Automated Machine in Nespresso store - can someone tell me how it works?!

^^^ How does that magic automated point of sale in the Nespresso shop know how many boxes, and of which type are in the bag.

Boxes appear to be the same weight, and they are already in a bag so there is no scanning of barcodes? Magic?

While I've never inspected the cartons all that closely, I'd guess it's a case that the pod sleeves are RFID tagged, and there's a reader in the bay where you put the bag. Presence of a write up in RFIDjournal seems to lend some credence to this idea also.

Look at the end of the sleeves of capsules. You'll see a little clear plastic sticker, that's an RFID tag. Make sure to tear it off before putting the cardboard sleeve into the recycling.

You can't stick that in the recycling?

No - neither on the sleeves (it will contaminate them as its no longer paper/cellulose) or on its own (its mixed metal/plastic). The tag should be of negligible weight when torn off the cardboard sleeve.
