Worked well together? He read the piece on his teleprompter and she read what was on hers. I never saw them as a team.

    Misery guts right here.

We love making "celebs" out of almost anyone in this country.

If you want a legendary newsreader/caster/anchor:

But, like, what did he do that was so remarkable? Never understood the Trevor fuss.

I think newscasting is a much tougher gig than it looks - Dobson was good.

Lads is all the bitterness and cynicism really necessary? I know Irish people find it hard to be positive about anything for some reason but come on - what did Dobbo ever do to deserve such negativity?

He was a great anchor and I for one wish him well in the future.

Well said...he's done well and fair dues to him..I love to see people doing well, being healthy and being happy...all depends on your outlook..positive vibes :)

    His on screen presence!
He could make any news story interesting, remarkable powerful voice!

A pure orator, what an anchorman should be!

Not just that... some of the interviews and stories he fronted were ground-breaking (eg: the Saddam and Mandela interviews as referenced in the clip), as well as the other shows he presented for ITV

Has this been confirmed or is it just speculation? Id say Caitrona Perry would be very happy with that. Certainly an easier job than the one she has in America which can be very lonely. They would have to get a new American reporter then do. Any idea who that could be?
Id also say that Keelin Shanley would be very happy. What other jobs does she do besides Crimecall?

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

But surely fronting big stories is just incidental? Could be any newsreader.

She's doing the 9pm news as well.

Keelin does the radio news - Morning Ireland.
Presumbably will be finishing up with that.

They should build an enormous statue of him, it could straddle the Liffey like an Irish version of the Colossus of Rhodes. You'd be able to see it from Wales, its construction would create thousands of jobs and it would attract millions of tourists.

yes but why is she doing crimecall

Had to laugh at the clip of his "best bits". Essentially just him reporting live on world events, reading from a script, in the exact same tone of voice. Solid, but far from spectacular. Longevity does not equal greatness.

...which he would have written or co-authored, you know.

Modern newsreaders are just like other journalists, but instead of having you read their articles, they read them to you, and also conduct live interviews with politicians and contributors.

It's a real job, and the live nature of it makes it more demanding than print journalism, in many ways.

It could end up being a much more engaging programme. Keelin Shanley is an excellent interviewer and Perry seems extremely analytical.

RTE news has suffered a lot from being stuck in a very old school format of treating the presenters as just "readers" instead of "anchors"

Dobson occasionally broke out of that but not very often really as the format didn't seem to allow it.

Now if they just got a more contemporary looking and sounding set of titles and interacted much more with their own correspondents rather than that awful dismissive "and now for some stories from our regional correspondents..."

Which sounds like : and now for some news from culchyland. It's probably something about cows or whatever it is you bogtrotters are interested in.

That's a stunning idea.they definitely should do that.

yes but why is she doing crimecall

Because she's a presenter employed by RTE, and Crimecall is an RTE programmer that needs a presenter?

    It's not complicated.
