Gender pay disparity - what is the truth?

    I cannot believe that a woman who does the same job as a man - in the same organisation - and works the same number of hours and has been in the organisation for just as long would be paid less than the man.

    They are not.

    Isn't it the case that a woman who has children might get paid less because of maternity leave and parental leave at other times and working a reduced number of days for that reason? That's not discrimination; that's biology.

    Two factors cause the gender earnings gap:

    (1) women have less human capital than men, i.e. education and experience
    (2) there is a family earnings penalty, i.e. mothers earn less than non-mothers.

    That's not discrimination; that's biology.

    I was born into a country with 2.5 percent pay gap and now I live in a country with 12% higher pay gap. Obviously my biological composition changed somehow.

    Anyway there are various reasons for pay gap but biological they are not. And frankly you do wonder for people's capacity to reason when they claim that.

    Its my opinion that the vast majority of the pay difference is accounted for by women not being strong enough at negotiating their salaries.

    I had a think about the last few jobs/promotions ive had and ive negotiated the salary in every case and by up to 15% in one instance.

    My wife recently got offered a new job and i had to force her to negotiate and she got an extra 8%. She had never negotiated a salary in any job before.

    She isn't.

    She's the highest paid woman on television.

    Jim Parsons is the highest paid actor on TV per episode. Pulling in, as best as I can find, double what Vergara does at $1m per episode.

    It's a report EU do. I suggest you write to Juncker & Co. and tell them to stop publishing nonsense. Anyway it's a worldwide research conspiracy against men.

    Just wanted to say kudos to the BBT cast though; they all took a pay cut so Mayim Bialik and Melissa Rauch could get more pay parity.

    It seems like a false dichotomy. It's always presented in such a way that working shorter hours and spending time with your own flesh and blood is some sort of punishment while spending 50 hours a week in an office is living the life of Reilly.

    It's not as though fathers are spending all their untold wealth on Ferraris and helicopters; they're spending it on rent, food and clothes for their families whom they barely get to see a lot of the time. Such men would be over the moon if their wives earned a bit more money.

    It's bull**** distraction tactics pushed through the media to feed the hoi polloi's insecurities and have them turn on one another. Nothing new in that.

    The problem of equal access to opportunity for single employees is a different story altogether and needs to be sorted out fairly lively.

    Deservedly so. They are as much a part of the main cast as any of them at this stage.

    Mayim is a neuroscientist too as far as I know.

    Let's also not forget about negotiation skills, I know a number of men, including myself who have threatened to quit if they don't get a payrise. Do women threaten to quit as often as men?

    It's not simply equal pay for equal work, the better negotiator you are the more money you get.

    Obviously, baldly shouting sexism is inaccurate because if it were just that, surely women wouldn't progress in the workplace at all. Our company has a number of female directors for example. My overall manager is a woman as well.

    That said, it's wrong to simply point out the bald fact that many women's careers do stall or end because of children. It's hardly their fault that they're the gender that bears children and that parental leave often isn't equally available.

    That said, it's wrong to simply point out the bald fact that many women's careers do stall or end because of children. It's hardly their fault that they're the gender that bears children and that parental leave often isn't equally available.

    Tell that to the women who decide not to have children (or can't have children) and focus on their careers instead...

    That's what you write to distinguish between a lot but not all of the subjects at hand.

    That's without even considering the time taken away from work for meetings, emergencies, and other activities related to her children, that requires her to miss a day or portions of the day. Childless people in the same department won't have those distractions or excuses to miss work, and therefore should be paid in a respectable manner.


    But why is it those things are down to the mothers to do? You say childless people in the same department but what you mean is childless people and fathers. Children have 2 parents in the workplace - why aren't fathers missing just as much work for these things?

    One of the reasons I am thinking about not having children is because of this. It is my career that will be inevitably affected and not my partners. We need to start not only allowing couples to divide maternity leave however they see fit but also actively encouraging fathers to use this. It is easier for women to ask for a shortened week to spend more time with their family - its normal for women to ask for this but strange if a man was to.

    It's personal choice between Mothers and Fathers who is the main child carer if any.
