but they picked the cheapest / worst suppliers of every item and stuck it on there. Why would you source smoked salmon from o’connells instead of Hederman’s I ask ya!

It’s a real shame they can’t pull something special out of the bag with the market right on their doorstep.

    .

Maybe not a great example there. I'd say Hederman's is several times the price of the O' Connell's stuff - not just a bit dearer.

Looking at their menu, I'd say the clientele they are after wouldn't pay the ridiculous premium for Hederman's.

But, yeah, Chicken Inn is just weird!

It's still bar food at the end of the day. Haven't eaten in there but I like it as a bar. Staff are good too.

Speaking of Bar Food, was at the Muskerry Arms Bar in Blarney on Saturday for a group function event in their restaurant and really happy with the food and service.

Not sure what you mean by that, plenty of bars that serve great food.

Wouldn’t necessarily expect gourmet smoked salmon in a bar at the prices. What bars in Cork serve great food as a matter of interest?

My OH is a chef in Paddy the Farmers, the food seems very popular, but haven't eaten there myself.

Had some decent food in Gallaghers.

Does anyone know what's due to replace Wagamamas? I know someone earlier mentioned a burger place. Wonder if the city would support another one to be honest. Five Guys seems like it would work alright, here's hoping!

Just on the Oyster, I went last weekend for dinner with some friends. The food was fine, but my word the menu is so boring. It felt very generic to me anyway.

My workspace has been temporarily relocated for a few weeks and it has facilitated me spending the last fortnight eating as much food from Iyer's Cafe as humanly possible! Unfortunately it's closed at the moment until next week due to illness but oh holy moly the food is excellent. I couldn't rave about the place any more.

Tis a pity. Recently saw a menu for the Oyster Tavern dating from the 1950's - I think if the the place served what they served back then I eat there on a regular basis.

Same company also owns 'House' in Limerick afaik- and although also 'bar' - it serves some fairly decent food

It’s actually a perfect example of my point. Each place listed on their suppliers list would be in the “cheapest” (and poorest quality) bucket. If you’re doing that, just leave them off... seriously, what’s the point of even highlighting that you go for the yellow pack options for your ingredients?

The decor and effort with clientele certainly don’t match the menu. They had tuxedo-ed bouncers Ffs. It LOOKS like they are trying to get the grown up crowd, but then they put a student special menu on.

I think you are giving 'yellow pack', a bad name there as it now tends to be product of high quality. But know what you mean.
Even mobile chippers sometimes don't stock the cheapest rubbish going.

I see Allresh and The Good Fish Co, picking up All Ireland awards:

    https://www.joe.ie/life-style/best-takeaway-ireland-606629

Allfresh, best fruit and veg wholesaler and The Good Fish Co, the best fish supplier. No excuses for any retail food in Cork with these on their doorstep.

Interesting! I stopped going to the Good Fish company years ago, when I asked for a fish to be scaled in the Ballincollig shop, and they looked at me like I had two heads. Couldn't fillet, couldnt' bone, didn't know anything about the fish in front of them, like where it came from or how to cook it. Just untrained retail staff, no fish-mongers there. Have they improved?

interesting to see Flemings on there as best restaurant as well. Good for them! Great spot.

You questioned why someone would put O'Connell's as a supplier rather than Hederman's.
I pointed out that Hederman's would be prohibitively expensive for any restaurant other than a very high end one to have as a supplier, hence not a very good example.

The Good Fish Company have about 5 retail shops. Their main business is wholesale. They supply Aldi with their own brand.
The shop in Carrigaline is the HQ, extended recently. I think is has a deli.

Dukes on Carey's Lane do an excellent breakfast. Was there this morning and got two perfectly cooked eggs, bacon, tomato, potato cake, avocado and toast from really good quality bread. Everything perfectly seasoned and I spread the avocado on the toast which was delicious. Coffee was also superb.

I wish I took a photos as it looked so good.

Aha. And if you're doing that... going for the cheapo version, why highlight it on the menu. That was my question.
Do I need to get out the finger puppets here?  ;)

Coz possibly the majority of their customers won't actually give a **** about a perceived quality difference between different suppliers but may be happy to see a local source of the meat as that is more important to most. They are supporting local suppliers and jobs and that is good.

You'd swear 'twas coming from a bin out the back of the market.

It's not like they're advertising that they're getting it from Iceland though. O'Connell's isn't exactly bargain basement crap, it's only the cheapo option in comparison to Hederman's.

It's pub food rather than a gourmet restaurant, a place going for a different market choosing to highlight that would be weird, but this is a pub advertising that it's using a reasonably good quality, local supplier with a long history in the area and huge name recognition. That's perfectly reasonable for them to do, and it's easy to understand why they'd do it, so the finger puppets comment is pretty bitchy tbh.
