Can anyone suggest an insurance company who would cover me on a classic car bought on UK plates until I bring it home and have it Vrt'd. All suggestions I can find from researching say Quinn used to cover you with the yellow plate reg and then give them the new reg once you had it sorted to continue on the policy but they are no more

You sure? It's normally no problem as long as you have your car VRTd, on Irish plates and NCTd and motor tax paid within 30 days and sent your insurer proof of all that. I specifically asked my insurer (First Ireland) last week and I brought a car in from the UK two days ago.

What car is it? Oh I see now you mention Quinn, so not classic insurance?

It is classic insurance I am looking for, I am looking at a few different cars , mgb's, e21 bmw's, mk2 escorts. I'm just looking for a nice clean car most importantly. Its my first time looking for classic insurance so i wasnt sure if any of the current insurers would do that. I was hoping to just get a normal policy on an older car but its impossible

Have you insurance on a normal car too? Or does your partner have a car and you are a named driver on their insurance?

We have 2 cars at the moment both insured in own names, both full ncb and insured on each others cars too. I'm selling mine to buy a classic. So far it looks like one of us will have to go as named driver on other ones policy and give up ncb in a couple of years when it runs out. I don't need a car for work so its only an evening weekend thing so looks like I'll give up mine. Don't mind too much as long as I get something nice to drive but would be nice to keep ncb, took long enough to build it up

Ring First Ireland. As long as you are a named driver on your partner's car, not only will you be able to get classic insurance with them and keep your ncb, you will actually build up further ncb in your own name

That's exactly what I have now. Obviously you and your classic car need to be approved by them, which is not always as straight forward. Forget about Japanese cars for instance and it depends on your age and your ncb, what kind of car they will insure for you.

Good luck and keep us posted!

    And welcome to boards :)

    '87 W201 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.6

Cost me €80 fully comprehensive insurance to add to my other classic :)

I had no problem organising insurance cover - limited to 30 days - via Autoline insurance brokers.

    Yes it was!

I've already got another classic insured with them, a late 90s Porsche Boxster.

Are you saying that I might be able to get a classic policy without having a policy in my own name? Had 2 cars in the house up until June - I don't drive enough, so got rid of my car and use my partner's car occasionally as a named driver on her policy.

Yes. That's exactly the situation I'm in with First Ireland. Ring them!

Called them yesterday, no luck unfortunately. They told me that since July 2016, all new customers have to have a main policy to take out a classic policy through them.

Bit disappointed! Wanted to pick up a w201 or w124, but they won't ensure them on a regular policy as they're generally too old and classic policies have the main car stipulation.

Very sorry to hear it :(

I guess I am lucky to be one of their existing classic car insurance customers.

If you are married then you can take out a policy on your spouses car. It means that you can keep your NCD by swapping main drivers every 2nd year and it'll allow you to have a main policy to take out the classic insurance ;)
